Please find below information on two of the most important summer events of London: the Wimbledon Tennis Championships and the Open Air Theatre Regents Park. These events involve in different sectors and aim to help London’s residents and visitors to come close to London’s unique cultural and sports history and identity. Wimbledon Tennis Championships Opening day on Centre Court, Monday 24 June 2013 (source: Wimbledon, Photos, http://www.wimbledon.com/en_GB/interactive/photos/2013.html) The world’s most popular tennis tournament was first established in 1877 (tournament’s website). The specific tournament is highly valued by tennis athletes worldwide. It is held annually between June and July. For 2014 the tournament will take place from 23 June and 6 July. For information in regard to scheduled games and reservations you can visit the tournament’s website: http://www.wimbledon.com London Open Air Theatre Regents Park View of the Open Theatre (source: Open Theatre’s website) The Theatre hosts productions that have been carefully reviewed as of their cultural value and uniqueness. The Theatre has an extensive capacity, of about 1,240 seats. Its atmosphere seems to be the Theatre’s major advantage; having the chance to enjoy a drink with friends being surrounded by trees that are slightly illuminated by the scene’s headlights, is really a lifetime experience. For information on productions and reservations, you can visit the Theatre’s official website: http://openairtheatre.com/ For Immediate Release: Contact: (Student’s Name) Address: 265 Regent’s Street London, W1 4TR Phone: 01733 371363 Website: http://www.mediamatters-pr.co.uk/ Media Matters More PR Agency Celebration of the fourth anniversary of Upstyler.co.uk The fourth anniversary of Upstyler.co.uk will be celebrated through an event that will take place at the Finsbury Hotel, Islington on September 9th 2013. Visitors will have the chance to be informed on the activities of Trekstock, an organization supporting young people who suffer from cancer. The event is expected to last up to 7pm. After the end of the event visitors can leave their feedback, through a questionnaire available in the event’s reception, making their suggestions for future events of similar nature. (Student’s name) Address: 265 Regent’s Street London, W1 4TR Phone: 01733 371363 Jim Mathers, Editor The Time is Now Magazine Dear Mr. Mathers, I’m a loyal reader of your magazine, Time is Now. I have developed an article that I think it could suit perfectly to your magazine. The article is based on the following idea: young people often are not able to participate in activities related to the protection of the environment as they are not sufficiently motivated to do so. The article would present the development of a network through which young people who have never been met will have the chance to discuss, using social media, on values and trends related to the environment. The membership to the network will offer to the new member the potential to participate in activities but also to make their suggestions for future projects and events in regard to the specific field. The network will have a unique characteristic: its activities will be decided through discussions between its members; the discussions will be developed online, as forums, or, alternatively, in places selected by the members, after relevant suggestions. The article would benefit the magazine in different ways. Primarily, the article will refer to similar initiatives in countries worldwide. The magazine could create its own network, a practice that could attract more readers especially from the age 18-30, which represent the high majority of the magazine’s readers. The above practice would also help the magazine to increase loyalty of existing customers. Through the article the magazine will be able to reach new categories of readers. People of over 30 could be interested in joining the magazine’s network and in meeting with people of different social and cultural background. An attractive title, such as ‘Best Friends for Nature’, could contribute in the rapid success of the network among existing and new readers. The magazine covers a variety of themes, responding to all needs of its readers in regard to their personal, social and professional life. Still, the relationship between the magazine and its readers seems to be non-personalized, meaning that readers are not given the chance to share their concerns, a problem that would be resolved through the suggested scheme/ network. Therefore, the article would contribute in the enhancement of communication between the magazine and its readers but also to the increase of the magazine’s popularity in its industry. Looking forward to hearing from you in regard to my idea. Sincerely, (Student’s name) By (student’s name), 15 March 2014 Are you over-socialized? Social media as an addiction Social media is a quite popular tool of communication especially among young people. The benefits of social media, such as the potential to acquire new friends without even leaving home and the ability to exchange views in regard to a series of issues have contributed in the rapid success of social media worldwide. However, the concerns over the use of social media are severe. In practice, it has been used that the over-use of social media can lead users to problems similar to those of addictive substances. Dr. Underwood, a psychologist, refers to the view of her daughter in regard to Twitter for showing the risks of addiction that social media can hide. When asking her daughter what she thinks of Twitter, Dr. Underwood was given the following answer: ‘I can’t stop getting on Twitter’ (Kayleigh 2014). In other words, social media can actually lead to an addiction. The risks of this addiction can be high, especially if considering that the high majority of young people, around 92%, use their real data (name and photos) when communicating with others through social media, as the Pew Research, 2012, showed (Kayleigh 2014). In the article of Ceranic (2013) reference is made to the problem that a young girl, Emma, a student of Perth University faces because of her addiction to social media. Emma admits that she used to check her Facebook account constantly, almost ‘every 20 minutes’ (Ceranic 2013), even when there was no sign of a new message. The story of Emma verifies the findings of a study published by the University of Chicago. According to that study social media can lead to more severe addiction than ‘cigarette or alcohol’ (Ceranic 2013). The study was developed in Würtzburg (Germany) and has been based on the responses of 205 people/ participants (Goessl 2012). Through a device that these people wore the responses to social media, as compared to cigarette and alcohol, were identified. It was proved that social media can result to ;stronger addiction than cigarette and alcohol’ (Goessl 2012). A psychologist in the Perth University notes that there are about 30 – 40 young people, among his customers, who ‘suffer