Proper prevention and control of infection are essential in ensuring that effective safe care is available to the people who use social and health care services. The application of effective infection control and prevention should be consistent as well as made an everyday practice (DH, 2010, p. 5). The NICE quality standards are some of the key drivers to organizations dealing with health and social care being, hence legally required to implement the 2008 Health and Social Care Act as well as meeting the Act’s Code of practice standards.
The NICE quality standard is responsible for covering the infection prevention and control for all people who receive healthcare regardless of the setting (setting can be primary, community or secondary). These settings include health centers, hospitals, dental clinics, people's own homes, healthcare provided in prisons and schools, care homes, mental health and ambulance services (NICE, 2014). Therefore, this study by conducting intensive systematic review seeks to ascertain ways of reducing spreading of HAIs in hospital settings; this is by use of proper urinary catheter care, enteral feeding and hand and skin decontamination.
The infection control and prevention is through the “Essential steps” to healthcare that is clean and safe. This is a review tool and framework developed by NICE for reducing infections in healthcare. This is the key question around which the entire research revolves. The motivation behind this research originates from witnessing the healthcare infections firsthand in the hospital setting where the researcher has worked for six years.
