Research Findings Question One Response to the rehabilitation process A black person originating from Sierra Leon did not find any help from the treatment offered in the hospital. Mr. White a white person was also receiving medical treatment in a rehabilitation centre and he claimed that the treatment had helped him as he was recovering. Another Black African interviewed in a rehabilitation centre claimed that the rehabilitation process was not effective because the center is dominated by white people who are not conversant with the black people’s culture. From the findings the white people do not improve after receiving treatment from rehabilitation centers. The chart below represents the percentage in which black people like the treatment as compared to the white people (Office of National Statistic 2013). From the interview people in the rehabilitation centers had different perception on the treatment provided. A black man interviewed claimed that the rehabilitation centers were not effective because they were dominated by white people. He claimed that the white people are not capable of providing care to black people because they do not understand some of the cultural practices possessed by the black people. Comparison of the transcripts Most of the people interviewed developed mental problems due to social issues like family problem and lack of financial support from the necessary people. For example, Mr. White had to leave school in order to help his father who was working in the market. As a result, he ended up smoking weed and taking alcohol. Due to family poverty, Mr. White developed mental problem and become violent. In another case Keenan was brought up by Imam who forced him to read the Koran each day. Keenan was forced to read the Koran but he was not able. The parents were more aggressive and they kept on biting him up in order to read the Koran. The violence exposed to Keenan from childhood made him to adopt a violent behavior with a habit of resisting everything thing. Another black man had developed the mental complication due to family problem they had with his wife. He trusted his wife so much and he could not bear with the changes she developed. Many of the people claimed that they have no faith with the rehabilitation process provided by the medical specialist in the centers. Those rehabilitated explained the problem they faced in the rehabilitation center. Some of the problems include lack of respect of human dignity, failure to understand the resource of mental problem in rehabilitation and giving the patients the same treatment regardless of the problem experienced (Wharton, 2011). An overview of the Transcripts An interview was contact with Mr. White who was in rehabilitation center undergoing treatment. Mr. White did not find the rehabilitation center helpful in treatment as it did not help him recover fully. He developed mental problem due to social problems encountered with his family. Another interview involved Mr. Black who was a black person from Sierra Leone. Mr. Black was still undergoing treatment in the rehabilitation centre. He did not find the treatment helpful thought he improved. The result of his mental problem was violence from his parents. The process of rehabilitation made him to changer on how he perceived things. From the interview contacted some of the patients undergoing mental treatment found the treatment provided helpful while other did not accept the treatment as it did not provide cure for their problems. In another interview at Jr. Doctor’s residence, an interview was contacted with a Black African at 1630 hours to 1704 hours. The interviewee was a doctor and explained the process and challenges faced while dealing with mentally challenged individuals. He stated that rehabilitation centers do not have enough black people who understand the black people’s culture. He further explained that black people are not treated properly because they are handled buy white people. Another interview was contacted at Maroon Centre at 11:30 to 12:04. The interviewee was a professional dealing with people suffering from mental illness. He explained more about how the center works. He also stated problems faced by patients at the centers. Question Two The table below represents the total number of black people experiencing mental problems as compared to other ethnic groups in respect to 2011 UK census. The chart below represents the number of black people in prison as compared to the white people. From the data obtained in the 2011 UK censuses, the black people develop mental complication than the white people. The total number of black people recorded with mental problems was 36.46 which was relatively higher number as compared to the white ethnic groups. The white people experiencing mental problem were 32.52 which was a low number as compared to the black people. From the interview contacted the black people experience more difficulties in live than the white people. The social problems experienced by the black people make them to develop mental problem. The black people are prone to anxiety as compared to the white people. From the census the total number of black people experiencing anxiety was 11,887 as compared to the 2,785 of white people in Wales (Office of National Statistic 2013). The white people commit crime more than the black people. The prisons are dominated by the white people. From the data, the black people commit the crime in order to sustain their lives or as a result of mental problems developed. The white people are imprisoned of petty crimes done for pressure or add up income. The number of white people in prison was 2,340 as compared to the 945 of black people. Crime and mental problems are related in such people that experiencing medical problems are more likely to commit crime. The low representation of black people can be as a result of their low population (Office of National Statistic 2013). Question Three Compulsory admission and mental hospitals together with prison are known to keep people who the government wants to silence all over the world. Some of the people experiencing mental problem are violent and threat to the society. As a result, governments have introduced the system in which they admit mentally ill people in the mental hospital. Many states require people to take the people suffering from mental problems to mental hospital. Individuals who commit crime are taken to prison to prevent them from interacting with other people in the community. Other people who are threat to government or political systems are taken to rehabilitation centers or prisons by force. After individuals are taken to prison or mental hospital, they are deprived the freedom of movement and interaction. Individual admitted in prison or mental hospitals do not have any say to the community or