Australian Sociology Name Professor Institution Course Date Advantages and disadvantages of people living longer lives Societies with people who stay or live long lives are faced with both advantages and disadvantages. Across the world, person's longevity has been found to vary depending on several factors like the food they eat, activities they do, their beliefs and many other factors. In the past, it was found that people live longer and their lifestyle was not as complex as the current persona. This has impacted the society both positively and negatively (Holstein et al 2011 pg. 71).It is the positive impacts on society which older people bring that has maintained some practices from being eliminated the old values tradition which the current generation do not mind and does not care about them. The old has helped them to learn what was practiced in the past and understand the relevance of maintaining them. These are people with a lot of experience in life and the young generation can learn from them. The inexperienced people have been known to be doing things which they may not understand, when they require any form of help regarding the matter, the older people are there to assist.Success of young human beings or the current generation hugely depends on doing the right things. When they acquire help and advices to follow from the older, they are destined for success in life. They are more likely to avoid trouble when they take advice from experienced people and live comfortably in the society (Plotnik & Kouyoumdjian 2008 pg. 33). In cases where some people disagree on certain things, they help them to solve things amicably without necessarily involving the law. It is found out that in the workplace, most managers prefer older and experience workers as compared to the young and untried persons. This brings the much needed experience and ensure the young people aspiring to reach their heights work extra harder to work with them, making sure that society gets the best from employees (Plotnik & Kouyoumdjian 2008 pg. 33). These people who live longer also bring some disadvantages to the society. When they are very old, their productivity goes down and in one or the other they becomes a burden to the society. They are unable to do anything and they just wait for what is provided for them. Their contribution significantly diminishes and they wait for them to be provided (Morgan et al 2011 pg. 68). The cost to take care or to maintain older people is much higher, therefore becomes a burden to maintain them. The older people in the society tend to fall sick frequently. This cost the society funds to treat them that could have been spent on other development projects, increasing the cost. Aging people in the society are less fertile and therefore reduces the number of people in the society. This affects the community immensely in terms of labour and other factors (Morgan et al 2011 pg. 68). Women participation in criminal justice This is an activity that has been largely dominated by men over long time. Recently, women have greatly involved themselves in this criminal justice as they attempt to protect their rights. Initially, they depended on men to defend and protect them, but they realized that they suffered much while depending on them. They are the major victims of these crimes and their participation is mainly driven by the need to protect themselves (Williams 2004 pg. 6).In the past, most communities regarded girl child education as unnecessary and not important like that of a boy child. This made the women to stay in darkness for a long time as they did not understand their rights, and they were used as subordinates for the man (Williams 2004 pg. 6). Their rapid development in education sectors and understanding of their rights has made them to be in front to defend themselves from more humiliation and a refusal to be considered a man’s helper. They can now help themselves since they understand the rule of law. Development of various women's group organization has also aided this. These are unions which brings together women from diverse background in the society and all under this union share the same thoughts and learn what they need to do to live harmoniously. Most of them start defending their rights as they all share a common feeling (Williams 2004 pg. 6). These are unions which are spread all over the world, and with them sharing common ideologies, they normally do whatever it takes to protect their rights.Increase of domestic violence has risen significantly increased unlike in the past. Problems were solved procedurally unlike in the past, stimulating the need for more protection. There has been a rise in conflicts domestically, and it is found that women are the ones on the receiving end of this, making the need for them to resist this. Women in these systems are also driven by poverty. They have suffered for long spells under poverty, involving them to fight against poverty (Krikos & Ingold 2004 pg. 349). Those who had suffered physically and mental problems are also actively involved in this. Women have undergone much depression which has forced them to fight for their rights. People who live longer also have helped the society immensely, and they have helped the society immensely. It has been through them that some traditions of the past are still practiced (Krikos & Ingold 2004 pg. 349). They have helped in maintaining them, though they have affected the community negatively, their contribution cannot be looked beyond. Dramatic Rise of Women’s Participation in Criminal Justice Systems In the recent past, it has become evident that women have been on the rise when it comes to the participation in criminal justice. This is the case due to several factors that are affecting this situation either directly or indirectly. For example around the world there has been a rise in the empowerment of women since most of the people felt that this group has been marginalized for a long time. Women normally, are a weaker species and need extra care since they are vulnerable to things such violence. Women due to this program have been enlightened and given the confidence that they can perform just like men or even better. Education for women in Australia has been on the rise comparing the percentages of the past and those of the recent times. This affects both the small children in primary and secondary level and even those in the colleges. Women have also realized that they can pursue courses that in the past were for men only. Criminal justice is one of them, due to this factor women are increasing in this field.Feminism and equality is a major factor that has contributed much to this situation especially in Australia. This is brought about by the fact that the world has educated the women on their rights and the space they demand in the society. They expected to be treated as equal as men. This has contributed to the equal opportunities in the job market in the recent past. In most