of the English of the Teacher 4 September What is engineering? It is really possible to say that most of the sciences and disciplines are understood in terms of what they do. For instance, in case of ‘medicine’ it is easy to understand that it is a science that has to do with curing people of diseases and ailments. Similarly in the case of ‘teaching’ it is but feasible to say that it is a discipline that is concerned with imparting education to people. However, I believe, it is very difficult to actually summarize the range of activities covered by the science or discipline of engineering. In the current times, engineering is a branch of science that has a say in almost every aspect of the modern life. In that context, the scope of engineering is very expansive and ubiquitous.
If one tries to grasp the attributes of engineering in a very simple and concise manner, it is a science that has to do with making things happen. If I take a casual look at most of the machines and products that I use are it the kitchen stove, elevator, water heater, computers, smart phones or automobiles, these are the gadgets that do certain specific things. These are the products or machines that solve many human problems, and these machines or gadgets have been made possible by the science or discipline of engineering. Hence, I strongly believe that engineering is a science that helps humanity solve or deal with the difficult tasks and problems it faces in the everyday life. Engineering does so by using the available scientific knowledge to contrive technologies, which help in the invention and production of varied innovative products and gadgets. These gadgets or machines may vary from being simple bicycles to space ships and rockets. In that sense I simply cannot help marvelling at the versatility of the science of engineering.
The amazing thing is that engineering is a discipline which I believe has revolutionized every aspect of the modern life. I cannot find any aspect of the contemporary life that has not been influenced by engineering. For instance computer engineers have to do with the designing and fabrication of the computer hardware and software, which could be used to solve many complex issues and tasks. Automobile engineers design and make varied cars and automobiles that are intended to fulfil specific aims and objectives like assuring minimal fuel consumption or having the ability to run on alternative fuels. When I look at such astounding technologies, I cannot help believing that many of the comforts and wonders of the modern life would never have been possible, but for the science of engineering. I believe that engineering is a multifaceted discipline that is destined to shape the future of the entire humanity.
Simply speaking engineering is a branch of science that has to do with solving problems. I think it is a science that looks into whether it is possible to assemble together varied crazy ideas and technologies to make life simple, more productive, well informed and efficient. Read More

Seismic engineering

...? Seismic engineering: Causes of earthquakes in relation to geology 28-3 Being the main reason for the cause of earthquakes, the geological setting and plate tectonics are a key to understanding the mechanism of earthquakes. Seismic engineering as a subject has long been motivated by the need to detect explosions such as nuclear testing as well as to develop earthquake early notification systems. This has enabled the science to develop into the modern age on par with other sciences. The basic reason behind the occurrence of earthquakes is the push and pulls forces inside the earth’s mantle. The forces are high enough to swivel and twine the tectonic plates on the top causing earthquakes (Walker, 2007)....

... power; however, the creation of the same drastically altered the geography of the land including significant changes and alterations to the biodiversity of the neighbouring areas. The Kariba Lake was located in the tropics and was one of the first projects to be built in the region. It was created by damming of the Zambezi River which flowed between the two countries i.e. Zambia and Zimbabwe in the year 1959. The building of this lake was referred to as an audacious engineering feat since it was created by clearing up a large proportion of the lands leading to displacement of thousands of locals (Gray, 2000:69). Major problems encountered The construction of the Kariba dam brought about significant changes in the area, especially... ...

...How to Improve the Status of an Engineer in Society By Devangini Chauhan Engineering is the application of scientific and technical knowledge to solve human problems where Engineers use their imagination, judgment and reasoning to apply science, technology, mathematics, and practical experience. The design, production, and operation of useful objects or processes are the final outcomes of this process. Apart from being a subject that ranges from large collaborations to small individual projects, almost all engineering projects are beholden to some sort of financing agency: a company, a set of investors, or a government. This finds outcome in the fact that large-scale...

...relative to automobile development. Germany became the source of automobile technology back in the 1870s when the first four-stroke internal combustion engine was created by Nicolaus Otto (Cross & Szostak, 2004). What followed were progressive improvements to this engine and automobiles in general. The process finally ushered in the electric ignition that saw the emergence of a revolutionized transport sector. Automobiles for private and public use emerged, allowing people to move from one place to another with ease. Automobile development changed the social face of the world. What essentially began as a simple invention in Germany quickly spread all over the world, changing the manner in which transport...

.... The solutions for device scaling involve development of conventional MOSFETs on substrate of silicon-on-insulator. The insulator creation involves oxygen ion implantation and layer annealing for oxide formation. Ultrathin SOI MOSFET is involved in the efficient reduction of SCE (Short Channel Effect) and leakage paths elimination thus good for device scaling. Faster movement of carriers enhances the performance of device and can be done through strain engineering and orientation effects. Finally, there is the target of production of sub-10-nm gate-length MOSFETs of 5 A oxide thickness and junction length under 10nm by 2016 (Ieong et al 2004). Pan, D. Z., Yang, J.
