Extract of sample "Multiculturalism and Diversity"

Since 2005, the issue of multiculturalism and diversity has largely been addressed in the ACA Code of Ethics. In 1995, it appeared in section A (A.2.). It simply indicated that the counselor should actively try to understand the client’s cultural background. The changes made in this section in the subsequent revisions have been aimed at refining the message of this section. Hence, in 2005, it was revised to specify that counselors should not only strive to understand the culture; but also, communicate in a manner that is culturally and developmentally suitable for the benefit of the patient (A.2.c). It continues to indicate that a qualified interpreter or translator can be hired with the consent of the client and a full understanding of the cultural implications. This change enabled the counselors to understand the connection between cultural diversity and ethics in counseling better.

Receiving Gifts

Although mildly related to cultural issues, the ACA ethical code A.10.3 was also revised in 2005 and maintained in the 2014 revision. In 1995, the code cautioned counselors from receiving any goods or services (apart from the predetermined payment) from clients in exchange for their services. This is because it has the potential to create conflict, distortion, and exploitation in the relationship. In contrast, the 2005 and 2014 codes advise the counselor to evaluate the client’s motivation for giving the gift, its monetary value, the account of the therapeutic relationship, as well as, his motivation to choose to accept or decline the gift. This is because small gifts in some cultures represent gratitude and respect. Therefore declining the gift might be rude.  As a result, the code gave the counselor some allowance to interpret issues of culture, as well as, maintain a cordial relationship with the client.

Groups and Families

In section B, the group and Families (B.2.1) which were initially addressed in the same section, were separated. The 2005 and 2014 codes consider separate codes under B.4.b and B.4.a. More importantly, the confidentiality clause for Couples and Family Counseling (B.4.b) was adjusted. Previously, information regarding a family member could not be divulged to another member without consent. However, the current code requires the counselor to identify “the client” and explain the expected limitations in confidentiality. In addition, the 1995 code of ethics definition of family (Family involvement A.1.d) was changed to Support Network Involvement (A.1.d) in 2014. The 2005 definition was revised to include other parties that have a positive impact on the client’s well-being with his consent. Therefore, the counselor has much more to consider in terms of confidentiality and family.
