I’m Number four; the Movie Part one Legal requirements and importance of maintaining confidentiality Film making is a creative venture and time, money and personnel are required in order to produce a high quality film and therefore, significant resources and attention are needed in the legal aspects of filmmaking. A successful movie involves negotiation and preparation of numerous contracts and legal arrangements. The producer should establish a limited liability company to act as the production entity for the movie (Goldberg, 2012 p16). 1. This company will shield the producers from personal liability arising from legal conflicts from the movie, like in the case of ‘I am number four’. By establishing the company, the producer can raise finance for the production of the film. The filmmaker is required to seek legal counsel regarding issues to deal with the entity’s formation, the tax consequences and seek advice on state and federal securities law compliance. Another legal requirement is acquisition of intellectual property rights i.e. the screenplay rights. The acquisition of these rights is written on a purchase agreement book with the owner of the intellectual property as this will give the production company the right to acquire the intellectual property. The film crew should be engaged on a written contract outlining their pay, duties and conditions of work. If minors will be involved, the company should obtain written permission from the minor’s parents or legal custodians and comply with laws regarding minor employment. Confidentiality is important in filmmaking since it ensures that the information regarding the movie’s production, crew/cast and any other person involved in the production process are not shared with third parties without the consent of the involved persons (Klodt & Wosh, 2005 p 43).2. Part two Analysis and breakdown of the script John Smith and eight other children were sent to planet earth form Lorien, a foreign planet. Lorien was invaded by the Mogadorians who prior to their invasion, destroyed their own planet. The main reason for sending John Smith to earth is to protect him and Henri, a warrior guardian is assigned this duty. John Smith has supernatural abilities such as great strength, agility and speed and possesses the power of telekinesis, the ability to transmit plasma light by use of his hands (Lore, 2010, p28). 3. The Mogadorians learn of the existence of these nine children and they come to planet earth to find and kill them. The Loriens can only be killed in a systematic manner, three are dead and John Smith is the next one, number four. John Smith gets to know of this and together with his guardian, they move to Paradise, an old farm in Ohio. Here, John befriends Sam Goode and Bernie Kosar, a dog. John falls in love with Hart, an amateur photographer and her ex-boyfriend James Mark continuously torments them. Mark, together with his friends, tries to capture John during the festival of the Halloween and they chase them into the woods, catch up with John and beat him up. John uses his power to protect himself and Sarah. In this process, Sam witnesses John’s ability after which he comes to learn of his true identity. The local sheriff, who is Mark’s father, interrogates Henri on John’s whereabouts and notices that Henries’ residence has a state of the art surveillance system. Henri, noticing danger, tells John that they should leave Ohio since many people around are mistrustful of them, this is on top of John’s lack of control on the powers he posses. John refuses because of the love his for Sarah. On the other hand, the Mogadorians continue to look for John, and Teresa Palma, Lorien number six decides to fight the Mogadorians as an alternative to running away since her guardian was killed. Mogadarian search for John bears fruit as they are able to track him down and as bait, they capture Henri his guardian. In their attempt to rescue Henri, he dies leaving John and Sam to fight for their lives. In the fight, John and Sam manage to escape with some Lorien artifacts which include a blue rock that work as tracking device for Loriens. Sams father, a conspiracy theorist had such a device but he disappeared while tracking aliens in Mexico. When John goes to say goodbye to Sarah and Sam goes to pick this other tracking device, they find out that the Mogadorians have framed John and Henri for the killing of the conspiracy theorists and terming them as terrorists. When Mark, the bully sees John, he notifies the Sheriff who was his father and they manage to corner John and Sarah. In the event, Sarah falls from a fall and John is forced to rescue her using his supernatural abilities. Due to this, his power is in full display and they escape to the local high school. The Mogadarian commander arrives in Paradise after learning of Johns existence and he orders a blockade of all exit points out of paradise using trucks. Mark and the town sheriff confront him and as a result, Marks father is injured in the violence. The commander compels Mark to show him John’s hiding place and Mark obliges taking him to a school where he knows it is Sarah’s hideout. At the school, Sarah, Sam and John are assaulted by the Mogadorians, who brought two giant monsters hunt them. The three kids are saved by Bernie