Lincoln Hospital: Third Party Intervention Student’s Name University Affiliation Executive summary Lincoln hospital was soon faced up with major problem soon after it went into an election to elect a new chief of surgery for the hospital. The problems encountered at the hospital were severe since they affected the operating room and the hospital at large (Waddell, 2011). The rate number of Lincoln hospital nurses started to decrease drastically by forty percent which was a great loss. This loss only happened for a short time: a period of eight months only. The nurses had already quitted job working at the Lincoln hospital (Hosford, 2009, p.239). In order to replace the nurses who quitted their jobs, the hospital management hired other nurses who in turn were less experienced especially in the main areas of speciality. In a more hurting truth after the major crisis befall Lincoln hospital, the hospital could not satisfy the total number of vacant officers hence they fall short of seven surgical nurses in the operation room (Waddell, 2011). The question that lingered in mind is that, what was there to do in order to rectify the situation that was affecting the hospital? The larger crisis that developed too at Lincoln hospital is that the nurses and doctors were virtually at war. War existed between don, the new chief of surgery and Mary the veteran operation room director (Waddell, 2011). There was a difficult choice for the Lincoln president either to fire Mary or not since the market was increasingly competitive and there were escalating costs. What was the right way to go over this crisis? The existence of war amongst the Lincolns hospital staff contributed to the crisis that humiliated the activities and service offering at the hospital to cater for the lives of its patients (Waddell, 2011). Lincoln hospital is situated in south western part of the United States with a hospital capacity of 300 beds that caters for in patients. It is the busiest single site hospital that offers quality emergency services in New York City for adult and paediatric level two trauma centre for patients. Lincoln hospital received high ratings in the field of medication and research due to its increased speciality services it was offering (Waddell, 2011). When the hospital management went into an election so as to elect new medical staffs for the hospital, it was a new era opening for the hospital to be faced up with a number of issues that largely affected the hospital practices. In this research report I would like to enumerate the processes in providing solutions from the problem faced and also offer a suggestion for a third party if possible (Waddell, 2011). Problems encountered at Lincoln hospital In another response, the crisis existed even more since the hospital was also faced up with inadequate equipments in handling hospitals practices. According to the hospital information, Lincoln hospital orthopaedic surgeons used to begin surgery processes before they realise that necessary prosthesis that included an example of artificial hips, knee or finger joints were wrong in size, were not ready or even not yet ordered yet they were in the operation process (Waddell, 2011). Was it confusion? Was it improper roles in the management unit? Maybe, and also the availability of less experienced nurses who were yet in the operation room at the Lincoln hospital ready to provide services at their best levels contributed to the crisis. Also the hospital had a tendency of delaying surgery practices since they had to borrow equipments from neighbouring hospitals. All of these problems increased the crisis’s the hospital was facing at that time (Waddell, 2011). Another problem that Lincoln hospital faced included of scheduled problems that were encountered which showed some of the Anaesthesiologist’s were often unavailable during those experiments they are being accepted to be present hence it was a habit for the nurses to delay all the schedules that are after them (Waddell, 2011). The shortage of nurses exacerbated many difficulties as to the lack of staff mostly required tight schedules to practice hospital duties. Even at a time when the doctors were ready to begin surgery, the scheduled nurses could still be occupied at another operating room thus the practice being delayed too. In certain instances, the surgeons were always on odds with one another thus they used to consider their own time to be more valuable than anyone else thus created their emergency in order to obtain prime time (Waddell, 2011). The question to ask is, should doctor have their emergencies rather than their patients? Part A Problem resolving Reconciliation build up strategy If I was considered as one of the problem resolver at the Lincoln hospital I will gladly rectify the whole system from the human nature into the hospital practises (Jeremy, 2011). The existence of war between the staff contributed to ineffective work schedule at the hospitals since it encouraged non corporation between hospital staff members. Strict regulations need to be adopted to encourage the hospital members in limiting and providing respectful dues to everyone (Jeremy, 2011). War does not encourage working together thus hindering all practises at the hospitals. Frequent meeting and group work participation among the groups at war will encourage them to solve the differences they encounter. Public participation gathering will be another way out in providing out a better solution solving to the viable and consistent war between Don the new chief of surgery and Mary the veteran operating room director at the Lincoln hospital (Jeremy, 2011). Offering internship activities to students