Particular pleasing has been to see Huma growing curiosity in exploring her immediate environment for extended periods as the year progresses. She not only extended the length of time she will manipulate objects or maintains physical contact with the substance during sensory exploration sessions to gain more information about them, but she has also extended her tactile exploration techniques. She will now press the bottom to operate a simple toy, squeeze and press substances (e.g. play-dough, corn flour, etc.) rather than just patting the surface.
She has also used her fingertips to scrutinize an object rather than automatically putting everything into her mouth during her explorations. As the year progressed, she has demonstrated ever-growing exploratory procedures to different substances, materials, and objects presented across all class activities with growing independence. For example, she can now explore substances independently with familiar routine /activities with an adult, demonstrating only once she needs to explore or get the objects to work.
She has also made encouraging progress in understanding her ability to control her environment by using switches. She has responded well to the range of activities where she has applied her knowledge of pressing the switches once to control equipment and wait for the result before pressing the switch again rather than using tapping action as before. She has shown a growing ability to apply her strategies to new equipment. She has become a little more persistent in looking for solutions other than an adult doing it if she does not initially succeed.
For example, she carefully examines objects by visually scanning objects and using her fingertips to search for the bottom to operate. Huma has made steady progress this year within this curriculum area. She has learnt new routines and has shown an ability to anticipate steps within this routine once they have become familiar.
