In this way, it then becomes clear how all three components are interrelated as the development of one concept leads to the emergence of another.

However, it is important to note that even with the delegation the leader still assumes overall responsibility for the subordinate’s actions. A supervisor’s personal accountability cannot be delegated because it is upon the leader to assume control over the unit he/she is in charge of (Luecke & McIntosh, 2009). Being a leader comes with this responsibility and enforces overall accountability on the leader/supervisor. Technically speaking, a supervisor who can delegate accountability may as well be delegating the very essence of their leadership thereby diminishing any reason for them to be referred to as so. Most supervisors are however reluctant to delegate responsibility since they do not trust subordinates to carry out the tasks as required without their constant supervision. A subordinate’s failure is taken as the supervisor’s error, and it makes him/her liable for someone else’s work that most supervisors fear and try to avoid (Tracy, 2013).

There are many advantages a supervisor can enjoy from delegation. The supervisor can benefit from more time to undertake strategic thinking sessions and look for further development opportunities for the team and firm as a whole. Another benefit would also be a motivated and efficient team that can still function without its leader’s physical presence. This also leads to recognition as a leader capable of effective organization skills boosting one’s career prospects (Vuckotich, 2010).
