Italian Futurism and Precisionism - Movie Review Example

Movie Review Introduction Movies are audio-visual representations of events, phenomenon, activities and case scenarios that serve purposes similar to articles. Therefore the difference between the two exists in the in the form of message communication to the audience. While video analyses involve listening and seeing moving objects and characters to make review and analysis for the same, written articles involves seeing and reviewing what one has seen. Picassos "Guernica" (min 170 words) Pablo Picasso’s first major debut in painting came in 1937 when he painted Guernica. In the painting, Pablo gives a valid representation of the state of wars in the technologically developing world. The painting specifically represented the most heartening horrors associated with war and the likely technological inhumane that is used as a critical warfare of the super powers. It serves to warn of the upcoming terrors and mishaps for the next generations regarding cross-border armed conflicts. This artistic work had a story to tell of the horrifying war event that had taken place earlier in the year during when German and French air forces unprecedently bombed a culturally significant village in Spain. The village got a horrifying ambush leaving the whole nation dismantled in terms of security and military operations. A lot of lessons and or messages come from this piece of work. First, from the painting we can clearly ascertain the bad sides of armed cross-border wars. It leaves innocent people dead, maimed or displaced from their homesteads. Second, it portrays how horrifying war can be to the victims. This means that apart from death and displacement, wars also maim the victims. Besides, the military personal show disorganization in a manner that they may not have time to retaliate. Tubism: Leger Léger made a major artistic debut in 1913 in painting. During then, he managed to paint a series of abstract studies that he later referred to as Contrast of Forms. One of the motives for creating the paintings was to make an illustration of his theory that the strongest pictorial effects could only be achieved by juxtaposing contrasts of colour, of both straight and curved lines, and of both flat and solids planes. This is what culminated into one his lectures in 1914 on Contemporary Achievements in Painting. In the lectures, Léger made comparisons between the contrasts in his painting and the landscape appearance of billboards. From the video, the narrator does not explain to the audience where and how Léger began his artistic work, the progresses he made and how he ended up with the work after sometime. However, his paintings were unique enough to credit him with such talent. The rare mix of contrasting color tones, texture and intensity is evident in his piece of work. Italian Futurism @ Guggenheim (2014) The Italian futurism highlights the artistic representation of the future perspectives of the world by a young, vocal and vibrant Italian artist, Filippo Tommaso Marinetti. His artwork launched in 1909 represented him as a modern, insurgent and young lad in the early 20th century. The paintings consisted of ultra-modern machines, imaginary objects falling from the skies to earth and vibrant color. The work that began as a revolutionary artistic movement culminated into a more formidable crop of futuristic painting artists. The futurism went through three distinct periods. First phase was the heroic stage during when the artists tried to capture intensity of Italy on the verge of extreme changes. The painting made by the artists also included that of speed. The painting advanced into that of the modern eye view, occasionally and there was occasional distraction of the artist by the global modernization. The paintings merely depict a future world of disillusionment, where everything seem to be moving in whirl motion of confusion and directionless. The second phase began in the 1920s during when the artists were concerned of all artistic forms apart from just painting. They succeeded in performance with food design and music. The third phase took effect towards the end of 1920s during when the artists majored on space painting to depict aviation, space navigation and objects in space. Their pieces of work were mostly inconsistent. From the video footage, the narrator does not give an account of what could have led Filippo and his team to venture into futurism art including their motivation and aspirations. It is not clear what their motive could have been in pursuing that unique form of art. However, it also worth applauding as being an important key to understanding what would happen in the world there after in the form of technological advancement, globalization, transport improvement and speed. Precisionism - Georgia OKeeffe (min 170 words) Georgia O’Keeffe, an American female artist began working with abstraction in the early 20th century. By then she was among the few American artists exploring this means of expression. Throughout her artistic life, abstraction remained her single handedly pursued expressive language until 1923. This was despite the fact that she also had certain subsequent representation subjects. In her first exhibition, her work was interpreted as portraying her sexuality (Souter 105). During the year 1923, she confronted this response. She used a relatively tactful response to her audience in trying to direct them away from the misreading of her artistic exhibition. She shifted her attention to recognizable forms’ depiction. It was not until mid-1920s that she finally redefined herself and personality as a representational-level painter. To date, Georgia remains best known today for her outstanding pieces of works with substantial subject matter worth putting to debate. Georgia, found her initial motivation from her love for flowers, bones and architectural unnatural forms. Her artistic designs and drawings borrowed from and drew from such initial interests in the cognitive and environmental phenomenon (Souter 105). Neo-Plasticism: Mondrian Neo- Plasticism as developed by a Dutch painter, Piet Mondrian (1872-1944) refers to a geometrically designed austere of concrete art. In this form of art, Mondrian merely describes his vision of an ideal and pure form of art and design that the circumstances surrounding the post war era demanded. This type of art is a pure abstract art strictly adhering to the rules of composition. This form of art had its basis on fundamental features and or principles such as distinct reliance on the geometric shapes, ignoring natural color and forms. The man elementary compositions were purely straight lines or rectangular shapes and the surfaces had rectangular prisms and planes with neither diagonals nor curves. The colours used must be only the primary colors including red, yellow and blue. A bit of black, white and grey may also blend well. There should be no symmetry in the shapes; rather, the artist ought to tend towards strong asymmetry. Still, in the video, the narrator does not explain to the audience how Mondrian found the idea and developed the art of Neo- Plasticism. He has merely described what the artist did but not from where. However, in the contemporary world, many multinational companies are embracing his artistic idea. For instance, Nokia designed their new model handset, “Nokia Lumia” such that the home screen appears in a Neo- Plasticism manner comprising a perfect geographical mix of primary colors and others. Constructivism: Tatlin (min. 120 words) This video from the Cambridge Architectural Research Ltd tries to explain the idea of artistic constructivism. This was a structural design for a monument planned for building by the Russian government. Its artist and architect, Vladimir Tatlin, saw his work does not pass the planning stage. Its erection was to commence after Bolshevik Revolution of 1917. By description, Constructivism is a learning (epistemology) theory arguing that humans generate their own knowledge and meaning to phenomenon from numerous interactions emanating and revolving between their ideas and experiences. From the architectural design as developed by Tatlin, we learn that the form of design he came up with was most likely attributed to his social interaction and learning.