Decreased number of nurses at the hospital is another problem that’s needs to be rectified as soon as possible and the better intervention is to offer internship activities for medical students to be part of their role in assisting to deliver services at the hospital (Jeremy, 2011). Offering internship and students practices at the Lincoln hospital will enable the few medical staff doctors have enough personnel’s in terms of nurses to assist them conduct all hospital activities effectively. The increased number of students nurses will also take care of the duties they are given unto them thus an easy flow of services at the hospital compared to the time when there were less nurses and medical staff at large in the operation room (Jeremy, 2011). Training of medical staffs Lincoln hospital should also provide room for training of the less experienced nurses at the hospital to acquire experience from the senior medical experts at the hospital while in the operation room (Hosford, 2009, p.233). Training will be a good activity for the less experienced nurses at the Lincoln hospital to gather knowledge and experience from the qualified medical doctors who will be willing to share information basing on theory and concepts as they train the less qualified nurses at the hospital. It will be a learning zone for the nurses to gain knowledge and become more experienced medical nurses at the hospital (Hosford, 2009, p.233). Purchasing more equipments on loan Lincoln hospital can rectify the crisis on inadequate equipments at the hospital through engaging its buying procedures via the banks where they can be offered loans so that they can purchase more hospital equipments and avoid borrowing equipments from neighbouring hospitals so that they can run their operations at the hospital (Hosford, 2009, p.231). The government should offer grants to these hospitals that they fall short on target to achieve their medical objects due to inadequate funds. Government loans and grants offered to the Lincoln hospital will ensure that the management will develop effective strategy that will ensure it has enough employed medical nurses and also be able to buy medical equipments to facilitate operation procedures effectively without any delay (Jeremy, 2011). Third party intervention Third part intervention in the Lincoln hospital crisis will be good since it will offer an adequate ground in rectifying all the problems that are not easily resolved. Inadequate funds from the hospital will therefore needs outsourced finances from other parties such as the government grants and other sponsorship bodies (Hosford, 2009, p.233). Therefore a third party intervention at the Lincoln hospital will be appropriate in this case. Part B Lesson learnt From the Lincoln hospital case I have learnt that there should be a room to settle conflict among workers at all level so as to increase co-operation and togetherness at the workstation. Also at every workstation there should be a room for training that will enable staff member share and acquire knowledge from each other thus becoming experienced in the areas of speciality (Jeremy, 2011). Conflict resolution among staff members is one of the best alternatives in solving out issues that are occurring in working stations (Denis, 2008, p.147). Having adequate time to resolve war or rivalry between co-workers will ensure they gain trust in working together with each other. The benefit accredited with conflict resolution is that there will be unity among the rivalry party whom they will be forced to resettle down their wars in the work place (Hosford, 2009, p.231). This is a great intervention to ensure there is steady flow of activities at the current and future work station. The plan to implement a conflict resolution team is to start by creating an effective atmosphere that will support a discussion process, clarification of perceptions among the rivalry parties that are engaged in a mutual conflict resolving, focusing on individual and the shared needs of the war parties, building shared positive power , looking into the future and be able to learn all failures and achievement from the past, generation of options and the last step in developing a conflict resolution among rivalry parties is to make mutual benefit agreement and the conflict will be resolved (Denis, 2008, p.147). Training in an organisation provides an important role in establishing the best impact an employee can be appraised and be monitored as they work (Denis, 2008, p.145). Training procedures will be establishing competitiveness through increasing productivity level of the employees and also it will define the competencies by providing development strategies to accomplish duties. Training plans can be accomplished through setting the objectives of the plan, stating on whom to train, choosing suitable training materials, picking right program for training, fixing schedule and the last step of plan is to bring the plan into action. The set plan will facilitate training activities at both the current and future working stations (Denis, 2008, p.145). Conclusion Lincoln hospital is one of the best hospitals in the united states that has a great potential in elevating from the crisis it is in to achieve the best accreditation. Simple plans should be put in place to bring up a potential growth with fully fledged services that will ensure its patients will always be on to loving the services being offered to them (Hosford, 2009, p.235). Third party intervention upon this hospital will be appropriate in rectifying all the mischievous activities happening at the Lincoln hospital thus becoming the best hospital in out-patients service delivery.
