Community Oriented Policing Services: Bullying in Schools No: Community Oriented Policing Services: Bullying in Schools Bullying is the act in which a person or a group attacks a person psychologically, physically, or verbally. Sexual harassment also comes in the category of bullying. Bulling in schools is the common among all types and categories of schools, while location of the school does not play any role in minimizing the school bullying. Bullying also includes the name calling, spreading of rumors, damaging property and valuables and destroying the other work. However, the illegal behaviors that come in the category of bullying are sexual harassment which involves the physical contact, etc, discrimination, regarding the different orientation and hazing that involves the imposition of embarrassing rituals on the junior school players by the high school athletes. The problems related to the bullying at schools may include the bulling of students by other fellow students including taunting, name calling, etc. On the other hand the bullying of the teachers by students may be included the in the bullying in the schools. In order to minimize the problems of the bullying, every pillar of the society may contribute to make a clear reduction in the problem. Schools, parents, teachers, law enforcement firms and justice systems may contribute in minimizing the acts of bullying. Schools have the responsibility to work responsibly and respond to any quarry regarding the bullying. However, precautions can be made by school authorities to avoid bullying (Insidemedford.Com, 2010). On the other hand, parents can help in minimizing the bullying. Parents can have an eye on the actions and behavior of the children. Police associated with maintaining the discipline in schools. Punishing a bully child may prevent bullying from spreading. On the other hand making strategies before it become a problem, is much better to cure the problem after it intensifies. In this paper, I will discuss what strategies police can employ to minimize the bullying in schools. The involvement of the police in the school bullying can never be neglected. The combined efforts can minimize the act of bullying. A perfect example of the involvement of the police in minimizing the act of school bullying was seen in 1991, where Lothian and borders police worked with the school and produced a pack to discourage the school bullying. A similar strategy can also be employed in the school where more incidents of the school bullying are reported. Police will help the school management to inspect the reason and incidents of the school bullying. If it is found that the offenders are involved in the act of harsh bullying, a report shall be sent to the children’s hearing (Gov.uk, 2012). However, there is set age restriction of this method. The reporter will then judge if the act would be negligible or shall be heard and file the case. The welfare of the students shall be the major priority of the reporter. However, it is simple method to stop the bullying at school; some other methods may be employed associating the police and schools. Sometimes a hearing will be called to discuss the welfare of a victim of bullying. While at interview with Mustang News Lt. Covino of Medford police has the view that any action of the bullying is seen in the school he student must immediately rush to the authorities and give then complete information of the bullying act. The reporting student must take the first step of the bullying seriously and give information to the school authorizes, if the acts prolongs, the bully get encouraged and continue the harsh behavior. By the passage of time the behavior gets harsher and thus it is important to control the bully at an early stage. On the other hand, the school authorizes must take the information seriously and respond to the bullying quarry (Insidemedford.com, 2012). On the other hand, the involvement of the police should only be allowed in some particular cases where the assistance of the police is required. Unnecessary involvement of the police in the school affaire will disable the school discipline and controlling body (Insidemedford.Com, 2010). Bullying can only be considered as the criminal act, if the bully harasses the person and physically damages the belongings or the harms the person physically. The police intervention will only be allowed in the particular criminal cases; where instead of normal procedures, particular methods should be employed (Police.Nsw.Gov.Au, 2012). The intervention of the police in the school matters depends on the social environment. In some societies and culture, the interference of the police in the school matter is considered wrong. Special strategies should be used by the police to minimize the bullying outside the premises of the school. Police sergeants visiting the schools and informing the students about the bullying and how to avoid and treat the bully, will solve much of the problem. The important perspective is that the police can interfere in the school matters in case of any harsh incident. The type of bullying like the name calling, spreading rumors about a person cannot be so appealing that the police interfere. These matters should only be solved by understanding the behavior of the students that are involved in the bullying. On the other hand, police can inform the parents of the bully student and ask the parents regularly if the child is altering the behavior or not. The bullying on the school forums and on the internet can be considered as the uncontrollable, as it is difficult to evaluate the source. However, it is advised to the parents to keep an eye on the activities of their children on the internet and block all the irrelevant data entering the computer through the internet. In schools, the teachers and the staff should have to develop a system that no student can open a discussion forum (Insidemedford.Com, 2010). If the students are allowed to utilize the internet facility, it should be ensured that they should remain stick to the designated work. If a teacher or attendant finds a student involved in the internet bullying, he should inform the school authorizes immediately. Police may be called to restrict the child from stepping out of the home the student should be home poisoned for two or three days (Sampson, 2012). Home pinioning a student for two or three days without the facility of the internet or other communication will be enough punishment for the student that is spreading the rumors about another student. A bill regarding the bullying was presented in the House of Representatives and the House of the Representative passed the bill. The bill is under discussion in the Senate. If the bill regarding the bullying is passed by the Senate, then Governor will sign the bill. The bill was designed to secure the rights of the students. The bill fully covers the cases with particular situations and it will provide the school a complete guidance, how to handle the circumstances that involve the bullying (Sampson, 2012). On the other hand the bill will help the police and the schools to generate policies about the bullying and ensure that the policies have the positive impact on the students and the environment of the schools. The policies will guide the police to categorize the bullying and act according to the certain category. On the other hand, it will be better to handle the bullying categorically, as it will determine whether the student committed crime or not. Bullying is common in the majority of the schools worldwide and thus it should be minimized, as it largely impacts the personality of the students. The personality of the bully student is also impacted, as it provides a way to the bully student towards a bigger crime. School authorities, teachers, parents and police should make the combined strategies to minimize or limit the bullying. Students should be encouraged to inform about any harsh act to the parents and the teachers. Parent should talk to the children about the bullying on regular basis.
