Firstly, and perhaps most importantly, to complete this course you need to set real and measurable goals for yourself. At the beginning of the class, the professor will assign you to craft a study plan. This study plan is extremely useful to set yourself on the right path; therefore, stick to the weekly calendar and do all you can to ensure that you have wisely budgeted your time. As a non-native speaker, my goal was to try my best to learn business writing skills and improve my interpersonal communication techniques. Another key element of the course is that during the coming semester you will regularly be assigned to finish your homework every week. The homework is posted on I learned. As such, you will need to read the prompts and carefully analyze and craft your homework so that late submission is not even a temptation or possibility.

To prepare for the mechanics midterm, practice is the most important exercise you can engage in. As a foreign student, I was worried about this test; because I found myself quite weak in grammar and punctuation. When I asked some of my friends for tips, they all recommended that I practice as much as possible. Before the midterm, I reviewed the “Sentences Focus Help” and the “Commas and Coordinating Conjunctions”. After that, I searched for some similar questions to practice. When I constantly practiced, I found that the more I practice, the more easily I could find out the obvious mistakes that were present in my sentences. The most difficult part for me was the use of commas.

Much of the information is technical and, to be honest, quite boring; but there is no shortcut. If you do not spend the time to master these elements as the semester progresses, you will find yourself placed further and further behind; with little to no time to study the additional information that will be expected of you.

If you feel overwhelmed, another impact part of the advice is that you should not under any circumstance skip the class. As it’s only 3 hours every week, the professor uses this time to discuss important information and provide some useful tips at the end of class. If you still have questions, you are sometimes better off asking tutors for help than the professor. I have some friends that have taken the BUS 300, and we all agreed that one of the most effective ways to resolve lingering questions was simply to approach a tutor before or after the class.

The most interesting part is the business proposal; you will ultimately have 3 topics to choose from. My advice would be to pick the one you are interested in the most and work hard towards a finished product. Trust me, you will learn a lot from the business report. After spring break, our class started to work on the proposal. Accordingly, each week we were assigned to write a part of the report. Don’t be upset if you have a bad grade after the professor graded your first submission. You have a chance here to revise and the professor will leave useful feedback on what I learned. Please follow the comments to redo your work and you could drastically improve your grade. For example, I did very poorly in my first submission, so I rewrote my approach following the feedback I had received; as such, the revision was much better than the first one and it gave me great encouragement. Also, checking your grammar and proofreading your work will make a huge difference.

When working on your proposal you should first carefully read the prompts and make sure you understand the instructions before starting to write. Second, always ask yourself if the sources you are using are the right ones and whether or not there is any alternative way to view the issues at hand. Lastly, check the grammar and proofread your work carefully. Although some of my work got a high grade, I oftentimes needed to improve my grammar and proofreading; so there was still a lot of work.

From the writing portion of this course, I think I have learned a lot. But for the oral part, I am still struggling; this may be one of the reasons why my personality is fearful of public speaking or lacking confidence. When I was presenting the Two-Minute Sales Pitch, I had practiced a lot at home; but when I was standing in front of the other classmates, I felt nervous, and I forgot most of the contents I wanted to talk about. For my oral communication part, I needed to practice, improve my self-confidence, and enunciate my thoughts. In the future I should present to my friends or classmates before the presentation; not only practice at home.

The reason behind this is that I do not receive any comments from myself. Yet, if I have presented to my friends, I probably gain some feedback from them and I will know what are my shortcomings, how to clearly state my thoughts, and what should be improved. Next time, I will not wait for the professor to call my name to present, I want to be the first one; because I feel very nervous when I am waiting for this call out. And the most important thing I need to retrieve is my self-confidence.  Read More
