There were 2.8 million fraudulent transactions on UK-issued cards recorded in the UK in 2008, an increase of four per cent from 2007 (2.7 million). The BCS shows that the risk of being a victim of plastic card fraud increased from 4.7% to 6.4% among card users interviewed in 2007/08 and 2008/09 (Crime in England and Wales 2008/09, 2009, p.3) The above statistics show that even though violent crimes have come down significantly, whereas other types of crimes started to increase drastically during the 2008-2009 period.

In other words, antisocial elements shifted their attention more towards fraudulent crimes or non-violent rather than to violent crimes. Statistics of criminal activities play in important role while assessing the progress of a society. Even if a country attains huge economic developments, the society cannot be said to be healthy one if the crime rates are increasing. I decided to research about crimes in UK because of its sociological importance and also to know more about the changing trends in crime and social disorders in UK.

All major types of crimes are there in UK also even though some kinds of crimes occur in larger proportions whereas other kinds of crimes occur in lesser proportions. British crime survey (BCS) releases crime data every year which will help me immensely in understanding more about the different types of criminal activities in UK. I would like to compare crime rates in other countries especially European countries and America with respect to the crime rates in UK. It should be noted that violent crimes are increasing in other countries whereas in UK, it is decreasing.

A comparative study will give more insights about the reasons of increased non-violent crime and decreased violent crime in UK British criminal justice system is more effective than that of United
