Two problems have revoked the immigration reform debate, the recent recession and unemployment. The recent recession has been the worst since the great depression and the constant number of immigrants entering the country has reduced the number of employments available for the local Americans. The recession resulted in the loss of 8 million jobs, unauthorized immigrants did not return home after, because people faced the same problems in their countries.

A bill was passed by the senate that strictly prohibited the employers from hiring people with improper documentation. They were instructed to fire their employees who did not have their proper papers for example their names, social security data etc. Due to this law many immigrants fell in 2008-09 in 20 years but it is assumed that they will increase again after the economic recovery and occupational growth in the coming years.

Another problem that is causing this debate to reform is that many states are enacting laws for unauthorized migrations, including a law in Arizona that says, any unauthorized presence in the state is a crime. A bill was passed in 2005 which legalized many foreign unauthorized immigrants and toughened laws against them. Many employers are being instructed to use a web E-verify system which shows the status of the new hires, meaning whether they have citizenship or are unauthorized immigrants.

Immigration at a large scale negatively affects the economy of any country, it directly affects on the rate at which the population grows. In 1950s the fertility rate per woman was 3.7 children per woman but later it dropped down to 2.0. It has increased again due to the high population and also due to the cultural and religious diversity. In 1990 and 2010 the foreign born U.S citizens were up to 20 to 40 million while the total population in the U.S is 250 to 310 million which constitutes up to 0ne- third of the total population.

There were 39 million foreign-born residents in the U.S in 2009 and 30 percent of them were there illegally. These immigrants have mostly been Asian and Hispanic which is changing the composition of the population. In 1970 there was more non-Hispanic white population than Hispanics and Asians, but in 2010 there were 310 million residents out of which two thirds was non-Hispanic whites and 20 percent were Asians or Hispanics. If this pattern is continued then by 2050 the U.S residents will decline to 50 percent and Hispanics and Asians will rise to one-third of the total population.

These immigrants mostly move to the U.S in the search of employments while less than 10 percent come in the search of refuge or asylum skipping persecution in their own countries. In 2009 statistics, around 15 percent of the workers in the U.S were foreign born, these immigrants and refugees mostly form the US labor force. These immigrants not only form the majority in the work force, instead they not only work they do more than just work; they pay annual taxes and also consume services that support tax.