Kosar, the dog, number six (Teresa Palmer) who decides to fight the Mogadarians instead of running away. This was after her guardian was killed. Bernie Kosar is a Chimera sent by Johns parents to offer him protection. After the dog battles the monsters, it slips back to a beagle with a wounded jaw. John and number six, using their teleporting powers block the Mogadarian energy attacks eventually defeating them and killing their commander by overheating his energy grenades. After the battle, number six, John, Sam and Bernie Kosar bring together their blue rocks and learn of the location of four other existing Loriens. John agrees to let Sam come with them with the hope of finding his father but they leave behind Sarah and Mark who redeems himself by a lie to his father, the Sheriff on the location of John and returns a box belonging to John’s father. They set off looking for other Loriens with the aim of protecting earth from the invading Mogadorians. The movie ends with John’s confession that Paradise is the first town he left, this time without Henri but also the first town where he has a cause to come back. Part three Analysis of the principle character and characteristics (Mogadorian character) The Mogadorian Commander This role is played by Kevin Durand. He portrays himself as an authoritative leader with full composure. The commander is tall, wore ankle boots that made him approximately 75". He was scary since he had gills on his face and tattoos all over his head. He had sharp teeth and stubbed nose all this making him look as a bad person. The commander led the Mogadarian into invading Lorien after destroying their own planet and later on after realizing the existence of other Loriens in Earth, he decides to pursue them. The Mogadarian commander is witfull. He managed to hatch a lie against John and Henri on the murder of conspiracy theorist, this in turn makes the society turn against John. The commander is violent. His principle aim was to kill the existing Loriens, including John. After tracking John, he had all the exits of the town blocked in the result injuring the Sheriff of the town. Part Four Description of the roles of the key members of production team Michael Bay As the producer of the movie, his role involved obtaining the rights to create the length of the screenplay. He oversaw the process of creating the movie which includes supervising, coordinating and controlling major aspects of the project. Inclusion are hiring the film director and looking cash for effective production of the movie. He also hires other personnel such as executive directors and accountant. D.J. Caruso He is the director of the movie. He was responsible for developing the vision of the film, deciding on how the film should look like. He was responsible for turning the script; I am number four into a series of shots. He directs the tone of the movie and what the audience should expect from the cinema. He was responsible for deciding the lens effects, lighting, camera angles and setting the design of the movie. He worked with editors to ensure emotions of the scene reflect which character is driving the narrative. His role also involved advising on color rating of the finished images of the movie. This is important in adding warmth to the composition of the shots to mirror the exciting subtext of the character. He equally took part in the musical composition and the film’s sound mix. David Valdes, Chris Bender and J.C Spink are the executive producers of the movie. Their roles included: Supervising the completion of the movie from its initial stages, its distribution to the theaters. Assembling materials for the movie, getting the scripts written and finding financing for the movie. Hiring the director of the movie, cinematograph and assisting in casting the lead actors. Identifying the location of shooting the movie as well as detailed production plan. Monitoring the production timetable and budget of the movie while keeping its original track and giving creative suggestions to the director of the movie. Informing the studio about the progress of filming the movie therefore acting as a liaison between the studio and the films technical and creative staff. Reviewing the edited cut of the films therefore giving suggestions on revising the film to produce a final product. Working with the movie distributors and reviewing the distributors advertising campaign for the film. Guillermo Navarro He is the cinematograph of the movie. His role involved working with the director on visualization of scenes relating to issues of framing, camera angle and movement, lighting and technical issues that translate a script and storyboard into images of a film. He was also involved operating the camera thereby composing movie images, adjusting focus, using filter and setting the audio-level. Jim Page and Filippone They are the film editors and their role includes assembling the footages of the film. They did this by mechanically putting pieces of the film together and cutting off the film slates. They creatively developed layers of images, dialogue, story as well as actors performances crafting them into a whole cohesive body. The book highlights the legal channels or requirements needed in order to avoid numerous lawsuits concerning any film production.
