In this essay, the researcher shall portray the reasons as to why individuals would be for or against same-sex marriages before he gives a brief statement on what the society should opt for. Many arguments have been shot to support same-sex marriages that include homosexuals and lesbianism. Arguments have hit debates that since there is no evidence that same-sex parents are not poorer than heterosexual parents and that different individuals make more stable couples and that they do not have any impact on parenting abilities, they, therefore, are relatively better than heterosexual couples. Others have argued that same-sex marriages are unrelated to polygamous relationships which make it considerably a better way to escape cheating and unfaithful couples in marriage. Opponents to same-sex marriages have stated that marriage is traditionally meant to be a union of one man and one woman, homosexual and lesbianism unions can be classed with polygamy as it goes against the definition. Religious opponents have stipulated that God created the marriage institution for the purpose of procreation. Same-sex married couples cannot reproduce. This argument is based on the concept that God exists. However, giving this a second thought the ability of same-sex couples to reproduce is not entirely a problem because we have encountered heterosexual couples that are not able to reproduce and are comfortable with it. The society should, therefore, provide gay couples with similar legal and social identities allow them to access the advice of law and equal judgments upon it so as to avoid infringing upon rights of others. Gay marriages should be allowed to enjoy the same privileges’ enjoyed by the majority because only minorities differ from the rest due to the fact that these individuals are computed in terms of feelings and relationship.

Gay rights advocates believe that it is inequitable and biased to refuse to give certain privileges to any couple, gay or not. For example, marriage enables spouses to receive insurance through their partners’ employers. They are also allowed many other rights such as the ability to make decisions for their partner who is being hospitalized, have the right to sue on their partner’s behalf and cannot be forced to testify against them in court.
The idea of same sex marriage affects wide areas such as domestic affairs, employee benefits, and government allowance and inheritance rights. Lately, the argument of same sex marriage has grown up to a global issue which does not have an amicable solution.
Specifically in the United States, homosexuality was seen by many as taboo as recently as the 1970s. Homosexuality was even seen as dangerous, especially with the rise of the AIDS epidemic in the 1990s. In more contemporary times, homosexuality is becoming more widely accepted.
The religious arguments, social arguments which relate to the questions about children and family, arguments with reference to divorce rates and reproduction, arguments based on tradition and conventions, arguments about equality, health etc along with economic considerations contribute the various aspects of the controversy.
Marriages are made in Heaven, they say. Rightly so, but the marriages between man and woman. No religion in the world supports marriage within the same sex. Same sex marriages or gay marriages became a topic of controversy in the late 1990s or early 2000s. History does show a record of same sex desire or unions between men, usually of varying ages.
The conclusion from this study states that same-sex marriage should not be allowed for reasons that it violates the ultimate purpose of traditional heterosexual marriage to procreate. Studies have likewise indicated that same-sex unions potentially increase divorce rates; further exacerbating the current status of matrimony in the United States.
