Extract of sample "The FedEx Leadership"

Smith believed that leadership is all about growth. Subsequently, this concept saw FedEx express adopting a people service profit philosophy.

These define and explain what unique services each company offers. This differentiation illustrates the leadership styles exercised in the company. To its customers, the FedEx brand represents a company that consistently and absolutely lives up to its goals, objectives and commitments. The primary aim of the company is to offer a world-class client experience. This service increases customer loyalty hence minimizing the chances of them trying a new or different company. A world-class customer experience occurs when dedicated caring employees at the behest of managers deliver quality and exceptional customer services.

To achieve these successes, the FedEx leadership has had to focus on specific areas while at the same time implementing sound policies. FedEx acknowledges that the people side of leadership is growing more complex with time. As such, the company is always committed to nurturing leadership capabilities in its managers so as to be able to manage and control the ever-transforming workforce. Thus, the firm aims at nurturing leaders to be able to make quick, accurate decisions while exercising influence over their employees.

The essence of leadership in any organization is to advance company growth via the implementation of good favorable policies (Birla 2005). These policies are often based on cost reduction and providence of quality services. Also, employees must be included in making these decisions. FedEx for instance has taken various measures to reduce the company’s expenses. First, they have retired expensive maintenance aircraft for new cheaper to maintain aircraft. This strategy saw a 20-30% reduction in operating costs. Consequently, a reduction in operating costs saw an increase in company profits.

This presentation made me realize that leadership is an integral factor that determines the success of a company. All the leadership decisions have an impact on company performance. To be successful, leaders have to link to what most matters to the company. At FedEx, discretionary effort and leadership requirements create a company’s internal case of emotional intelligence. The emotional intelligence learnable skills are major building blocks towards the creation of a people-first style of leadership. This in turn leads to an increase in a company’s economic value. Next, company leadership has to build its internal capacity. No company can succeed without employee participation.

Engaged employees will further the organizational strategy by interacting with their customers professionally. This will in turn determine the efficiency of the company. The primary assumption of this strategy is that employees have the ability to create or increase competitive advantage if they are involved in the running of the organization. To do this, the organization has to first take care of its people. At FedEx, employees are valuable assets. Lastly, leaders should walk the talk. Managers and leaders should ensure the policies and decisions made are implemented correctly.
