of Worcester Essay plan “The Game of Thrones” TV Series number: 11012453 Due 15-April The Game of Thrones The purpose of this essay is to introduce the topic, which will be focused into the next assignment. The topic will be the famous television series named “The Game of Thrones”. This television show will be analysed by using “existentialism” and whether there are existentialist elements in the TV program will also be scrutinized. Context The Game of Thrones is essentially a fantasy program and it was premiered on HBO on April 17, 2001.
This program has been renewed for fifth and sixth season. The fifth season has been premiered on April 12, 2015. David Benioff and D. B. Weiss have created it and this program is based on a novel named “A Song of Ice and Fire” by George R.R Martin. In the Game of Thrones, different families struggle for the throne of the Seven Kingdom. The series also show violence and sexual violence towards women. Theoretical ideas In order to examine the program, the existentialism school of thought will be used in the essay so that one should know whether the element of existentialism is present in this TV series or not.
One should define what existentialism is before it applies to the program. Existentialism is a philosophical theory which focuses on the existence of the human being particularly individual’s existence and it also believes that the life is meaningless but human beings find their own meaning in it (Tymieniecka 2009, p. 377). Analysis of the program Now the question is that how existentialism can be related to this TV show is the question of consideration for the sake of analysis. As it is told above that existentialism is the philosophy that believes in the meaninglessness of life besides believing that individual finds his or her own meaning in life.
If an individual finds his or her meaning of life, the meaning of life can be different from one person to another. Why the noble families in the Game of Thrones are fighting for the throne and what is their purpose of fighting for the throne? The noble families are fighting with each other because they are trying to find a purpose in life or find a meaning in life to spend the life. The families are trying to give a meaning to their life so that they could say that they have a target to achieve, have an aim of life and by achieving the target or fulfilling the aim, their lives would become meaningful.
Similarly, why the people are inclined to violence and sexual assault? The answer is because their lives needed an anchor to hold and also because their existence is meaningless which compels them to violence and to sexual assault. In addition to above, one should think whether the life is really meaningless or it is people who are making the life meaningless? It seems that life is not meaningless but the powerful and fortunate people, like in the “Game of Throne”, are making it meaningless through violence and through the exploitation of the less fortune and less aware people.
If life is not meaningless then what is the meaning of life. The meaning of the life seems to live it with peace, love as well as to live it for the sake of others not for one’s own self. Other relevant sources The website “TV Content Analysis: Techniques and Application” (Kompatsiaris, Merialdo & Lian 2011) will also be used for analyse. This site will helpin organizing the paper structurally and it is also relevant to the assignment because it is about analysis of a TV program. The book name “Existentialism” will also be used to look at existentialism from a different perspective (Flynn 2009).
The book “A Song of Ice and Fire” by George R.R Martin, will be used as well, to see how far the program has been twisted or how far the program is the replica of the book as well as to check whether the program is successful in delivering the themes of the novel (Martin 2011).
