The advent of numerous social networking sites such as “twitter”, “Google plus”, “Facebook”, “MySpace” or “LinkedIn” have consequently resulted in making social networking an integral part of a person from the young generation. In most circumstances, a young person who has registered with a social network, and has an account, will update his or her status at least 5 times a day. On the other hand, a young person will constantly check for status updates made by his or her friends (Blake et al 56).

The second way that the young generation is dependent on technology is by studying. The internet as a technology provides student with online learning materials such as virtual books and journal articles in the form of PDF, EBooks and video or audio tutorials. The young generation does not need to walk physically into a bookstore or a school library, for them to get access on reading materials. Essentially, while online, the young generation, can comfortably visit a website that is hosted by a book-publishing company or an online library.

On those websites, they are likely to find the book of their choice, which they can subscribe for a defined period without buying the whole package. Additionally, websites such as “Google Books” and “Google Scholar” come in handy when online researching is mentioned. The young generation would prefer online and digital materials since they can fast and easy access these materials with the help of their laptops and smart phones. Technology, through online learning, also provides the young generation with the opportunity of blogging.

Here, there are panels that students can discuss with other students from different learning institutions around the globe. Since the young generation largely depends on technology for communication, it is even likely that they will further their learning process through technology (Salkowitz 46). Another important way, which the young generation depend on technology, is through entertainment. In the opinion of the young generation, the type of technology that is exhibited by a form of entertainment defines its nature in terms of being boring or interesting.

The young generation will often kill their boredom or spend their free time on the internet, which provides access to the latest music, videos and movies. The dependence on technology by the young generation for entertainment purposes is also seen through their engagement in video games. Thanks to technology, video games that imitate various physical activities have been developed. It is crucial to note that video games provide the young generation with platforms, which they can engage themselves psychologically in various activities without participating in a real physical environment.

This clearly demonstrates how the young generation is dependent on technology (O'Loughlin 23).Lastly, a different way that demonstrates how the young generation is dependent on technology is their actual attachment to electrical devices. The young generation would prefer spending most of their time with technological devices, instead of being part of a family get together or gathering. This is true because they feel that they are in full control of their lives while engaging in technological activities compared to being part of a family gathering (O'Loughlin 35).