contribution in developing the society. They remain silence and locked in order to reform or rehabilitate (Wharton, 2011). Question Four In his arguments, Franz Fanon was correct that the oppression of a political system is practiced direct and indirect causing social challenges of a certain group. The black people in United Kingdom face discrimination which denies them opportunities to work in government and high ranking positions in the country. From the interview contacted the black people in the rehabilitation centers had no job and they had lived a miserable life. The black people did not even know how they will start their life after leaving the detention centers. Other ethnic groups like the white people in United Kingdom comfortable lives. The social challenges faced by the black people have made them to develop mental problems. The political systems in United Kingdom have disabled the black people by denying them job opportunity. The black people have lived poor lives and engaged in criminal activities. Other black people have developed aggressive behavior as a result o social suffering (Luke and Durkheim 2010). Question Five The black people in UK are an easy target for psychiatrists. From the interview, the lack people claimed that they responded effectively to the treatment. They also noted the problems faced in the rehabilitation centers. The black people also showed interest in the rehabilitation process because they claimed that the rehabilitation centers should be having black psychiatrist who understand better the black people’s culture. The black people are always ready to receive treatment in order to change because they do not have negative altitude. The black people are more exposed to social problem which lead to psychological problems like poverty, family issues and inadequate education. After exposure to social challenges they develop the mental problems and visit psychiatrist for counseling (Luke and Durkheim 2010). Question Six He mental disorders are treatable, and that is why individual go to school to study and become psychiatrist. Individual who graduate successfully start their profession as psychiatrist. The government is spending a lot of money to ensure that individuals a rehabilitated to take part in nation building. Mentally ill people to not contribute in the development of the economy and as a result the government invest heavily to make sure they are fully rehabilitated. The problem is in the rehabilitation centers as they do not operate effectively in ensuring that the patient recovery. From the interview taken the patients claimed that the rehabilitation centers do not help in ensuring patient recover and they should be improved. Mental illness can be treated but the problem is in the process used to treat the people (Murnaghan 2012). Question Seven Health care should be given in respect to the patient’s demand or will but the mental ill patients do not enjoy this privilege. People who are suffering from mental illness do not recognize or understand what should be done. They do not have sound mind and they can not make a sound decision or judgment. Due the state of their mind they can not make any decision and the health care providers treat the patient according to their knowledge (Murnaghan 2012). Question Eight Talk therapy is used by psychiatrist in order to understand the mental problem an individual is suffering from. The psychiatrist reads the patient mind in order to understand the problem and cause of the problem. Talk therapy can not be applied in many situations because it is not much reliable. Sometimes, there are some psychiatrists who provide bad counseling to the patient. After a patient receives bad counseling he or she develops more complications instead of getting treated. Talk therapy is also faced by the problem of labeling. The mental ill patients are labeled and they develop negative attitude toward their lives. After labeling the psychiatrist also develops negative attitude while dealing with the patient and fails to give appropriate counseling. The talk is faced with challenges and can not guarantee full treatment for individuals suffering from mental illness (Luke and Durkheim 2010). Question Nine It is not right to claim that there is no mental disorder because in the real sense people suffer from mental problem. It is true that the political system enacts policies to undermine people who bring up threat by putting them in rehabilitation centers and prisons but still mental disorders exist. People suffer from mental problem and that is why learning institutions have introduced the programs to deal with mental disorders. It is difficulty to undermine an individual by putting him or her in rehabilitation center because the United Nations and other human right organizations are concerned in ensuring that human lives are respected. People who deprive others their rights or mistreat people due to political reason are taken to international criminal court which is located in Hague (Luke and Durkheim 2010). Question Ten Mental illness exists and those sociologist who claim that it does not exist they base their claims in a single perspective. Different groups of people have certain practices which can be regarded as mental problem but this does not make them mentally ill. They live normal lives and can change and leave their past behaviors. On the other hand, there are people who do not have sound mind and even do not understand the activities they carry out. Mental illness can be caused by physical disorders or by other diseases (Marshall and Scott, 2009). Question Eleven The use of some terms like us, we and them gives individuals the sense of belonging. Individuals classify themselves in a certain group and see the difference they have with other people. The colonial view of people culture was different because people belonged to different groups and had different cultural practices. Colonial authorities undermined the colonized people due to their culture and way of living. This led to classification of people by using the terms “us, we and them”. The different in grouping led to conflict between the formed groups (Henslin, 2007). Question Twelve Racism is practiced in many countries. In the UK racisms also exist and this has brought about many conflicts and social problems to the minority groups. The black people have been underrepresented in the top ranking government post. Due to racism the black people have not been getting well paid job and they live miserable lives. As a result, they end up in criminal activities or being drug addicts. Some of the black people have developed mental problems due to depression. In the rehabilitation centers the black people are over represented. They face many challenges, because they do not have more senior people to help them get a well paid job.