countries, women are given a percentage of the total jobs. By doing this the women find themselves in such systems in a good number. The Mass in Mass Media The mass media is an information technology system that has been there for a very long time. This organization of presenters and broadcasters majorly aim at making the news public to each and everyone. Their main purpose is to serve the public who majorly expect to receive news, entertainment, informative programs, new ideas and many more. Ideally the ‘mass’ in the ‘mass media’ is the public at large. This is because they are the target group for this system of information. The mass media in Australia aims at satisfying the mass who are the people of the nation. They usually make their programs known to each and every one of them without discrimination. These systems are common and known to many of the people. They include televisions, radios, newspapers, magazines and many more. They are educative to any person who listens to them or reads them. The mass media can also be specific to a person since they have categories for their news and programs. The ‘mass’ was there before the ‘mass media’. The ‘mass media’ is a product of the ‘mass’, this can be explained further by the expectations and the services offered by this two groups. Some time back in Australia, the mass lacked information and an organized group that they can trust in the delivery of the news. This is the reason as to why the mass media came up in order to serve the public. The media as said before is an important tool in the educating and informing of the public as a whole. Effects of Urbanization on the Environment Urbanization is one of the most significant threats to the environment today. This is majorly due to the fact that it involves the development of land in the towns and cities of a country. Urbanization majorly has adverse effects especially to the environment. The environment requires extreme care which it does not receive in this situation. In most cases this situation leads to deforestation. The environment is made up of such things as trees which need to be conserved which in turn conserve the environment. Deforestation affects the environment in many ways, for example trees are responsible for the purification of the air. They also play a major role in the rainfall pattern of a place Holmes, Hughes and Julian(2011). Deforestation can lead to desertification which is also a major problem in the environment of Australia today. In a recent research conducted in Australia, it is evident that urbanization is the major contributor to pollution in most of the cities and towns. Pollution is a general term to mean the depilation of something. This is for instance in the pollution of air, noise pollution and even water pollution. This situation in Australia and many parts of the world has lead to global warming. Global warming is a condition brought about by the change of temperature in the atmosphere. There are several industries in urban areas which emit poisonous gases to the environment. These gases in most cases consist of carbon compounds which are the major cause for the depletion o f the o-zone layer leading to the green house effect. Reducing the Obesity in Children and Adults Among the most common health problems experienced in the population of Australia, obesity is ranked very high. This is because of the rising rates of this condition. There are several causes that lead to the occurrence of this condition among the people. When trying to reduce these rates, it is first important to ensure that the causes have been identified. For instance, in the case where genetics is the cause of obesity, nothing much can be done except the modification of diets for this people. Exercise should also be employed in order to help them burn their calories. They should also be given nutrition education. This can be done in categories of management and even the causes. Management of this condition is an intervention in the reduction of the high rates experienced recently in Australia. There are some who get the condition in adulthood while some get it in childhood. Both of these groups can be managed well if the diets are looked into. Fast foods should be generally avoided since they contain a lot of unhealthy fats and even empty calories, in children, they should be advised on the intake of junk food. This category of food is not healthy for them. Frequent check-ups is also an intervention for both groups. They should visit a nutritionist on a regular basis in order to get their weights checked. This involves weight for height or weight for age for children and BMI for adults. The approaches used in these two groups should be different. Although in some cases there are some which are alike, in most cases they should be chosen differently. For example in children, they should not be exposed for strenuous exercises. The diet modifications for these groups are also quite different. Impact of Globalization on Australian Sovereignty Before embarking of the explication as to whether or not Australia has lost sovereignty following globalization, it is imperative to seek to understand what is meant by sovereignty. While many scholars have defined the concept of sovereignty differently, all definitions point to the same defining factors. According to the average definition, sovereignty refers to independence in terms of governance. It is critical to note that there is a connection between globalization and sovereignty Holmes, Hughes and Julian(2011). Globalization, a concept that sees the political and economic structures of the world integrated. Such integration can compromise the sovereignty of a country. Another way through which the sovereignty of a country can be compromised is through the establishment of strong trading and regional blocks whose decisions are binding on all member states. Speaking of Australia, it is quite obvious that the country’s sovereignty is still steady and has not been affected by globalization to a great extent. Commonwealth countries, especially the developed western countries like Australia have not been affected adversely since the main impact that globalization has had on them is the huge influx of immigrants. Such immigrants have not affected the sovereignty of the nation in any way since most of them become citizens. By definition domestic sovereignty is associated with the capacity to exercise control over the citizenry by some authority, which comes to power through the decision of the majority of the citizenry (Goodman, James 2002).To this extent, Australia has not lost its domestic sovereignty. However, the country has lost regional sovereignty to a significant extent. Regional sovereignty refers to the extent to which a country exercises control over a region, and how such a country influences the decisions of others. With globalization, regional blocks have become the powerhouses of various regions as far as decision making is concerned.
