The Health Risks of Genetically Modified Foods Introduction Genetically modified foods are prepared from genetic engineering. In this process different changes take place in DNA of food products. Genetically modified foods have created huge controversy in the world. In the preparation of this kind of foods latest molecular techniques of biology are being used. These are all modified food products. In this kind of products all different nutritional contents are introduced artificially. In the year 1994 commercial uses of genetically modified foods began. Different traits are artificially included in this kind of food. It is very modern concept. As this food products are artificial in nature so there are lot of health risks with this kind of foods. This essay will discuss different health risks of genetically modified foods. Discussion According to the study of American Academy of Environmental Medicine different animals indicated serious health problems related with Genetically Modified food products. Problems are very serious like immunity problems, infertility, insulin regulation problem, quick ageing before time and different problems related to gastrointestinal system. It very clearly states that there is very close relationship between genetically modified foods and health risks. Genetically modified foods are a great risk for children and pregnant woman. In different experiments where genetically modified foods are being used shows that pregnant woman and children are very adversely affected. All this experiments were done on cat and cow. It shows that death rate of cats are increasing by the usage of genetically modified Soy. It further identifies that all female cats were facing pregnancy problems. Genetically modified foods pose lot of threats for reproductive system of woman. It created lots of reproductive complications like pre mature delivery, infertility, abortions and uteruses. This experiment was done on buffalos in Haryana, India. The food is very toxic in nature. It can result in allergy or flu. BT toxic sprays are used in this type of foods. This type of toxic spray remains after those platens are washed off. American Academy of Environmental Medicine also tells that this kind of foods cause for significant irregularities in immunity system of animals. Cytokines are present heavily in this type of foods. It increases the possibilities of allergy, inflammation and asthma. Genetically modified foods change immune systems. It is a great health risk. Genetically modified corns and soy are having allergic properties in them. Genetically modified soy is having very high content of trypsin. When the genetically modified soy was launched in United Kingdom allergy from soy was very common disease. People of USA also undergone a huge asthmas nod allergy problems caused by genetically modified foods (Kreipe, 87-91). Genetically modified foods are reasons for death of animals. One study shows that in a village in Andhra Pradesh, India buffalo gazed on land full of normal cottons and did not registered a single health problem. But as those buffalos were grazed on Bt cotton plant those buffalos were sick and died after three days. In the post mortems of those buffalo it was clear that there were some black spots and signs of irritations in liver and intestines. Bt toxin was the reason behind the death of those buffalos. It clearly shows that genetically modified foods are very risky for health. It is so toxic in nature that it can be a reason of death. Different studies have shown that genetically modified tomato can results in bleeding from stomach. It also shows that poisons were found in the major organs of rats when they were given Bt corn to eat. One study of human feeding tells that the food is having a very dangerous unavoidable aspect. It tells that different genes which are inserted artificially in the genetically modified foods transferred into human intestines. It intrudes through the DNA of those bacteria’s which are present in human intestines. It means the effect of those genes remains within the body of human being even after they stop eating genetically modified foods (Freedman, 56-62). It is a very serious matter for every human being. It means it is very difficult to get freedom from the effects of genetically modified foods. People may find different health problems after long time also. Different gastrointestinal problems are very common with this kind of foods. It is very risky that genetically modified genes remain operational inside human being. In 1980’s almost 100 American were killed for taking contaminated supplement. Name of that contaminated supplement is L-tryptophan. Almost 5000 to 10000 Americans fell sick and disabled. Research revealed that the supplement was genetically modified. The epidemic was unique, complex, having very fast reaction and acute in nature. It resulted in removal of genetically modified supplements. It is very difficult to trace the source of disease from this type of food products. Once the disease has been traced still it is very difficult to tame that disease also (Nottingham, 90-98). Genetically modified foods are causing diabetes, autism, allergies, obesity, asthma, heart disease, cancer and reproductive problems. It is very important for all human being for not to wait for any doctor decision or research report. They can safely stay away from this kind of foods. European countries have removed all genetically modified products. This kind of food products may silence genes can change expression levels. It can affect the metabolism system very adversely. Different studies have shown that insertion of artificial genes in to food items increases level of anti nutrients. These kind of anti nutrients are very harmful for human health. It cannot be neutralised easily. One greater problem related with genetically modified foods are it uses lots of pesticides for these crops. When human being or any animal eats genetically modified foods all those pesticides affects very badly. American Academy of Environmental Medicine doctors have identified genetically modified diet as unhealthy. They always prescribe non-genetically modified foods. It is very clear that after the usage of genetically modified foods number of diseases increased in America. Contamination level of genetically modified foods is very high and is having long term effects in human gene (McHughen, 123-126). Genetically modified foods are having serious side effects. In this process unrelated genes are being injected in to food products. It causes lots of side effects like allergy, deficiency in nutrition and increase toxin like carcinogen. Different independent researches which are clearly stating against this kind of products are getting suppressed. Researchers are being fired for conducting this kind of research. It increases the risk. There are not enough voices against these products. Company like Monsanto are trying to do profit out of this business neglecting important aspects of animal and human health (Smith, 81-84). Genetically modified food products are risky from every aspect. It doesn’t have any other benefits apart from business profitability. Genetically modified food products are very dangerous for every age group people. Conclusion Genetically modified foods are totally artificial in nature. All different traits are injected artificially with the help of engineering achieved genetically. It is very risky for human and animal health. This essay clearly shows that thesis kinds of foods are having lots of negative aspects. Genetically modified foods are very dangerous for pregnant females. Normal food products are best. Genetically modified products are counterproductive for human and animal health. It destabilise environmental balances. In the above essay it is very clear that there is not a single positive aspect of genetically modified products. It is only harmful for animals and human being.
