Career Progress: I was born on March 9th, 1979. I am currently working as a translator for a public pension agency. I have been engaged in this field for the past 10 years. Public pension agency is one of the largest investment arms in the Middle East. I translate all papers related to Mega Projects that PPA invests in. This led me to the realization that this is more of a translation business. In what role do you see yourself working in immediately after graduation and what is your longer term career vision? I plan to pursue my MBA from London Business School. After completing graduation, I plan on changing the old fashioned ways of the Saudi Women. My aim is to be a business woman and not be just a translator. Even though I am working as a translator, I have also started my small business now. I plan on leaving my translation career and working on my business aspirations after getting my MBA degree. How will your past and present experiences help you to achieve this? I am good at team work, negotiations and can work under pressure. I have already worked as a translator. Working as a translator, gave me exposure to work life and helped me learn a lot of things. I learnt to be more: Responsible: In translation work, deadlines are hectic and work load intense. One has to learn to take charge of their own work, be responsible for it and submit it on time. I learnt the art of taking responsibility and being accountable for it through my career as a translator. This will help me in my business aspirations too. It will ensure that I set my goals in advance, and work towards them responsibly and diligently. Responsibility will not only mean being responsible for work allocated to me; but it will also mean being responsible for my sub-ordinates and ensuring that their needs and limitations are kept in perspective when I am making decisions. Team work: I have learnt the art of team work and am quite a pro at it. For the success of any entrepreneurial venture, team work is very important. It brings forward a wider and longer pool of ideas; there is more synergy and work is done more effectively. I think my stint as a translator will help me in dealing with my sub-ordinates as team members, forming teams within them and explaining them what team work is like in the process. Leadership: I have led numerous teams during my academic and professional career. Good Leadership skills are the essence of any successful business vision. Unless the leadership at the helm of affairs is not strong, a business project cannot be translated into a successful one. I am quite a pro at leadership and think that I will be able to lead my team from the front. I will not just guide them but be there for them when they need me and ensure that they are well taken care of at all times. How will the London Business School MBA Program contribute to this goal? London Business School MBA program is one of the most renowned and well known MBA programs. It will be a matter of huge honor and privilege to me to be associated with this program. This business program will provide me with theoretical and practical knowledge to pursue my business endeavors. I will be exposed to a huge array of management related, economics related, communications related, and marketing related courses. Each of these courses will give me more ground and exposure to business related knowledge. I will be henceforth at bigger liberty to apply these concepts practically. Why is this the right time for you to pursue an MBA? I think this is the right time for me to do my MBA because I have come to a point in my life where I feel stagnated of everything. I am tired of my translating related job and want to move forward in life. I have been exposed to work life and have already pursued my bachelors. My future goal is to run my own business. MBA at this point in my life will only be the stepping stone for what I want to accomplish in my life. It will help instill me the necessary business related knowledge to pursue my business later on in life. Give a specific example of when you have had to test your leadership and team working skills. Given this experience what role will you play in a first year study group? I have been subjected to in-numerable number of occasions where I would be asked to test my leadership and team working skills. During my stint as an office bearer of my college’s Media and Publication society, I was made the Organizing Committee President for marc- a 5 day conference. Organization of the conference, all the way from its logistics to scheduling and arranging for sponsors was bestowed on me. It was a huge learning experience for me. I learnt how to delegate tasks during my tenure as the OCP. The entire society was divided into 5 distinct teams and each team was delegated one portfolio to take care of. I oversaw the proceedings of these groups while leading from the front. I also went and arranged sponsors for the conference. Interacting with corporate executives helped instill confidence in me and improved my interpersonal communication skills. I was not only successful in arranging sponsors but was also able to sustain relations for future too. In a first year study group, I expect to play the role of a team leader. Given my background as a team leader and experience, in the past, I think I will be able to succeed in this venture. I will not lead by dictating but by guiding from the front. In case of conflicts, within the group, I will play the role of negotiator and try to bring forward a solution that will satisfy all stake holders involved with the task. I will ensure that deadlines are met and the quality of work produced is retained at the same time. I am expecting it to be a fruitful, constructing and a worthwhile experience. Student involvement is an extremely important part of the