Some American subcultures include gays and lesbians, the beats and the teens. Each of these subcultures has its specific values that enhance its identity. This paper will therefore analyze the Monster concerning its representation of American subcultures.

An ideal society is composed of families that are composed of a father, mother, and some children. It is expected that such a society leads a happy and satisfying life. Other subcultures are thought to live a life full of misery. It is normal for members of an ideal society to consider the negativity of such subclasses and generalize them according to moral values.

The film’s representation of gays, lesbians, and prostitutes is not accurate. According to the film, Aileen, a prostitute, is a ruthless serial killer who targets her clients. Aileen not only kills her victims but also steals their money, which she spends to maintain her lavish lifestyle with her partner Selby (Katz). According to the film, prostitutes are ruthless people who never desire a settled life. In addition, prostitutes like to spend their earnings on a lavish lifestyle. This portrayal is true to some extent, but it does not describe the entire population of a prostitute. Being a murderer or serial killer results from a person’s choice, not from prostitution. A person does not need to become a prostitute to become a serial killer.

The film also depicts gays and lesbians as people who prefer an isolated lifestyle. This is untrue since gays and lesbians consider themselves ordinary human beings with extra bodily desires. The existence of a gay bar in Florida portrays gays as people who like being in isolated places away from other people. This is not the actual picture of the gay people since if given a chance they would also wish to go into the usual bars as other people.

According to the movie, gays, lesbians, and prostitutes do not prefer a settled life. The film portrays these subcultures to be made of people who spend their entire life hopping from one bar to another or from one state to the other. However, this is a stereotype some wish to have a settled family life. The barriers placed against them by the society are main reasons why they lead such lifestyles. In the scene where Aileen arrives in Florida, Selby confesses that her parents kicked her out of her home due to her sexual preferences. This indicates that the normal society is responsible for the unsettled lifestyle that such people live.

In conclusion, the lives of prostitutes, gays, and, lesbians as demonstrated in the film the Monster, do not give an absolute representation of their lives.
