Field of business and accounting In my childhood days, I started to show keen interest in the field of business and accounting because of my family background. When I was a teenager, I already had a sense of making profit. Studying in middle school, I did not get any pocket money. For this reason, I started lending ruler to my classmate who sat next to me and for that I charged her 2 dollars each time. Later on, in my high school years, I learned the basic concept of accounting because I had to list a statement to show how I distributed the money during the time my mother gave out allowances to us. Even presently, I will not pay for any product that I consider unnecessary although those products are the popular items amongst youngsters. My friends always persuade me to buy an Ipod, but this item for me is considered an unnecessary purchase because I will not use it that often; I can play music whenever I want to, such as at home and in car. Gradually, I have developed an interest of trade and hence saving money. For me, learning is a process of attaining knowledge, value and skill; not only through study but also through working experience. As a result, when I started to see that I had an interest in the business field that was the time when I decided to work for my uncle’s company for a few months before I thought of pursuing my career in the United States. Although I worked as a receptionist there, I learned that in order to accomplish a job, the same required diverse skills as well as knowledge from different individuals and more than that communication forms up as an important skill in the field of business nonetheless. In the year 2005, I started working in my father’s company as an accounting assistant. My job was to make a simple statement of different accounts, create wire and transfer money to those companies that we dealt with because I was one of the authorities in my father's company. Other than that, I started to learn how to use information systems to track financial performance. Since working as an accountant assistant consumes a lot of time as they look up the performance of a business, therefore, I learned not only the accounting skills but also acquired the operations necessary to run a business in the first place. My interest and work experience since then has exposed me to the enormous potentials present within the business world. To build on knowledge and qualities required in this field, I believe studying the Business and Economics programs offered by University of California would prepare me to become a successful business person in the very near future. I consider leadership as the most significant personal quality that I can contribute to the University of California. I believe that the presence of tolerant spirit within a leader is necessary for a community because it gives people guidance and a sense of direction. Nonetheless, through my performance at work and the participation in student organizations, I have demonstrated my capability for not only my personal aspect of leadership skills but also for professional leadership talents. A key aspect of my leadership ability involves my willingness to take the first move. As a new immigrant within United States, I experienced a really hard time understanding the diversities in cultures in the first couple of years of my moving. Moreover, I did not know what to do because of the different systems prevalent within the education sector. I believe the numerous students who study abroad encounter the same situation as mine. In order to assist the new college students, especially those who just come to the U.S. for a short period of time, I formed a new club, International Business Club with the help of my friends. I became the Vice President of the Club during the spring period in the year 2005. We set an objective to help new students find out whether they had interest in international business and whether they should major in this subject at all; other than that, I also encouraged them to participate in every club meeting to attain more and more knowledge concentrated in the field of international business. The club meeting can also bring students from different countries to a single platform and expand our club members’ views on the international business aspects. In addition, our last meeting invited an advisor to give a speech and the members asked questions which they had in mind. As a result, our club successfully got more than a hundred people signed on the ‘join-a-club day’ as well as gathered more than thirty members in the beginning of fall semester alone. Due to doubts that the people have in their abilities, they may fail to take the first step; however, I was able to overcome the fear that usually clouds one’s thought, so now I enjoy my triumph and think of pacing ahead towards my next destination. Another characteristic of mine that shapes my leadership ability are my communication skills. I can communicate pretty well with my family and/or acquaintances as well as have no problem having good interaction with others in social gatherings. In club, we always interact with people who think and behave differently from ourselves. Since our members are from different cultures, the club is diverse in thought and vision. It was after that I realized that the diversity within the club is what makes us unique in the truest sense. I saw the opportunity to utilize this special feature that we have for the development of the club. In the first two meetings, I tried to connect the members through their introduction of themselves. All the members shared their experiences, academic goals and visions. Knowing where each person comes from and listening to others brings me at further understanding about each member; it also helps me setup the activities that members would be interested at doing. Finally, I believe my tough personality is another qualification to develop my skill as concerns to leadership. Before I came to the United States, I had never learned but after I came here, I discovered that I had a difficulty in communicating and understanding the people who speak English. Thus in all fairness, as a late language learner, I had to face a lot of problems. Sometimes, I just want to give up because I cannot get any improvement and there are difficulties related with pronunciation no matter how hard I did but I made it a point to study nonetheless. However, in the most hopeless of times, Mt. San Antonio College accepted my application and I decided to continue my struggle until I could just forget about it. At the beginning, I could handle it because all of my classmates were international students. Nevertheless, when I took G.E classes, most of my classmates were native speakers. The class involves a lot of vocabulary, but I tried my best in those classes. Now, I am maintaining a G.P.A of 3.92. Not just being tough in my education, but also in club is what I can boast of. At the beginning when the club was formed, I did not fully understand the meaning of being a leader. I was a person who easily gave up when I met an obstacle because it would not affect my G.P.A. Even so, I soon realized that being strong is also important because it is related to my responsibility, organization and motivation as well. After knowing that, when I face difficulties, I refuse to surrender; I will do my best to solve the problem and I will never regret what I have done thus far. I learned a great deal about leadership by overcoming adversity and the experience undoubtedly improved my ability to handle challenging situations. Thus, I firmly believe my leadership will be a positive influence in the University of California. Parents always pave the way for their sons’ futures, and give the best to them no matter how trying the circumstances are. Same is the case with my parents who did the same thing for me and my siblings. Therefore, my parents decided to operate a company in United States because it is the easiest way to get a visa for the whole family and they also wanted to try if they could earn money in U.S or otherwise. However, as a result of the same, it turned out not that rosy since my parents’ English knowledge is limited. However, when they discovered that they cannot earn as much money as in Hong Kong, they still want to stay here because the United States educational system provides us a better environment for learning. Consequently, I was under a lot of pressure and this pressure made me to improve not only in academics but also in my personality as well since I do not want to disappoint my parents. My parents give out a lot in order to make me achieve something solid concerning with my future and I really hope I can get in University of California to let my parents know that I do understand their hearts. Moreover, in 2005 fall, my parents’ company had some problems; I had to spend most of my time in there to help them. As a result, I did not maintain a good grade in Math 140, which is a business calculus class. However, it gave me a good lesson as I learned at managing time in a more effective and efficient manner.
