GAME 2, QUESTION 2 ANSWER: The two main categories in the game which could be seen are 1. Agon (competitive) – Agon because the opponents here are from a different race, terrorists groups , or simply what the plot calls the enemy. In this case, the enemy are Russian terrorists so there is the element to beat the operations of the group through military strategy and tactical operations. 2. Mimicry. Mimicry because one is immersed in a situation where he plays the role of “Soap”, a commando who must race against time and to complete the missions set before him. The player is assuming the role of a soldier who must act under pressure in a hostile environment. B) The reward of glory and sustenance is being used the creators of the game. The reward of sustenance since the player must be able to survive the battles with diminishing resources such as ammunition and health. If he makes it to a battle and conquers enemy lines, he can get the resources needed. Glory is also being used a s a reward here since the player is being conditioned that what he is doing has effect on history . It is almost to the point of believing that the mission is critical in changing the tides of war. GAME 1, QUESTION 2 ANSWER: A) The narrative is evoked and enacted. Evoked because this series is the sixth series already where fans all over the world know the plot and history of the characters. There are issues of betrayal, courage and loyalty which is woven in to the story. It is an enacted narrative because the play has cut scenes which are really artistic in the sense that the visuals are compelling ( i.e. satellite feed of Afghanistan or Iraq) which makes the players enter the world of clandestine operations. The cut-scenes also show some historical insights and can be considered as realistic as the events around the world. B) Game mechanics: Space – There is a lot of space that the player can explore in his environment including every nook and cranny of a room or a jungle.’ The player controls his environment and feels free to roam around and explore. Time – The feels like real time since there is time pressure to beat in some of the operations involved. Moreover, the player can also be given a task that he should complete in a certain time frame for a mission to succeed. Examples of which are planting or detonating bombs and standing ground until help comes along. Structure –The game can be played both as single or multi-player. Amount of Control in Environment – The player cannot save his progress unless he reaches a checkpoint or accomplish a mission. This has effect on player’s behaviour because he must possess dogged determination to repeat a mission in case he fails by getting killed in action or not beating the time. GAME 1, QUESTION 3 ANSWER: The three skills being developed here are : 1. Understanding complex systems – the player is bombarded with a barrage of information on the status of operations while under heavy fire. This develops skills in focus, listening, and absorbing information from a variety of sources at a given time. 2. Creating strategies – Winning a battle in war involves creating strategies so a player is required to plan before attacking a stronghold. Because of this, one plans carefully so as not to endanger the whole military operations. 3. Quick decision making abilities – In order to survive, the player must know exactly how to react in a given situation. He does not rush headlong into enemy lines without a plan and when he is cornered, he must react accordingly. Some part o f the missions are clandestine so judgment is often needed in situations. Wrong move could lead to mission failure. GAME 1, QUESTION 4 ANSWER: A) The four player types: 1. The conqueror – This type of player would be the heroic commando who would be the first one to open-fire as soon as he sees the enemy. This palyer would be cold and ruthless in killing people so as to achieve the mission. 2. The manager – the manager is the thinking type who would study his opponent’s weakness. As mentioned, war involves strategy. This type of player would seriously consider the type of ammunition he needs to bring and the type of attack he would launch. He can tolerate failure so as to learn the rudiments and later make a master plan to emerge victorious. 3. The wanderer –The wanderer is a game player that joins the mission and when he plays with his team members he is a good follower. He could be not so cautious and try to see what the game has to offer for him. 4. Participant – The participant plays the game to collaborate with other team members. He is willing to participate actively and get involved by performing a task given by team mates. B) The four motivations that were used by the creators of this game are: 1. Fantasy – The gamer could be male or female but that doesn’t matter in this game as long as you assume the role of Soap. Fans of this series love this game because it provides a stimulating environment so unlike real life where there is routine. Anything can happen in this environment and that includes carrying out violent action. 2. Excitement – The game is exciting because one competes with another person and challenges the skills that a player has. There is a test of skills that should be executed precisely by dealing the right blow lest you miss the chance to kill the opponent. 3. Reward is one good motivation here and that reward is glory. Glory because the player feels that he has altered the course of history by assassinating a bad guy that contributes to mankind. The reward is feeling good and contributing something meaningful to one’s country. 