Flux and Stability: Mathias Duwel Introduction Mathias Duwel is a famous artist that has had numerous sole and duo Art Exhibition with Achim Moeller in New York, Paris and Berlin among major cities. There are various locations within which his work has been exhibited. This includes the Art Basel, Art Koln among other international art fairs. Currently he is at the Moeller fine Art in Berlin. Mathias Duwel completed his Masters of Fine Arts and received his Meisterschuler from the University der Kuste Berlin in 1983. He also got an award of fellowship from the German Academic Exchange Service. He has numerous paintings from the vast experience he has obtained over the years in painting which carry a lot of significance to the kind of world we are living today. One of his major works include the Enclave #3 . This is a painting using Medium oil on panel. The overall message that this artist tries to put across focuses on consumer consumption (McCracken 34). The world is fast changing and there is an appraisal of the consumer consumption that is undermining the environmental resource base. It is intensifying how human activity is impacting the natural world negatively. As a consumer, there are a variety of products that I have to use for my daily upkeep. I frequently visit the supermarket to get products from different countries for my children. The market for their products and foods is quite enormous. The extent of our consumption, the purpose of extracting the resources and creating the product will have a direct impact on the amount of waste and extent of pollution of the environment. This is a factor that I have ignored for quite a longtime. When I look at Mathias Duwel painting, it gives me a clear understanding of the situation at hand. If this is not corrected, there is a possibility of environmental degradation at the expense of consumer consumption. The paintings of Matthias Duwel and his paper works discover how suburban slump, over-profusion and capitalistic gluttony lead to tragedy. Duwel usually states that his work has been a direct response to his environment. When Duwel moved from New York City to Tucson in the year 2004, he was enlightened to know about developments that took place in the suburban areas and the massive amount of houses that have been repeated in structures. His moving from New York diverted his attention from the deteriorating urban environments and concentrated more on how nature is being destructed by consumers. Duwel mentions that controlling of an environment is only possible when there is stability among people within a particular surrounding. One of Duwel’s paintings has a lot of luminosity and it seems to be in flux state. Some of his paintings seem to be over described and they are actually filled with carefully selected representational images including houses and other items surrounding them such as bottles and cans thrown everywhere. These elements painted in the pictures constitute the lager shapes that fill the picture from one edge to the other edge. These impressive drawings symbolize the tremendous efforts of Mathias Duwel and the way they are toned up with different colours of red, blue, purple, green and orange. All these colors’ represent the different colours of how significant the environment is. Mathias Duwel designed his paintings to provide information and to increase understanding of some of the issues associated with consumer consumption. His paintings aim to help individuals to understand consumer patterns of the environment and ways of how to avoid pollution in the environment. Environmental degradation was one of the things that motivated Duwel to begin his paintings. His painting reveals a great concern on consumerism and its effect of nature. Mathias Duwel believes that consumer consumption is over utilized and that is why he insists on conservation of the environment through his paintings. With regards to consumerism, it is quite clear that the dynamics of consumption- inequality –environment nexus in rising by the day. Should this trend continue, without out any intervention, there will be no redistribution from the high income consumers to the low income ones. This will lead to pollution of cleaner good without promoting good that will help the poor producers. This will force people to unwillingly pollute the environment to meet their daily demands. This is a clear indication that the problem of consumer consumption will definitely worsen. The major issue in this scenario is not consumption but the patterns used and the effects or the aftermath. Arizona painter Mathias Duwel and Pennsylvania artist Matt Eskuche share the same sentiment with regards to consumer consumption. From their artistic work, they have made is distinctively clear that the human activities that are taking place are depleting the valuable resources in the environment. Generally, we consumer must be well aware of how aware action affect the environment. Mathias Duwel’s painting asserts and highlights the vast amount of consumer waste product is generated at the expense of convenience (Dunn 67). It is quite evident that over abundance, sub urban sprawl and capitalist greed will lead to environmental degradation. The effects of this problem are currently being witnessed in Europe as the climate change has led to sub zero temperature causing deaths. Conclusion Mathias Duwel painting conveys an imperative message to audience with regards to consumerism and environmental management. His piece of work is quite dazzling as his theme in the painting provides us consumers with a great humanistic artistic challenge of environmental management. He also subverted the painting to match with the emptiness that validates the core of much contemporary art. When we consume resources today that are beyond our basic needs to help improve efficiency, we are only trying to make life easier. However, we should know how these products are actually produced and the impacts of this kind of production on the environment. The effects of consumerism, negative or positive are very significant to everyone. Consistent with today’s economic system is the wasteful use of capital, resources and labour. Mathias Duwel painting should be regarded as a painting that clearly signifies the magnitude of this problem. Work cited Dunn, Robert G.
