AIA of Ethics General Canon QUTAR AIA 1 An architect should ensure that he is honest regardless of the situation that he is. The individual might be in a public setting or a private setting. An architect has the responsibility of acting in an integral manner at all times. Rule 1.101 An architect ought to carry out his activities showing utmost competency to fulfill the requirements set by the various groups. QUTAR CODE AIA 1.2 An architect who is registered should not carry out side businesses that have the consequent effect of affecting his career. This is unless the business is well agreed upon by other parties that may be affected by involvement. QUTAR CODE AIA 1.3 An Architect should not rely on any other undefined means for his career success but should rather pay attention to maximizing his ability and performance while at the same time incorporating experience to advance. Obligations to the Public QUTAR CODE AIA 2.1 The Architect should always ensure that he carries out his activities with full knowledge that the architecture field has a reputation so high that minor mistakes might lead to its tarnishing. QUTAR CODE AIA 2.2 When associating with people outside of the workplace, it is the task of the architect to keep in mind that he ought not engage in activities with people that may affect his profession negatively. An architect who holds a senior or any other form of position in another organization ought not incorporate the resources of his other job to his professional career. This is because it may not auger well with particular cases in his professional work Rule 2.201 An individual holding a position as an architect should not mix his architectural practices with his other practices. Commentary: Engaging in two businesses at a time is legal as long as the other business does not impede with the operating of the person’s profession. Not incorporating resources from the other business is important because it ensures that the people involved in the other business do not register fails due to insufficient resources. QUTAR CODE AIA 2.3 It is not allowed for the architect to participate in any open architecture competition with other members of the public. However, this is allowed only if the executive council approves of it. Rule 2.301 An architect, should make it known to the public that he is not allowed to participate in any competition that is carried out to show prowess in the architectural field QUTAR CODE AIA 2.4 An architect should ensure that he carries out positive and sincere publicity. Rule 2.401 It is illegal for an architect to carry out any form of false publicity that seeks to show his position is better than that of others. This is commonly done through exaggeration and laudatory which is very wrong. Commentary: It is the responsibility of the architect to give valid information to the public regarding his career. There are many individuals in the architecture arena in contemporary times and this has led to a great deal of competition. With the competition, there comes the urge to show dominance in the field to capture the hearts of many people. Obligations to the client QUTAR CODE AIA 2.5 A registered architect should carry out activities to the best of their abilities paying a lot of consideration to the needs of the customer (AIA 17). The architect has the responsibility of ensuring that he carries his work appropriately to the full satisfaction of the client. It is the responsibility of the architect to show prowess while remaining candid when dealing with customers. Rule 2.501 An architect should make sure that he treats all the information offered to him by clients privately and should ensure that no outside party gets this information. QUTAR CODE AIA 2.6 When dealing with independent consultants, it is important for the architect to listen to the price quoted by the client or rather potential client prior to mentioning it Rule 2.601 It is the inappropriate for the architect to mention any price during initial discussions with clients prior to the client offering his price personally. Commentary The architecture field is wide and has many players that have different roles in the daily running of architectural firms. For this reason, an architect might ask for a higher amount of money to increase commission that is illegal. The architect may even state a price too high for the potential client to make which might have the consequent of chasing the client away. QUTAR CODE AIA 2.7 Prior to making any engagement, it is the responsibility of the architect to offer the potential client with the important parameters. These are rules that he ought to follow and the policies of the firm prior to engaging him in negotiations regarding the fees. This is very important because a potential client might have the required resources or even finances but is not disciplined enough to follow the instructions set forth by the organization he so wishes to work with. Obligations to the Profession QUTAR CODE AIA 3.1 The architect should act impartially at all times to ensure that his profession continues to enjoy the high reputation that it bears. QUTAR CODE AIA 3.2 In the case of bankruptcy, the architect ought to resign before the executive committee decides to throw him out of his profession (AIA 31). Commentary: The Architecture field is very tasking and has very many people. It is impossible to keep up with the activities that all the architects take part in. The architecture field is regarded very highly in society and ensuring that the participants are always working appropriately and maintaining their lives well is imperative. If an architect fails to meet the standards set it is important that he is dissolved from the architecture committee to avoid embarrassing fellow architectures. QUTAR CODE AIA .3 The architect is required to maintain the high name of the profession from the manner in which he carries out his activities. QUTAR CODE AIA 3.4 The architect should ensure that he allocates a specific amount of time to the institute from his normal working hours. Commentary: Architecture is very involving and requires many person-hours to cover all the aspects when dealing with a client. It is normal not to finish a certain amount of work within the initially set time- frame. It is thus important for the architect to sacrifice part of their time to the profession and doing this will ensure a smooth continuation of work in the firm. Moreover, faster completion of tasks earns the firm a higher reputation in the contemporary competitive architecture market and the consequent of this is increased client requests for the company. QUTAR CODE AIA 3.5 It is the responsibility of the architect to act in a fair manner towards the institution Rule 3.501 The architect should not accept any form of fees aside from the ones initially agreed upon by the contract. Commentary: Many are times in the contemporary world that people have the urge to get money from different sources other than the previously stated ones. Failure to follow the right instructions and carrying out money laundering is an activity that can render the institution affiliated with the architect corrupt. Corruption in the architecture environment is one concept that is punishable by the executive committee through the shutting down of the institution completely. Obligation to colleagues QUTAR CODE AIA 4.1 An architect should not sub- let work without agreement with the client (AIA 54). Rule 4.01 It is inappropriate for an architect to incorporate the skills of another architect having agreed with the client that he will take the job Commentary: This is because there are people. The reason behind this is there are many people that may possess many skills in the architecture field but are rather lazy. These people have the reputation of looking for someone in their career field to delegate the work. The most common effect of this is subtle work that is not up to the customer’s expectations. This normally has the architect that carried out the activity fired. It is thus the responsibility of the initial architect to communicate effectively with the client to understand the manner in which the work ought to be carried out without involving a third party. QUTAR CODE AIA 4.2 An architect should protect his co-workers by carrying out ethically upright activities. Rule 4.201 An architect can deal with another client that a fellow architect has signed if they decide to incorporate his assistance due to various problems coming up. Commentary: In the contemporary working environment, many people engage in activities that are meant to assist the company in developing but end up messing up. In case a co-worker is having a problem dealing with a client, it is the ethical responsibility of the architect to assist in understanding the problematic issue. QUTAR CODE AIA 4.3 An architect shall not lie about his competence using the profile of a fellow architect. Commentary: Many people in the modern world get into certain careers not out of passion but for the money. This has the effect of having them not performing as well as expected and they consequently fail. They thus take up the profile of a fellow architect and advertise through them. When the client is served, he gets poor work and the person who is affected by this is the innocent architect whose profile was used. It is thus the responsibility of every architect to ensure that he uses his profile while advertising. Work Cited American Institute of Architects (AIA).
