Pushing Tin - Film Analysis - Movie Review Example

Nick goes ahead to warn his supervisor after learning that Nick had previously pulled some risky moves while landing on a commercial airline. Nick meets his new colleague’s wife. Russell’s wife is at the supermarket sobbing and he consoles her leading to a romantic relationship. Mary confesses the affair, which leads to an improved marriage life between both Russell and Mary. Nick later Confronts Russell and is surprised about Russell’s response to the affair. As a drama, the movie does not show any dramatic turns even at this moment as the events appear grey and plain.

Connie, Nick’s wife, becomes interested in Russell and Nick is afraid that Russell may seek revenge by having an affair with Connie. This part of the film was interesting and a little realistic as jealousy is evident although it is a norm that has been repeated in almost any other romantic movie. Actually, jealousy is the foundation of most romantic comedies and thrillers that make the characters do crazy things such as having affairs.

On their flight back home, Connie tells Nick that she had an affair with Russell. The plane later makes an odd turn, and Nick thinks that Russell is making the turn intentionally to harass him. Soon after, a bomb threat is announced. The facility is evacuated and both Russell and Nick offer to stay behind so that they can land all the planes safely before the bomb explodes in approximately twenty-six minutes. Nick and Russell manage to direct all the planes except for one plane, whose radio contact has gone off. Nick eventually leaves the facility. However, Russell remains behind and tries to make contact with one of the passengers on board the plane that has lost radio contact. The events that occur at this moment are meant to increase the audience’s emotions which fails due to the way it is presented. It does not have any suspense scenes and one could easily predict the outcomes of the event. Personally, it did not have any effect on me as I was almost half asleep due to the flat and mono-pace of the movie which did not provide any entertainment or excitement.

In the end, Russell is considered to be a hero although the threat is termed as a prank Nick and his wife Connie separate and Nick’s performance at work is negatively affected leading to him losing his job. Nick reconciles with Russell to get his life in order. This was predictable from the start; the movie could not end in any other way and was never intended to end with the two main characters, not on good terms. The ways they reconcile are what seems unrealistic.

I think the director, Mike Newell, was trying to make a movie that covers two genres that is drama and comedy, a task that he did not achieve at all. It has a slow pacing throughout the film which is not expected it should be dramatic. Although it presents the stress and challenges air traffic controllers experience in their work, it is truly unrealistic since none of the things they do in the flight control center is true. If it were true then I would definitely restrain them from flying as they act like maniacs or children who have no idea of what their actions may result to. The film was generally a double tragedy as the act's talent was wasted in the making of such a ridiculous movie and it takes a direction that does not fit the plot it is set in. Taking a plot based on air traffic control and turning the film barely into a romantic comedy is not what I would have predicted and they went ahead and proved that it does not fit into each other, as the film is a total catastrophe.
