I am Woman Synthesis

"Medea" by Euripides, "A Doll's House" by Henrik Ibsen, "Raise the Red Lantern" by Zhang Yimou, and "Size 6 The Western Women's Harem" by Fatema Mernissi-the three works of fiction and the article by Mernissi, have been lauded for their portrayal of the agonies of women, though in different contexts and cultures. All the three female protagonists in the first three stories have made unbelievably brave sacrifices to win the affection of the men whom they loved. In the fourth, Fatema Merinssi is narrating her views on how Western women are tailor made to suite the beauty fancies of men by the fashion industry and how that result in physical and mental problems for women (Mernissi). But all these four stories convey one single point...

Who am I and why am I

My own race had been branded with many stereotypes that I find rather true. I am a Chinese Indonesian and I was brought up in Indonesia for a decade before moving to Singapore for my studies, and then to the United States. In the United States, people do not see me very much as an Indonesian. Partly, because I do not have dark skin and I am not a Muslim. People see me as a Chinese, from mainland, China. Evidently, I suffer from a mix of many cultures and traditions that is rather hard to keep up at times. However, I tried my best to stick to my roots and believe in what my original culture believes, thus answering “who am I”- I am a Chinese Indonesian. There are various aspects to be considered a Chinese-Indonesian; we are a mixe...

I Think, Therefore I am

...In his famous Dis on Method the renowned philosopher Ren Descartes originally said in French: "Je pense, donc je suis". This later became popular in its Latin version as "Cogito ergo sum", or, "I Think, Therefore I am." The following quote from his work points out one of the main points he has to stress: "after considering everything very thoroughly, I must finally conclude that the proposition, I am, I exist, is necessarily true whenever it is put forward by me or conceived in my mind." (AT VII 25; CSM II 16-17) This clearly means that Descartes believed that if and when he was thinking of his existence, and could conceive of it, he indeed actually existed. Here, he claims his own existence from a first-person point of view, and does...

New York

One of the key points in Tim Cresswell’s article “Defining Places” (2004) is the idea that the term ‘place’ doesn’t simply refer to a specific location but is instead used to refer to a variety of ideas and concepts that are tied up in our conception of place. The author illustrates how space (a specific location) is different from a place (as an idea of a particular place with a specific character and socio-political concept) as he focuses in on New York’s Lower East Side, specifically into Tompkins Square Park and the various conceptions that have developed in association with this space. Illustrating how this area has a special meaning to people through various connections, the author outlines several key elements to the defi...

Why Am I Interested in Pharmacy

...My interest in pharmacy began when I was twelve years old, when I had to move in with my grandmother who lived in (write where she lived). She was quite sick and had to take a lot of medicine; as she had no formal education, I had to ensure that she was taking the correct drugs, in the correct dosage, daily. I did it for five years and this ignited the passion for pharmacy that I have today, and this is also why I pursued pharmacy related studies. It did get hard for me when I moved back with my parents to the United States; I had to get back into the routine of life here. Not only that, I suffered from ill health upon my return for quite a while. Both these factors took their toll on my studies; I did not do as well in my classes as I...

New york

... 26 September, New York It happens once in a blue moon that you have a big apple in your hand and another Big Apple under your feet. Yes, I was eating a big apple at my aunt’s in New York. It was a night that I had come to New York for. It was the first time that I had come to New York in my whole life. At 2:45 am, I went out on my own to explore the city. I had presumed it to be a cold, quiet street. In the chilling December midnight, I had taken a torch with me to guide me along the way. But, oh! whuzzaaaaaaaaaaaat! With my mouth wide open, the torch slipped off my hand. The city was all awake! There were beams of light everywhere. It was so loud out there. 3:00 am seemed like 3:00 pm. At one point, I was so startled that I had to rub my...

I AM

Hence, this paper will look at the seven “I Am” statements of Jesus, and will elaborate on the following points: (1) where do these statements occur; (2) the significance of these statements; (3) how do these statements fit into the Gospel of John; and (4) are there old testament contexts of them.
New International Version (John 6:35) states “Then Jesus declared, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” This particular statement reveals a significant contextual reference from the Old Testament. The Bible says, “Then the Lord says to Moses, ‘I will rain down bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. I...

The impact of Plant Disease on New Zealand

Transmission of PMTV occurs through inoculation of sap in 26 species belonging to Solanaceae or Chenopodiaceae and to Tetragonia expansa and also through grafting (A. Reavy., W. Kashiwazaki., & Barker,1995 ). In some cases, PMTV is known to be transmitted by mechanical inoculation also.

