Download file to see previous pages The reality part of the show as also the participation of celebrities from different background add to the general glamour of the show and the show and its different versions has been extremely successful due to its easy adaptability to local and regional cultures thus highlighting a universal human preference for such programs.
The first part of this thesis will focus on the research agenda and research questions will be formulated to understand issues related to broader questions that will deal with the cultural significance of dancing, celebrity culture in Britain and China as well as audience participation and involvement. There will then be more detailed description of the TV series and comparisons will be drawn between TV programs and the show as in UK and that conducted in China and similarities and differences between the two shows could be highlighted. The implications of the show would be studied considering the relations between Hong Kong and mainland China as also possibilities of western influence if any on the Chinese culture. This may even be related to the worldwide phenomenon of globalization and the influence of TV shows in spreading the culture of globalization. Cultural and sociological or political variations are considered and the reasons for the popularity of such programs could also be examined.
The TV programmes around the world that feature reality stars or TV and Film stars may highlight not just about the local and regional cultures but also the celebrity cultures as followed by the TV and movie goers and followers and thus such programmes shed light on the nature of celebrity culture and preoccupation of people with celebrities suggesting why these programmes may or may not be successful. In this particular case study and research project the influence and impact of Strictly Come Dancing a British TV show and its Chinese version and counterpart could be studied to present wider cultural and sociological issues related to TV shows and an analysis of celebrity culture or expectations and demands of TV viewers as in the west or Britain or east as in china and Hong Kong.

This research project is a comparative study of the TV program Strictly Come Dancing in the UK and China and the study aims to bring out the similarities and differences between the two shows and highlights cultural, sociological implications of the process considering the popularity of the show in UK and Hong Kong and mainland China.