4. Challenge – as the game moves toward the end, the plot becomes complicated thereby making the environment more hostile. The gamers are addicted in repeating the game since they need to master the mission by perhaps increasing speed in accomplishing a task or killing more people. GAME 1, QUESTION 5 ANSWER: 1) Violence in this game is presented in a serious manner since killing an opponent would seem to save the world from bad guys. The realism is a representation soldiers and there is this emotional factor involved when people are killed by execution by the antagonist. The realistic side of being a commando and killing people increases the degree of violence here. In addition, the involvement is first-person shooter all the more adding gore to the bloody turn of events. Shooting people in fps is graphic because the involvement is very close. The details of brain and body parts are viewed well especially with the good visuals provided by the game. Violence here is justified since war involves ruthless acts. The motivation is well justified to establish how wars are brutal and must be avoided if possible. But then, there are times that evil must be stopped by committing violent acts too. The two main categories in the game which could be seen are : Agon (competitive) and Mimicry. Agon is apparent because it a martial arts competition done in the streets which is almost tantamount to who is a better bully ( or fighter?). Mimicry is a category because the player must assume a character such as Makoto , Dudley or any given character that the game offers. The player becomes the character himself as he tries to gain mastery of the skills in street fighting. Each character has his own unique personality and fighting skills. B) It is apparent that glory is one of the rewards being used by the game developer in StreetFighter since the character must compete and win against opponents so he could be on top of the list of fighters who have to deal with big boss on the higher levels. The glory is being famous for toppling all the records held by the other fighters. Another reward being used is access. Access in this game meant gaining reputation or better standing in the top fighters in the list. The winner who tops the list is the one who has knocked out the most number of opponents. GAME 1, QUESTION 2 ANSWER: A) The narrative is evoked and enacted. The game fighter series plot is basically the same with all the characters fighting for supremacy and ranking. There is not much narrative really but just a series of fights. It is enacted because it has 2D cut-scenes but the characters are actually created in 3D. The cut-scenes are quite short and just act like a teaser. Also, a sub-culture is created as each player represents diverse race. Player may root for the characters they can usually identify with. B) Game mechanics: Space – Street fighter has limited space because the player has to move only in frame where the actual fight is happening. It could be on the street, in Chinatown, or just about anywhere but fighters can not explore their environment. Time – The game isn’t real time since it just can be played as you wish. However, there are modes of competition that sets a certain time to beat so the player must be able to win the fight. Structure – Obviously, there are only two characters at a time that can compete in this game. Player can also choose solo and have an AI ( artificial intelligence) as an opponent. Amount of Control in Environment – In the latest edition of street fighter, some moves have been added to make the fight scenes more exciting. Combos were modified but players can still use the old styles plus GAME 1, QUESTION 3 ANSWER: The three skills being developed here are : 4. Learning the rules of a system – there is a given rule ( written or unwritten ) during the match that must be respected by the players. 5. Creating strategies – a player has to learn what are the strengths and weaknesses of a certain opponent in case he has to fight with him. Not knowing your enemy’s stance or fighting skills would cause defeat. 6. Quick decision making abilities – the player must react almost without taking which is a learned skill ( some call this intuition). The fight is quick so the player must be able to react to a given situation lest he gets mortally wounded and lose the fight. GAME 1, QUESTION 4 ANSWER: C) The four player types: 5. The conqueror – This is definitely the type that could be said a Type A in gaming. This type of player would try to win every match since it adds up to his ego and proves that he has the skills in this type of match. 6. The manager – the manager is the thinking type who would study his opponents weakness. He would assess the opponent and plan for the perfect chance to deal with a deadly blow. 7. The wanderer – This is the cool type who would just get into the game to relieve boredom from a lazy afternoon. The would play but count on luck for the outcome of the game. This player is not so keen on winning but by immersing himself in the tournament. 8. Participant – The participant plays the game to learn from other good players their styles and techniques. D) The four motivations that were used by the creators of this game are: 5. Fantasy – players enter a surreal world where they can choose who they want to be from an array of seventeen characters. This game also breaks gender stereotypes since female street fighters are equally brutal and ruthless as male opponents. Females can compete with males in the tournament. 6. Excitement – The game is exciting because one competes with another person and challenges the skills that a player has. There is a test of skills that should be executed precisely by dealing the right blow lest you miss the chance to kill the opponent. 7. Reward is one good motivation here and that reward is glory. Good street fighters can brag about their success and challenge other players to match their skill. The game is highly competitive which ios actually its main structure. GAME 1, QUESTION 5 ANSWER: A) In this game, the characters are human representations with extra powers that have the ability to commit violent actions as seen in the game play. They are fighters in the first place in a tournament. As for the involvement, it is third-person perspective and is not as violent as it seems compared to first-person shooter games. The motivation for violence is justifiable since players expect to knock-out opponents to win this game. Certain actions like special attacks require violence which increases the degree of violence in this game even though it is played in a third person perspective. Read More