from social media addiction’ (Ceranic 2013). The addictive power of social media has been explored in a study monitored by the Harvard University. The study led to the following result: the addiction that social media causes can be related to the feeling of pleasure that can result from the sharing of personal concerns/ information (Brown 2013). According to Matsalla (2013) social media should be considered not just as a communication tool but also as a habit. This view can be verified if checking the figures referring to the current use of social media: the users of Facebook are about 850 million (Matsalla 2013). Among these users more than half tend to check their Facebook account regularly (Matsalla 2013). In regard to other social media a similar level of use has been reported: within 2012 Twitter reached the 175 million tweets on a daily basis (Matsalla 2013). Porter et al. (2012) developed a study for showing the effects of social media on the behaviour of young people. Through relevant research Porter et al (2012) came to the conclusion that a high percentage of social media users spend a significant amount of time on social media on a daily basis (Porter et al. 2012). The research also revealed that students who tend to check constantly their account in social networking sites are more likely to fail in the tasks assigned them in class (Porter et al. 2012), because of the fact that the continuous engagement to social media makes memory weaker; concentration problems have been also reported for people who are addictive to social media (Porter et al. 2012). According to the above, social media can be an addiction. Still, the steps that need to intervene before reaching this point are many; individuals, and especially young people, need to try to increase their awareness of social media problems and implications. Social media can be used in communication but its use should be aligned with specific terms and ethics. References Brown Lance, 2013. Still, due to the economy downturns the businesses of the particular sector have lost their power to generate profits and to secure their competitiveness. The measures suggested below could help towards the increase of London’s attractiveness as a tourism destination. The measures suggested could be developed simultaneously or gradually, depending on the market conditions: Decrease of travel fares across UK. Existing fares in London Public Transportation system can be characterized as quite high. This fact discourages people from visiting London thinking of the high economic needs of their travel. Elimination of fares in London’s museums and other areas of cultural interest. The fares for all culture-related sites of London should be eliminated. Fares in such places have been already decreased but they should be fully removed in order for the competitiveness of London, towards other cities that are highly attractive as tourism destinations, to be secured. Increase of the budget available for the promotion of London worldwide; the existing schemes for promoting London as a tourism destination are quite limited, almost non-existent. In this way, it will be quite difficult for London to compete other cities that highly invest on their promotion in the international market. Benefits from Olympics should be retained; the memories from Olympics of 2012 in London should be kept alive through events/ publications. The infrastructure developed for responding to the needs of the Olympics could be used in hosting other athletic events, so that the potentials of London as an athletic centre are highlighted. Emphasis should be given to the image of London not only as a tourism destination but also as a centre of commerce and a centre of quality education; in other words, different aspects of London’s potentials as a powerful city should be highlighted. The city’s existing infrastructure should be improved; particular attention should be paid at the transportation system which would be updated. The city’s existing problems should be faced with no delay; reference is made to the extensive damages caused because of excessive rainfalls during the last two months. The travel offers available to travelers should be reviewed; prices could be lowered, especially in regard to accommodation. At their current status, prices for travelling in London are rather high if taking into consideration the economic turbulences in most markets internationally. The quality of services provided to London’s visitors should be reviewed. Concerns have been stated in regard to accommodation failures and problems that tend to appear in London during periods of high-peak; Problems that travelers are likely to face when visiting London should be addressed; for example, continuous phenomena of luggage lost in airports or non-authorized taxis would be faced by London authorities in cooperation with the community/ local employees. London’s Mayor Office Shopping Malls: A unique feature of London. A Review Brent Cross Westfield (photos from http://www.timeout.com/london/shopping/the-ten-best-london-shopping-centres) Shopping malls are considered as one of the most important features of London, as a tourism destination. London’s shopping malls are distinguished not just because of their structural characteristics but also of their aesthetics and their technology, see Westfield and Brent Cross. Shopping malls have the following advantage: people can visit them no matter the weather conditions. For London, where rain is common during all year, the existence of shopping malls has resolved one of the City’s major problems: London’s visitors can make their shopping and have fun, in the malls’ recreational areas, without being exposed to heavy rain or wind. This fact offers to visitors a positive shopping experience that will remain in their memory each time they have to decide their travel destination. In 2010 London acquired a Shopping mall of unique characteristics: it is the One New Change shopping mall has been established in City and addresses the needs of businessmen for work and entertainment. The specific mall includes both work spaces (offices) and recreational areas. The opening of the Westfield Stratford City in East London highly enhanced the image of London as a top shopping destination in the global market. The above shopping centre has been based on a quite high investment, about £1,45 million (O’ Ceallaigh 2011). Shopping malls, as a feature of London, can be a unique tool in promoting the City worldwide; actually, there are quite few cities worldwide that can compete London in regard to the number and quality of its shopping malls. Visitors who have not much time available for exploring London or those who wish to live a unique shopping experience can visit one of London’s shopping malls. London’s Shopping malls are complex buildings, usually with 3-5 floors and facilities for covering all needs of their visitors; parking areas are available to visitors along with banking facilities for covering emerging needs for cash.
