Instead, they used gender, race, womanly virtue, motherhood, and class to save her life. It was not until the 1960s that feminists took a direct approach in condemning domestic violence. Angelina Napolitano murdered her husband in his sleep on Easter Sunday. Napolitano, her husband, and their children were Italian immigrants in the new industrial town of Sault Ste Marie in Ontario. After murdering her husband, she had called her neighbor Mazzo to inform him that she had murdered her husband, and requested him to call the police (Dubinsky and Franca 3).
On arrival, the police found neighbors surrounding her as she narrated the story of the occurrence during which she identified ‘herself as the killer and asked them to arrest her as she was ready to die. Napolitano was seven months pregnant at the time of her arrest. Her trial was held hastily three weeks later with many details of her relationship with her husband becoming known. Apparently, due to the family’s financial crisis her husband constantly pushed her to start prostituting herself for money.
He wanted to get money to build a house for his family. However, as an immigrant he only managed to get low wage employment. He needed her to become a prostitute to supplement his salary and build a house. Sometimes he would send men to the house when she was alone but she declined to open. Later on, he left the family during which Napolitano was involved in an affair with the man boarding at the house. Her husband did not seem to mind the affair but resulted in physical abuse when she declared she was no longer interested in him as a husband.
He attacked her with a knife and stabbed her severally on her arms, stomach, and face (Dubinsky and Franca 6). Although he was arrested he returned home shortly and continued insisting that she becomes a prostitute. On the fateful day, he came from his night shift and threatened to kill her if she did not make money out of prostitution