Since PMTV is vectored only through S.subterranea the infection of plants with PMTV depends on the life cycle of S.subterranea which takes about 10-14 days. The life cycle of S.subterranean takes place in 2 phases: Phase I) This is the primary stage of the life cycle initiated with the germination of resting spores known as sporangiosori or cystosori persisting in the soil as spore balls with thick cell walls into zoosporangia. These...

The United Kingdom and World War I

It had shown its ability to survive a war and remained a powerful nation of the world (Hardie, Graham, and Kofman).

After the end of the war, the European governments had to make rehabilitation efforts, in respect of the cities destroyed in the war. In addition, they had to provide medical facilities to the soldiers who had been wounded in the war. These governments had to pay pensions to the soldiers, widows, and relatives of the dead soldiers. Moreover, they had to repay the public and foreign debts, and the interest on such debts. These constituted the ad...

The Launch of Kones New Product

Political: 90% of Kone’s sales come from international markets. This makes it very vulnerable to political stability in its global markets for example Italy is one of the markets of Kone and elevator regulations are governed in Italy by parliament. Thus, to bring MonoSpace i.e. an elevator without a machine room in compliance with standards, it would require an act by the parliament.
Economical: The performance of the elevator industry is directly proportional to the performance of the construction industry. The construction industry has a maximum potential in developing countries rather than in developed countries. The reason for this is that the developed countries have maximized their growth potential whereas the dev...

The French New Wave

...: In an oft-quoted interview in Cahiers, Godard describes his works thus: “Today I still think myself as a critic and in a sense I am., more than ever before. Instead of writing criticism, I make film, but the critical dimension is subsumed. I think of myself as an essayist, producing essays in novel form or novels in essay form: only instead of writing, I film them.” (Cahiers du Cinema, December 1962) Goddard’s concept of cinema as an essay is reflected in this quote. He artistically expresses this concept through his first feature film, A bout de soufflé or Breathless which was released in 1960. This film becomes the beginning of the career of a modern film genius and also happens to be the manifesto of the new film movement...

Christian Dior: The Man Who Made The World Look New

However, Christian was interested only in the arts and mostly in fashion (YourNewFragrance, 2004). Even as a child he was interested in the life of the artisan community (Hirst, n.d.). Unknown to his parents, he would visit galleries and bars that were frequented by painters and writers such as Picasso and Cocteau. His parents did not allow him to pursue studies at the Academy of Fine Arts and he was forced to enroll at the Faculty of Political Science. He, nevertheless, secretly continued to visit the galleries. After four years at the Faculty of Political Science, it became clear that he would never obtain a degree from there and his mother too lost hopes of seeing him as a diplomat. In the meantime, Dior developed a wide circle...

Comparing the Brave New World and Todays World

... A Brave New World 26 February Introduction Man has always wondered since time immemorial about his ultimate place in the big universe. He had attempted to find meaning in this scheme of things without much success. A key repeated theme is seeming failure to find that true meaning that will justify his existence. What usually happens is that the more Man goes deeper into the search for ultimate meaning, the more he finds nothing. This is confounding, to say the least, and goes to show how useless the search could be. Many people had been doing this search several times and came up with nothing. Out of this seeming hopelessness and uselessness came the philosophical idea of the absurd – that Mans search for individual meaning is bound...

I Have Sinned by Bill Clinton

President Clinton addressed an audience comprising clergymen and ministers. The buildup to this event was much hyped as the earlier statement made by the President before the independent Ken Starr counsel on August 17, 1998, was charged with perjury and deliberate obfuscation of truth. Moreover, the earlier speech did not mention Monica Lewinsky and her family – a form of non-renouncing apology, which is a rhetorical ploy to generalize one’s actions, in a bid to justify one’s wrongdoing in a noncommittal manner. Such an approach diminishes the graveness of the action for which an entire nation was ashamed of, not to mention the tremendous social and psychological damage it did to Monica Lewinsky and her family.

Who Am I

I was mature for my age since everyone else was a bit older and so I also was independent and a bit grown-up compared to most kids my age. Most of my friends used to annoy me all the time during my adolescent years for acting so immaturely. My life as a child was a bundle of mischief and humor for the whole family. I remember a time many years back when my family and I went to a restaurant for lunch after fishing, and while waiting for our meals to be brought by the waitress, I took one of my crayons-I never left the house without them for some reason- and toss it to my brother Tommy who was seated opposite me. However, instead of hitting Tommy, the crayon flew past the side of his head and hit a man who was seated behind him at t...
