Both from the traditional and the current view of tourism as an activity, both definitions lead to some common principles and facts. From the two definitions that are provided with respect to the actual definition of tourism, the issues that cut across are that the activity mainly involves man, it can be viewed as a nation’s industry, it involves some aspect of interaction and cuts across the macro-environmental factors such as socio-political, economic and physical environments. The former and current views of tourism differ in different dimensions. The reasons behind these different perspectives could be as a result of the changing trends in the tourism industry. It is also as a result of the technological differences that the current view of tourism differs from that of the past. Taking the case of the digital world, people take part in tourism in a number of ways that they seem not to realize. The internet has enabled visiting of places without much physical manifestation. The other impacts that have led to evolution of the tourism industry are related to cultural impacts such as those of the 1970s and 1980s, climate change, and diversification in the distribution of economic determinants among other forces. Despite the relative comparison among these factors, the human element cannot be ignored. These forces per se do not participate in the evolution of the tourism industry. Man has a greater influence. The daily concerns on population control arise due to impacts created by the excess population on the environment. As a result of these population concerns, it is of consideration to come up with possible workable alternatives to mass tourism. This could be based our local surrounding, carrying out tourism awareness among other activities. Journal 2: Based on Topic 4 Human beings shy away from activities that pose harm on them. For instance, terrorism areas are often neglected when it comes to tourism activities. It is due to the benefits obtained from tourism that people keep participating in it. The benefits of tourism are widespread. One category is the socio-cultural impacts that tourism creates on the people that are either passively or actively involved. Moving physically from Egypt to Japan, for example, will create an impact on both the hosts and the tourist. The local traditions at the home country are preserved due to their attractive nature which leads to more foreigners coming in. In addition, cultural exchange takes place between the hosts and the tourists. This, in a way brings about peaceful coexistence and increase pride and self-appreciation among the cultures interacting at any given time. Due to the effects that tourism has on the society, there have been impacts created on the activity as a whole. The rising need for community based-tourism, for example, is geared towards strengthening the links that exist between communities both domestically and internationally. Students often hate it when they pursue their entire academic life within the same geographical locality for certain reasons. We are born with some level of natural curiosity and this can never die in us. This illustration explains the extent of peaceful coexistence in a situation where educational institutions are widespread in a country. The influence of tourism on the world’s peace was realized after the Second World War. Most of the post-war interactions were influential on the degree of creation of peace among the countries that were in conflict. The United State and Russia are good illustrations of this contribution. Both countries mutually benefit from the activity. More has been realized even through the establishment of the International Institution for Peace through Tourism (IIPT). Journal 3: Based on Topic 5 Despite the praises and positivity that is represented through terrorism, there are certain drawbacks that have caused a serious stir in the industry. As opposed to the previous world where tourism created much of cultural values, sex tourism is nearly substituting romantic tourism. Explicit revelations that have been created through tourism have led to elimination of cultural values in the society. Cultural vices such as terrorism have been attributed to social interaction and integration. Terrorists come to various destinations with varying motives, some of which involve malicious intentions of mass destruction and destruction of peace among the destination residents. This has led to some places being abandoned for visitation by potential tourism nations. Other forms of crime have also been boosted through tourism. There are instances where tourists themselves take part just as there are those cases where the foreigners are the main causes. Taking criminal acts of mugging, rape and violent robbery, the victims are most likely to be foreigners. On the other hand, exploitation, irritating cultures, kidnapping and consumption of illegal drugs are criminal acts that are likely to come from the foreigners. Any activity that human beings take part in, in this case tourism, has both positive and negative impacts in the socio-cultural life of man. Despite the negative socio-cultural effects that have been realized out of tourism, the activity has been expanding over the years. National statistics from major tourism destinations reveal an increasing rate in the number of tourists reaching various destinations. In some cases cultural homogenisation arises due to tourism. Modern exposure, especially by developing nations is driven by the urge to know more about other cultures to modernise the existing values. Ironically, their guests are more interested in the traditional cultures and norms. This creates a conflict between the objectives of tourism and the end results that it creates on the individual countries. Journal 4: Based on Topic 6 Terrorism and the environment are constantly in conflict, especially with the rise in population that has been realized. As a result of human encroachment into initially conserved lands with the intention of discovering more facts, the destination areas have suffered the effects of pollution. The pollution comes about from fuel emissions from automobiles, disposure of waste material such as polythene by the touring persons in addition to destruction of natural habitats for creation of amenities. In response to the negative environmental impacts of tourism, a more conservative approach has been developed with the intention of conserving the environment. This involves visiting site and at the same time carrying out environmental conservation plans at the destination places (Honey, 2009, p. 35). This is called ecotourism and mainly seeks to find long-term solutions to the environmental challenges that come as a result of tourism. This form of tourism generates benefits that can be realized from a number of dimensions. For example, the fees charged on visitors can be used to help in the conservation of endangered sectors in any tourism economy. As a result of the tourists’ increased awareness on environmental conservation, it is possible to conserve natural habitats. There are other benefits that are realized out of ecotourism and include watching after other terrorists who may still not be aware or could be negligent of the environmental conservation principles. They are allowed to convict such violators. There are additional influences of ecotourism that come as a result of improved relations created between the tourists and their natural environment. Among these indirect benefits is psychological satisfaction. One would feel more psychologically satisfied upon the accomplishment of taking care of and keeping the environment safe. In the long run, all the concerns that are expressed towards the environment take part in giving tourism a more positive image to the general public. Journal 5: Based on Topic 7 On the overall, the negative impacts that are created due to acts of terrorism dominate, despite the fact that there are elements of ecotourism that have been realized in the destination areas. Land is continuously becoming a scarce economic resource and there is scramble for the efficient allocation of facilities and other amenities used to serve tourists. Roads and other transport routes have been constructed in these regions to provide for efficient movement and communication among the people in the tourism activity. The end result has been the destruction of plants and animals in the regions that are affected by these constructions. In addition, natural habitats have been encroached into due to continuous destruction of the space available on land. There are changes that have been realized in patterns expressed in wildlife patterns over the places that are frequently visited. In response to the destruction that is caused on natural land by the frequent tourism operations, the local communities at the destination areas have expressed disguise by the depletion effects. In response to this, certain measures and restrictions have been put in order to manage the extent to which the destructive activities impact on the immediate lands. There have been public campaigns by such communities to reduce the effects that are created by these operations on natural environment. The international community keeps seeking for more conservative operations in the course of visiting places for adventure.
