Sociology Response 13: Sociology in Aging The first notable aspect of Jose Gomez’s paper is that he is using the Modern Language Association MLA format. He has also used in-text references which is an excellent way of showing the source of his ideas. However, I believe that he might have forgotten to include the full bibliographic information at the end of the paper. The answers to each question in the paper are also well-organized and aside from a few grammatical errors, there is proper organization.

In his discussion, Gomez writes that it is not surprising to note that most of the aged in nursing and home facilities are physically and verbally abused. I agree with him on this point because once a person becomes very old, they are not capable defending themselves physically. Nonetheless, I think the best way to avoid such problems would be to have the family members of the elderly person taking care of him or her at home. The other alternative would be to hire a professional nurse to take care of the aged while at home, but under close supervision to avoid abuse.

In Samantha Gutierrez’s paper, the first thing I noted was that her format was different from Gomez’s format. She has used the American Psychological Association APA format. In addition she has used in-text references and provided the full bibliographic information at the end of the paper. The questions and answers are also well-organized. In her discussion, she says that the only obstacle when it comes to the elderly being taken in assisted living facilities is that they do not get the 24 hour skilled care.

I agree with Gutierrez, because it is due to such minor errors that make it harder for care providers in these facilities to detect when the aging person is ill resulting to spread of diseases. As noted by Harris (2007) the aging population is prone to many illnesses because of their weakened immune systems.
