I began to develop an interest in the field of business and accounting early on my childhood because of my family background. As a teenager, I had already a sense of making profit. Studying in middle school, I did not have any pocket money so I thought of lending my ruler to a seatmate for two dollars. I learned the basic concept of accounting later on in high school because my mother made me do statements on how I spent my money from the allowance that she gave me. These days, I do not buy things that I consider unnecessary.

Some of my friends encourage me to buy an ipod, but I know that it wouldn't sensible because I know I won't use it often. I can always listen to music conveniently while at home or at my car. Eventually, I knew I had interest in business making and saving money. For me, learning is not only a process of gaining knowledge, values and skills through formal study but from experiences in working as well. After realizing my interest in the business field, I decided to work for a few months in a company that was owned by my father's friend before going to the United States.

Even by just being a receptionist, I learned that it takes a lot of diverse skills such as good communications and sensitivity of other's needs is needed to do a good job in any business. I started working for my father's company as an accounting assistant in year 2005. I was assigned in making simple statements of different accounts and doing money wire transactions to companies that we deal with. Aside from this, I learned to use information systems to track the financial performance of the company.

Through work, I discovered more on the enormous potential of the business world. To develop knowledge and skills required in this world, I therefore believe that studying the Business and Economic program offered in the University of California would prepare me to become a successful businessman. I consider leadership as a significant quality that I can contribute to the University of California. I have participated and initiated my cooperation in my past work and as a student in school. I know I can be a good leader because I am initiative.

A capable leader is necessary in a community so that people can have the right amount of support and guidance. It has been two years since I migrated in America and I can say that I had a difficult time dealing with the culture differences. Like other immigrant students, I too had a hard time with the difference in the education systems. In order to assist students who are new migrants and fresh in college, I formed the international business club together with my friends and occupied the vice president position on the club last spring 2005.

We helped new students assist them in their interest and at the same time hone their knowledge in the business field. Club meetings are also being encouraged so that students from different countries can assemble and discuss our views on international businesses. In fact, our last club activity was an open session with a guest advisor. A hundred people signed in to participate and as a result, thirty members joined the club at the beginning of fall semester. Another characteristic that supports my leadership skills is my communication skills.

I am not only adept in communicating with family and friends but also in social occasions where one meets new people most likely. Since members of the club come from different countries, thoughts and visions are apparently diverse. The diversity in our club made us unique and there I saw an opportunity to use that uniqueness in developing our club. In the first two meetings, all members shared their origin, experiences and their visions on their academic future. I gained an understanding on their perspectives and had foreseen events that the members would be interested in participating.

Lastly, I believe my persistent personality is another substantial quality that will help me develop my leadership skills. I never studied hard in school before I came to the United States. But when I came to live in the United States, I discovered that I needed to do a lot of practicing and learning the English language. I was a late language learner and sometimes it made me want to give up because my pronunciation and understanding of the English language was not improving in the way that I would have hoped it to be. Mt. San Antonio College however accepted my application despite my shortcomings in the English language.

I decide to struggle more to improve myself. At first, I thought I could handle it because all my classmates were international students and that we were on common ground. G.E. classes were however difficult because most of my classmates were native speakers. I did however do my best on those subjects even though it required a wide range of vocabulary. At the present, I am maintaining a 3.92 G.P.A. and only proves that it serves to be persistent in my studies and in the activities in our club.

I did not understand the full meaning of being a leader when the club first started but afterwards, obstacles taught me that the responsibilities of the organization and the pressures of studying were there to help me learn more about myself and what I can do. Later on, I realized that surrendering in times of difficulties and obstacles should never be an option. Challenging situations were there to teach me to get through adversities and the experience undoubtedly improved my capability in leading.

It is therefore my belief that my leadership skills will be a positive influence in the University of California. As parents, they try their best pave way for their children's future by giving them the best they can. My parents do that for me and my siblings. That was their common goal when they put up a company here in America, so that as a family we could be together. They wanted to try their luck in a foreign for us, their children. Their efforts were not that successful because my parent's were not that skilled in communicating in English.

They still however decided to endure the difficulty of the language barriers because they learned that the education system in America can provide us a better quality of education. I admit, I was constantly pressured to do well in school because I was afraid to disappoint my parents who sacrificed a lot. I really hope to get into the University of California to achieve my dreams and repay my parents' hardship. Moreover, in the fall of 2005, I had to spend lots of time in my father's company to help them because it was dealt with some problems.

The consequence was that I did not do well in one of my class which was Math 140, a business calculus class. It gave me a good lesson though, and that is proper management of time is basically needed to be efficient in the things that should be done. At the present, I have withdrawn from any of my classes and hope to do very well in the coming semester.