London Business School MBA experience and this is reflected in the character of students on campus. Please describe how you will contribute to student clubs and the community and why? I understand that student involvement is an integral part of any Business program and I am completely charged up to contribute towards student clubs and community. I plan to do it via active participation. I will enroll myself in various clubs as soon as I join London Business School. Some of the few clubs that I am really looking forward to are: 1. Entrepreneurship club 2. Marketing Club 3. Community Service Club 4. Leadership Club I plan to take part in various activities associated with each of the aforementioned clubs. I will take my skills and past experience to these clubs and contribute towards the activities associated with these clubs. At the same time, I also plan on hosting some activities as a member of this club. For instance, for community service club, I plan on arranging an on-campus bake sale for charity. I will present my proposal to the club, once I have enrolled myself for it. Marketing has always been my passion and hence my eagerness to join this club. I will propose to host seminars and invite various guest speakers from different industries for the club. I also plan on to conduct various marketing related activities on campus-adware campaigns etc. This will not just increase brand value of London Business School’s Marketing program but will also induce active student involvement in marketing related activities. They will hence be able to apply their theoretical knowledge practically. Their concepts will become better and they will be more enthusiastically engaged and involved with their respective majors. London Business School offers a truly global and diverse experience. Describe any significant experiences outside of your home country or culture. What did you gain and how will your experience contribute to London Business School? I have travelled to many countries round the globe. These Include UK, Australia, France, China, Thailand, Egypt, Jordan, UAE and Bahrain. I got a chance to interact with not just the Saudis but other exchange participants from all around the world. I learnt how to project my country, how to deal with culture shock and how to adapt myself to different surroundings in the process. The intern apartment I was living at had interns from Romania, Brazil and Russia. I was the only Middle Eastern there, hence their life style and my life style was very different. Their meals, clothing, and cultural values differed from my values. However, we ensured that we adapted ourselves to each other’s life styles and accepted each other for what they were. We adjusted and became friends. Today, I am still in touch with them and cherish the time I spent with them. Thus, what started off as a journey full of apprehensions and challenges, turned out to be one of the most memorable experiences of my life. I have also taken training courses. I took one training course in Australia and I took the other two in UK. I am hence well versed and am aware of the British lifestyle and have dealt with culture shock already. I have travelled 3 times a year outside my country. There are different multi-national groups that I host inside my department. What is your most substantial achievement to date and why? I have always been driven by hard-work, perseverance and the urge to explore my potential in different areas. I was blessed with the opportunity to study in the leading educational institutes in my country. I think my most substantial achievement has been my straight as in my Olives. It was the official exam that I sat for and fared well with flying colors in that exam. That was my first and biggest achievement. I had worked really hard for it and it felt something else together when the hard work paid off. It holds special place in my life and in my achieved because it was the first of its kind. My family was ecstatic and I was showered with praises, gifts and accolades from everywhere. It was another high of its own right and easily one of the most memorable experiences of my life. Is there any other information that you believe would help the MBA Admissions Committee when considering your application? I hope to gain knowledge of British life style, their working style and their business culture through this program. This MBA program will help me give insight into the management and entrepreneurial ways of the British life. Marketing and business related subjects have always held my interest. Studying marketing in London would help me give insight into the marketing and management practices in Britain. I hope to adapt whatever I learn from there to my entrepreneurial endeavors in future. In the next 5 years, I plan to sustain myself as an entrepreneur completely. I have already laid down the foundations of my business... It will also help me become well versed with the customer market in British. I will, hence, be able to, customize my business according to the needs and requirements for people over there as well. In a gist, I aspire to gain both theoretical as well as practical knowledge about the British lifestyle, culture , market and management practices to be able to apply them when I come back home. I also plan to pursue my post doctorate studies in UK. This program will give me exposure to the academic life style in Britain. The knowledge and experience gained through this program will help me in making my decision regarding the marketing program that I should apply for in UK. It will also aid me in getting acquainted to the British style of education and living. Ergo, I will have a better idea of what to expect and how to adjust myself when I begin my post graduate program in Britain, later in life. Bibliography Holland, Kelly.
