What are the dual roles of NATO? Are the same roles applicable to the UN? NATO is the leading security union in Europe. The organization came into existence after the world war, when Soviet Union was carrying out with its aggression. NATO provided the integrity and ensured security to the members nations post second world war era. USSR was disturbing the peace in most of the European countries and trying to dominate the whole of Europe. (“Formation of NATO”) To counter the aggression of the soviets few European countries along with the United States signed the North Atlantis Treaty organization and formed a force of their own.

Under the head of NATO the countries formed military forces, shared and distributed nuclear and chemical weapons among them to provide collective security of the western part of the Europe against soviet invasion. Gradually, with the passage of time, the soviet menace disappeared and a change in role of the NATO was spotted. NATO began concentrating on peacemaking roles and played the role of negotiator in euro-Atlantic issues. NATO significantly cut down its joint forces by well over 35%.

Severe decrease in the numbers of air force and naval vessels also has been accounted. NATO started working with various non NATO countries in order to promote peace and settle disputes. In early 2001 NATO was instrumental to prevent the outbreak of civil war in Yugoslavia, Macedonia. It acted as an arbitrator and settled the issue by deploying a small NATO force for the peaceful surrender of the rebellions. In the recent years NATO aims to stop the terror which have engulfed most part of the world and NATO’s operation in Afghanistan was its first venture outside of Euro-Atlantic arena.

(“NATO Transformed”) The changed strategy of NATO now focuses on crisis management, peace support, normalizing the post conflict situations. The change in strategy infers upon the dual role played by the organization both as a protector for risk and uncertainty and also an organization who aims to achieve political stability in various parts of the world. The aims and roles of the United Nations have been somewhat similar in outlook. United Nations thrives to improve the social and economic condition of the people around the world.

The UN focuses on devising humanitarian strategies in case of emergencies. The actions plans suggested by the council are then implemented in the respective countries (“The Role of the UN and its Agencies”). The united Nation has been providing a major role in the peace keeping movements. The United Nations peace keeping force has been detrimental in providing negotiations and have often positioned themselves between frontlines and had guaranteed ceasefire operations. The peace keeping force had been effective in carrying out such assignments and operations in regions like Middle East, and in the Kashmir issue prevailing between India and Pakistan.

Owing to the similar nature of work, The United Nations and NATO have started working in collaboration and have extended consultation between them. Instances of their support toward each other’s working have been of utter importance in settlement of global peace.
