School Gardens: A potential Scope on Health , Enviroments and Food Education - Thesis Example

It is a fact that a number of issues regarding health and nutrition in the US and Europe have come to pass and will continue to do so, if not pondered upon. Thus, we can take the example of the declarations which have been put forth by the UN. Moore & Pubant (2008: pp.10) state that the article 21 of the UNCED verifies clearly how it is the responsibility of every individual of the society, including children, to be an active participant for sustaining development. Thus, the uprising of movements like the Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) across the major areas of Europe, United States and other parts of the world, have advanced the thought of education and environmentalism being the key factor for the development of any society.

Hunter and Smith believe that the methods of the survival of human beings are determined by our environment (2005: pp.2). Therefore, in the sector of health and nutrition, the role which the development of environment and its understanding among the human beings plays is extremely vital. To understand the relation between education and the environment, the steps taken by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and their strategies are obvious. Besides that the MAB National Committee of Germany has verified that an environmentally educated society results in a healthy population and a healthy population advances the environment in a better manner (2005: pp.98). In my perspective, garden based learning in school has a significant role in ESD along with the various other elements that support this development.

It can be defined as the incorporated education, in and across disciplines, through vigorous, appealing real-world. The research provided that the scope of school gardens is one essentially important part. If it is enhanced in the lives of the students, will put forth and advance an opportunity that will help in changing the lives of the students concerning their knowledge of the environment, nutrition and food. This paper presents a methodology where the students are successfully provided a learning environment in which they are provided a chance to experience realistic and experimental learning.

Through this methodology, they are provided a chance to gain insights by being involved in the procedure of understanding their environment in a better manner. This thesis presents the idea of teaching environmental education using cross-disciplinary approach and simultaneously teaching hard-core subjects such as Mathematics, Science and Geography, which appear to be very challenging but through ways, which prove this path as easy as it can be. It is a fact that throughout the US and the Europe the educational sector is recognizing the usefulness of the educational a garden.

The students will thus be provided a perfect opportunity to comprehend various plants, insects, weather, and many other science-related lessons. The Mother Nature serves the school gardens as a canvas for art and creativity of students themselves. The appropriate subjects and potentials of the school gardens cannot be counted. The students shall be given a chance to make the school gardens an essential part of their classrooms.
