This paper highlights the various variables used in conducting this research that include looking at the coverage and replacement rates among others. In addition the paper will give an interpretation of the data collected and the information gathered from various documents. Chapter gives a historical background of the development of the various subsystems in the Chinese pension scheme. There will also be a discussion on the reforms that have been conducted as well as the developments of each subsystem.
These include the basic pension system for civil servants, enterprise employees, and the new rural social pension scheme and lastly the social pension system for urban residents. In addition to this is the Hukou system that was introduced as a means of creating control mechanisms on the mobility of labor and people through registration. This leads to the urban-rural disparity discussion in chapter five, that highlights the gaps in urban and rural areas controlled by the Chinese pension system and compares the same with those in the region.
This is in relation to the coverage and pension benefits that are compared to the income per capita per household. Lastly chapter six gives an indication of the gender disparity in terms of the basic pension system focusing particularly on the gender disparity in the urban pension scheme. This is in relation to the unequal treatment in existence creating visible differences between men and women.
