Download file to see previous pages The task to implement measures to ensure equal opportunity between women and men in the hospitality workplace now falls unto the shoulders of the employers. In this paper, I would like to present the problems that affect the advancement of women in the workplace and offer some strategies as to how employers can help women break the “glass ceiling”.
Some of the most common problems faced by women in the hospitality workplace vertical segregation, horizontal segregation, stereotyping, career interruptions, discrimination and the lack of access to networks (R. M. Blackburn, J. Browne, and B. Brooks (2002). Of these many problems faced by women workers, occupation segregation is considered as one of the primary problems that women have to face (R.M. Blackburn and B. Brooks (2001). There many artificial barriers that prevent women from rising into the managerial level in organizations. These artificial barriers create the glass ceiling phenomenon where an invisible barrier divides the male and the female workers, making it more difficult for women to advance at the same rate as their male counterparts (Knutson, Bonnie J. & Schmidgall, Raymond S. (1999). In most cases, when the choices are between promoting a man and woman to a higher position, the two having the same qualifications and have rendered the same length of service to the company, the company tends to choose the man over the woman.
Aside from vertical segregation, horizontal segregation can also be observed in the workplace. There are companies that encourage women to work of jobs that are stereotyped as “feminine” type of work (Knutson, B.J., Schmidgall, R.S., and Cichy, R.F. (2002). By limiting the access of women to jobs that are considered as “feminine” many employers actually limit the potentials for the advancement of the female workers.
