Once this is established we have to try and find out the impact that this relationship has on the businesses that trade in them. This is done by conducting several experiments and using the information collected to draw our conclusions. Introduction Cigarette Smoking and alcohol consumption are common past times across the world. The United Kingdom is home to millions of beer lovers; it is no surprise that United Kingdom is home to some of the most famous beer brands in the world, such as Guinness and Heineken. The smoking of cigarettes is also becoming common for the middle class in the United Kingdom. Research shows that men are much more drinkers of alcohol than women. The smoking of cigarettes was in the past considered a male thing, but recent trends show that even women are taking up the habit. This represents an increasing demand for these products. The United Kingdom is also home to thousands of drinking venues. Each of these has to struggle for the same number of bar goers and this represents a challenge. People want to go to venues where they can drink alcohol and smoke without any restrictions. So for any business, combining both of these activities can be beneficial. This is because it gives them an advantage over their competitors who might not be offering the same products. In this research, we try to show the relationship between these factors. We have come up with a number of experiments that indicate the preference of various venues based on the type of products that they have to offer to the customers. We then collected these data and try to show the link that exists. Our conclusion is then put into perspective for use by business owners so that they can find ways in which they can stock certain products so as to increase its number of visitors. Objectives 1. To find the correlation between smoking and drinking alcohol Research has found that taking in various amounts of alcohol usually boosts the pleasurable effects gained from use of nicotine; this induces people to smoke when they are drinking alcoholic beverages. These findings provide an explanation for the common perception that people smoke a lot more when in bars. The findings also helps explain further statistics which show that alcoholics tend to smoke more than non-drinkers, smokers are also more likely to be alcoholics. 2. To find out how would the correlation between smoking and drinking alcohol is beneficial for a business in the UK. Literature Review Smoking and drinking are part of the culture of the United Kingdom. This view is supported by (Johnston, 2013) and (Wesensten, 2012). They claimed that the drinking culture was pre dominantly part of the British peoples. According to (Martin, 2008) Drinking of alcohol has an additive effect on the users and this is the same for the use of cigarettes. It is therefore correct to assume that both of these factors have a profound influence on the character of an individual (Heath, 1995). This means that such activities can have an effect on the social behavior of the people. This does not have to be consciously done, some of the actions that users engage in is subconsciously done with the underlying reason being the influence of these drugs. Research by (Tyrer & Silk, 2008) shows that venues that sell and allow the use of both of these products have higher human traffic than those that do not. This can be used to make the conclusion that for an establishment to have more business, it can simply allow the sale of both of these products within its facility. In this way, there can be more human traffic and subsequently more money for the business (Beaglehole & Bonita (2009). . Business studies show that the role of any given business is to obtain profits; this means that business owners were always looking for ways in which they can expand their businesses. As such, this study is very crucial to them and the findings can be used to change the way they do business. This view was shared by (Martin, 2008), when he states that alcohol dependency has both negative effects and positive effects. The negative effects are on the long term health of the individual. The positive effect however is to the businesses where these people purchase the alcohol. Martin argues that in cases where alcohol users also smoke cigarettes, they cannot go to establishments where one of these products is missing. This means these people drive business in areas where they can get both of their substances of choice. Methodology/methods To get data in regards to this question, we tried to find the relationship between alcohol drinking and smoking of cigarettes. This was then related to the impact it would have on businesses that sell these two products. Our data was obtained through two experiments. 1. Experiment 1: this involves a test to find the preference of buyers when it comes to choice of location where they spend their money. 2. Experiment 2: This involved giving of questionnaires to a number of respondents and assessing their responses. Experiment 1 Participants One hundred and fifteen individuals (83 males and 32 females) can participate in this experiment. These should be aged between 20 and 65, with a mean age of 39.5(SD=7.5). The youngest participants (12 males and 13 females) should be graduates and recruited from bars around their universities. The middle aged people were employed may be recruited from decent drinking places across the country. Procedure The participants will told that their task was to rate various drinking and smoking outlets on a scale of one to ten. The participants would also be asked to tick whether they would go back to the drinking venues again if given the choice. The participants will to be taken to three different places in groups of 50 so that they would replicate the scene of a common bar. The experiment was taken in a series of steps: Session 1 was the first session. This was an assessment of the knowledge of different beer types by the participants and the types of cigarettes Session 2: the participants would be assessed on their habits and whether they frequently went out for fun and recreation Session 3; the participants would be taken to various entertainment spots. In the first spot, only alcoholic drinks will be available. In the second spot, smoking will be allowed but at restricted areas within the facility. In the third spot, the participants would taken to a facility where they will able to drink and smoke without any restriction Session 4: the participants would be given a free will to go to any of the locations they had been taken to and enjoy themselves. During the experiments, all the participants would be given a certain amount of money to spend at the various venues. The amount spent by each member would be tabulated after they left each venue. Results The participants would have the chance to enjoy themselves at the various venues. All would take a drink or have something to take at the various venues. On the final day the participants would be given the freedom to go to any place of their choice, it is expected that 67% of them would go back to spot c where they could freely drink alcohol and smoke cigarette. Only the non-smokers are most likely to go back to the venue where smoking was not allowed. These are also people who are irritated by the sight of people smoking, majority of people who drink alcohol do not mind the smell of cigarette smoke. Analysis Given this scenario we can conclude that people are more willing to spend money where they can get maximum satisfaction. Drinking of alcohol and smoking cigarettes give users a sense of satisfaction and they do not mind spending their money on these items. What this means is that businesses that have both of this products Experiment 2 Participants The questionnaires would be filled by random people across the country. These are gotten by random sampling of the population. In total, 536 people are expected to fill the questionnaires. These can be randomly picked along the streets. Sample questionnaire Yes Answers no Are you older than 20years Do you take alcohol Do you smoke cigarettes Do you take in both Do you go out What is the average amount of money you spend on a single night out The aim is to find out their preferences when it came to the two products, beer and cigarettes. All the participants would be informed that they should not include their names in the questionnaire so as to maintain their privacy. The information to be collected will also to be kept in safe custody and the data would not be used by third parties. The information will only be used in regards to this study. Findings Of all those expected to fill the questionnaire, only those above 20 years old would be considered valid to take part in the survey. It is expected that over 60 % of people are drinkers with 30% expected to be smokers too. Analysis There are many people who take alcohol and smoke cigarettes at the same time. In this regard, these people would most probably visit venues where they would be able to take alcohol and also smoke. These two activities go hand in hand and it was not possible to segregate them. This means that establishments that serve alcohol and cigarette are most likely to get more business than those that simply sell a simple commodity. Limitations and implications Our study may be faced with several limitations. First, external generalization of our findings will be limited by the small size of our sample group and the cultural homogeneity of the samples. This is despite the fact that we expect the same results to apply as we extend this study to other groups of people because we are studying personal preferences. Secondly, some of our participants might not feel free to participate in the drinking and smoking activities. In this way, they might not give a true opinion of what they think and this might lead to misleading results. Given the fact that some of the participants will be given a stipend to spend on the drinks, this can induce people who do not have regular drinking habits to overindulge. People like free tings and these are not an exception. The drinking and smoking habits might not be truly represented. Finally, excessive drinking of alcohol is hazardous to one’s health. The participants in this research might over indulge themselves leading to bad health. Smoking of cigarettes is also harmful to one’s health. When conducting the survey, it might seem that we are supporting abuse of these drugs which is not the case. Conclusion This study tries to determine whether the correlation between smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol can be beneficial for a business in the UK. All these factors imply that businesses that sell these products will perform much better than those which did not have the two products.
