From a food chain perspective, it should be noted that every single GM food in the food chain will eventually reach the consumer. Advocates for GM food argue that they will enhance global food security, but this should be taken with caution since a food regulating and testing body should be established first before approving GM foods.
Food allergies are a primary concern when it comes to GM food since 6% of children and 2% of children suffer from severe food allergies. GM foods can instigate a more severe allergy since they are reared to resist some conditions (Dona 164-175). Environmental risk is another factor that makes GM foods unacceptable for human consumption. These foods mean that foreign genes will be introduced into the wild population. It will, therefore, require those handling such foods to be adequately trained to avoid contaminating natural foods. Other environmental factors include reduction of plant’s spectrum, though GM foods have not been in the ecosystem for long. It can, therefore, be stated with utmost conviction that lack of evidence GM foods safety is not proof that they are safe. ...Download file to see next pagesRead More

Using this information, we can then make an educated decision as to whether the sale and use of such products would be to our gain or to our detriment. Background First, it is vital that we understand what the words “genetically modified food” actually mean to the general public and to the scientific community. “Genetically modified”, or GM, food, is a food crop that has had its genetic code, as designated by the DNA of the plant, altered in some way that makes it different from the original food crop (Forman, 2009). The other commonly heard...

...production (Costa-font, Joan, Mossialos, Elias and Rudisill, Caroline 225).. GMO food production has identified seven main areas which concern the human safety test in the consumption of the foods and include the study of the DNA and the nutritional contents which are introduced in the new food product and the analysis of the chemical composition of the plant parts as well as the allergens. The human safety test also includes the estimate of the toxicological or nutritional problems which may be encountered by the consumer and the risk of transferring microorganisms in the gene transfer process (Weise, 44). The use of genetically modified (GM) ingredients in...

The project deals with the different aspects of genetically modified food, its benefits and impacts all over the world. Also known as biotech food, genetically modified foods are derived from genetically modified animals and plants. The money saved by cultivating cambogia or the profit obtained from the productivity will help the farmer get additional fund not only to increase his own standard of living but also help develop his farm by purchasing new and better equipments and add more farm animals etc. Therefore evidences support the contention that the adoption of GM crops leads on average to a higher economic performance, i.e., benefits, for farmers than conventional (non-GM) crops (Finger et al, 2011). .... With the criticisms against GM foods proven to be mere fears, GM foods should be adopted globally as an effective strategy to enhance food security. Benefits of GM Foods Of prime importance to the world is the fact that GM foods increase food supply. Genetic modification leads to development of seeds that produce high yields. Freedman gives evidence to this noting that through genetic modification, humans have been able to increase the yield of cotton, soy and corn by a range of between 20% and 30% (86). Furthermore, a majority of GM...

This article argues against the safety of GM foods for human consumption, further casting doubt on the competence of the current safety assessments to identify such dangers and protect humans. It cites headaches, skin rashes, allergies and eczema as some of the side effects, supported by findings on mice. It also argues for allergic and immune responses with unpredicted responses and reproductive problems as other negative effects of GM foods.
