His father has been stern, believing in 'tough love', without the emotional support or communication required to carry it out successfully. Jason's mother has made excuses for her son and has covered up and allowed his inappropriate behavior, possibly due to her own guilt. The conflict between the mother and father are at the core of the family problems and Jason reacts negatively to this conflict.It was advised that the family enter family counseling based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).

Through questioning, it was found that the mother and father rarely effectively communicate the important issues surrounding Jason's behavior and often have vastly different perceptions of what is acceptable to the family. Through role-playing, the family was taught to communicate more effectively. This broke down the defensive mode that the family was constantly in, in an attempt to justify their position, and helped to defuse the anger. The family was given exercises to complete at home. For example, the father was instructed to write down clear boundaries for Jason, such as no drugs, and communicate this effectively with Jason.

The mother and father were instructed to agree upon the boundaries before they were presented to Jason and to agree to abide by them. Jason has agreed to abide by the boundaries or have a civil discussion regarding them.In a follow-up session, the family was interviewed to evaluate what changes they and made and the effect it has had on their life. The mother commented that she felt relieved that she was finally able to communicate with her husband and felt that their bonding was much stronger.

The father stated that for once he felt like his demands for good behavior were being met and that he was being listened to. Jason's progress has been slower but has shown improvement. He still questions some limitations placed on him such as a curfew but understands the purpose of the rule. The family plans to continue to practice the CBT techniques that they learned in the sessions.
