Career in Human Services By Career in Human Services Community Health Workers According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, the following the following are the main tasks of community health workers. Provide outreach and discuss health care concerns with community members, educate people about the importance and availability of healthcare services, such as cancer screenings, collect data, deport findings to health educators and other healthcare providers, provide informal counselling and social support, conduct outreach programs, ensure that people have access to the healthcare services they need, and advocate for individual and community needs. A career in community health work is a human service career because it involves dealing with people directly and helping them on health matters. The minimum academic requirement of a career in community health work is a High School Diploma and some training on community health work. The population that this career works with are all the members of the public. The average salary of this career is $41, 830 per year. The main potential challenge in this career is working with people of different cultures and different backgrounds; on the other hand, the main reward of this career is that it is a career that does not require a lot of academic qualifications (Explore Health Career.org. Web). Employment in community health work is expected to grow by 21% from 2012 to 2022. I don’t see myself going into this career because I do not like working in any career related to health. Mental Health Counsellors and Marriage and Family Therapists The following are the primary tasks for this career: diagnose and treat mental disorders such as depression, encourage their clients to discuss their emotions and experiences, help clients to process their reactions and adjust to changes in their life, such as divorce and layoffs, and guide clients through the process of making decisions about their future; also tasks in mental health counselling and marriage and family therapy involve helping clients develop strategies and skills to change their behaviour and to cope with difficult situations, coordinate treatment with other professionals, such as psychiatrists and social workers, and refer clients to other resources or services in the community, such as support groups or inpatient treatment facilities(Occupational Outlook Handbook, n.d.). Mental health counselling and marriage and family counselling is a human service career because its tasks involve dealing directly with people and helping them to overcome the emotional and mental issues that they are going through in life. The educational requirement of a career in mental health counselling and marriage and family therapists is a master’s degree in either Psychology, Social Work, Counselling, marriage and family therapy, or any other related mental health field. The population that this career works are the members of families with mental and emotional disorders or problems (Brooks $ Weikel, 1996). The average salary of this career is $41, 500 per annum. The two main challenges of this career are confidentiality and cultural issues (Brooks & Weikel, 1996). The main potential reward of this career is job fulfilment and satisfaction. On hiring outlook, the employment of mental health counsellors and marriage and family therapists is expected to increase by 29% from 2012 to 2022. I see myself going into this career because I love helping married people to overcome the various problems that they go through in life. Rehabilitation Counsellors The primary task of this career are, Provide individual and group counseling to help clients adjust to their disabilitites, evaluate clients’ abilities, interests, experience, skills, health, and education, develop a treatment plan in consultation with other professionals, such as doctors, therapists, and psychologists, create rehabilitation or treatment plans based on clients’ values, strengths, limitations, and goals, arrange for clients to obtain services, such as medical care or career training; help employers understand the needs and abilities of people with disabilities, as well as laws and resources that impact people with disabilities, assist clients in creating strategies to develop their strengths and adjust to their limitations, locate resources, such as wheelchairs or computer programs, that help clients live and work more independently, monitor clients’ progress and adjust the rehabilitation or treatment plan as necessary, and advocate for the rights of people with disabilities to live in the community and work in the job of their choice. A career in rehabilitation counselling is a human service career because it involves dealing with people directly and helping them to reform and to live a normal life after going through a traumatic event in their lives. The educational requirement of this career is a master’s degree in rehabilitation counselling or related field (Council on Rehabilitation Education, web). The population that this career deals with are the people with emotional and physical disabilities. The average salary of this career is $ 33, 800 per year. The main potential challenge is the lack of enough finances needed in rehabilitation programs. The main reward of this career is that this career has a lot of job fulfilment. On job outlook, employment in rehabilitation counselling is projected to grow by 20% from 2012 to 2022. I don’t see my going into this career because the presence of people with physical disabilities makes me to feel very sorry for them and to almost cry for them. School and Career Counsellors The primary tasks of this career are: help students understand and overcome social or behavioural problems through individual and group counselling, provide individual and small group counselling based on student needs, work with students to develop skills, such as organization, time management, and effective study habits, help students set realistic academic and career goals and develop a plan to achieve them, evaluate students’ abilities and interests through aptitude assessments, interviews, and individual planning; collaborate with teachers, administrators, and parents to help students succeed, deliver classroom guidance lessons on topics, such as bullying, drug abuse, and planning for college or careers after graduation, identify and report possible cases of neglect or abuse, and refer students and parents to resources outside the school for additional support (Occupational Outlook Handbook, n.d.). A career in school and career counselling is a human service career because it entails dealing with people directly, i.e. the young people, and helping them to make informed choices in life in regard to their career choice. The educational requirement of this career is a master’s degree in counselling (American School Counsellor Association, web). The population that this career works are the students. The average salary of this career is $53, 610 per year. The main potential challenge in this career is dealing with students, most of whom are underage, and who are not sure of what they want in life. The two main potential rewards of this job is that it is well paying and it brings about a lot of fulfilment in life. On hiring outlook, employment in school and career counsellors is expected to grow by 12% from 2012 to 2022. I can see myself going into this career because I love working with young people. Social Workers The following are the main tasks of social workers according to the Occupational Outlook Handbook. Identify people who need help, assess clients’ needs, situations, strengths, and support networks to determine their goals, develop plans to improve their clients’ well-being, elp clients adjust to changes and challenges in their lives, such as illness, divorce, or unemployment, research and refer clients to community resources, such as food stamps, child care, and health care, help clients work with government agencies to apply for and receive benefits such as Medicare, respond to crisis situations such as child abuse, advocate for and help clients get resources that would improve their well-being, follow up with clients to ensure that their situations have improved, and, valuate services provided to ensure that they are effective. A career in social work is a human service career because it is a career that involves helping people to overcome their daily challenges in life. The minimum requirement in social work career is a bachelor’s degree in social work. The population this career works with are any group of people undergoing some problems or difficulties in life. The average salary of this career is $44, 200 per annum. The main potential challenge in this career is working with people of different cultures and different backgrounds (National Association of Social Workers, web.). On the other hand, the main reward of a career in social work is that social work job has a lot of job satisfaction. Employment in social work is projected to increase by 19% from the year 2012 to the year 2022. I could see myself going into this career because I love helping the members of the public with various issues that they are going through in life. Social and Human Service Assistants According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, the following are the main tasks of this career. Help determine what type of help their clients need, work with clients and other professionals, such as social workers, to develop a treatment plan, help clients get help with daily activities, such as eating and bathing, coordinate services provided to clients by their own or other organizations, esearch services available to their clients in their communities; determine clients’ eligibility for services such as food stamps and Medicaid, help clients complete paperwork to apply for assistance programs, monitor clients to ensure that services are provided appropriately. A career in social and human service assistant is a human service career because it involves helping people get through difficult times. The minimum educational requirement of this career is a High School Diploma (Social and Human Assistant, web). The population that this career works with is generally all members of the public. The average salary of this career is $16, 000. The main potential challenge of this career is working with people of different professions and different backgrounds. The main reward of this career is that this career has a lot of job satisfaction. Employment in this career is projected to increase by 22% from 2012 to 2022.
