Technology has influenced every aspect of our lives. This ranges from school, work and homes. Tasks that were previously performed using hands are now easily carried out using the help of machines and this has made our lives very easy.Take for example, the case of communication. Traditionally, people relied on mails sent via postal services which would take days for the message to be relayed. Today however, there a wide array of modern form of communication ranging from electronic mails, text messages, mobile phones, and social media networks which has made it possible to get immediate feedback.

It is now possible to send and receive messages over many miles within seconds; something that would have taken a very long time before the onset of the modern day developments in communication technology. All these have greatly transformed people’s lives and it is unimaginable living in a world where all these form of technology do not exist (Graham, 2001). This shows without a doubt that people have become overly dependent on modern technology. The priorities that people take in life have also been shaped by technology.

In the contemporary world, people are labeled according to the kind of gadget or machine that they own. This has made human being very materialistic to the extent that they fancy their cars more than they fancy important people in their lives such as relatives or even friends. Looking on the roads today, you will observe that they are full of different fancy car models leaving no space for pedestrians to walk. This is despite the ongoing campaign of reducing the number of cars on the road as a way of conserving the environment.

The huge numbers of cars on the road increase the emissions of gases that are responsible for the increase in global temperatures whose detrimental effects are being felt today. Having too many cars on the road also increases the fuel oil consumption which is threatening to exhaustion the existing oil reserves. If the oil reserves are completely exhausted, then the world economy is bound to crash since everything depends on oil as the machines that run almost everything requires oil at some point.

Despite all these facts being clear to people, they still want to own cars (Winston & Edelbach 2012). Those without cars are striving very hard to get one while those who already have are seeking to get better models which consume more oil. Moreover, rarely do people walk from one place to another even though it may be a short distance. Taking the stairs is seen as old fashioned and people have to take the lift even when moving from adjacent floors. This example shows without doubt that technology controls the people.

Another example that demonstrates how people have become dependent on technology is the dependency on the calculator. Today, you find calculators in almost all gadgets that we have including the phones, computers and even watches. As a result of being used to using the calculator, people find it hard to solve simple mathematics problems and always have to use the application. Even when people need to do some simple calculations, all they do is press the buttons (Graham 2001). The calculator itself is important since it is accurate and fast.

However, by relying on it, people are slowly killing their calculation skills. We all know that when brain functions become dormant, they become rusty over time. Failure to use this brain function will lead to it being completely lost and people may have problems making calculations with the absence of the calculator. An additional obvious evidence of how people have become overly dependent on the internet is the use of the Google search engine. Google provides information on all topics subjects and disciplines.

Moreover, it contains opinions that different people may have on different issues. We are finding a trend where people are switching from using books to gather information and are relying more on Google. It is easier to just type a query and get
