Everyday playtime for adults by Zamora Dulce Introduction The concept of recreation and leisure inthe human society is hard to explain. Leisure time, according to experts, is the time when one is not engaged in any routine activity and can participate in fun activities of his own. Leisure time is any free time in which one can engage in multiple activities to suit her, and spend some time and resources on them. In the modern business world, people create activities for people to spend their time and resources on in their free time or after work. Dulce Zamora explores the concept of leisure and its meaning to adults. According to Zamora, there are some inherent benefits of adults including leisure time and activities in their lives. Similarly, there are some negative impacts of not including leisure time in adults’ lives. Additionally, some factors determine the choice of play or leisure activities that will satisfactorily suit people’s plans and produce the most benefits to an individual. Discussion This discussion will investigate the concept of leisure as discussed by Dulce Zamora, and outline some of the discussed benefits and limitations of including, or not including leisure time and activities in adults’ lives. Zamora recalls of childhood behavior, activities and the role they play in the refreshing human mind. For instance, he says, “Remember creating mud pies as a child? Think of, how slimy the damp mud sensed between your fingers, and how you enjoyed designing the parties,” (Dillard 5). Alternatively, how about the moment you cycled your bicycle for hours about your environs, halting only when you felt exhausted. Although, the moments of extreme fun when one could move around without restrictions may appear far away, and imaginary with the present day’s never-ending list of activities to perform, it may be achievable to bring back most of the childhood fun and enjoyment and integrate it into today’s adult busy schedules. Before wondering out how to incorporate leisure time into the busy schedules, it may aid to realize what you are attempting to fix, (Charlotte 10). Experts suggest that, for anything to be attractive and pleasurable, freedom of choice and the view of control are crucial aspects. For instance, an individual who loves cooking of gourmet may not find enjoyment in making a meal that he feels attached into doing. Similarly, individuals who feel they should fix leisure time into their schedules may be hitting the goal. Dingwell argues that individuals tend to go to extremities and fill even their vacation time with multiple activities and tasks they believe they should take part in, for instance sports, parties and other social activities. Instead of concentrating on the crucial activities, they recommend for ways, to relax, and having sympathy for ourselves. Leisure time, according to Dingwell, is all about checking in and realizing that the questions below may aid determine whether an event is an appropriate thing to participate in now. Will the activity energize me? Will the activity put me in a place or state where I will feel better and relax? Will I just feel it as an obligation? The solution to most of these questions involves knowing oneself better, whether one is a social person, or a person who cherishes settings that are more intimate. In addition, it will entail realizing whether one cherishes participating in softball, watching movies or opera, or working out crossword puzzles. The significant part is that one is participating in something that is intrinsically enjoyable to him, and not doing it because of other motives like guilt, reward or social class. For instance, a little kid who is shaping mud patties is doing it because she delights herself in the activity and for no other motives. Howard argues that the right level motivation is also crucial to enjoyment. For example, if an individual who loves to figure out crossword puzzles derives the hints extremely calmly, the person may get discouraged with it. Alternatively, a puzzle that demands to know a complex vocabulary may be extremely complicated that there is no chance to enjoy filling in the blanks. According to Zamora, the concept of fixing in leisure activities and time in the frantic timetable may appear unworkable for a number of individuals who feel they lack enough money, time and necessary resources. Experts agree, however, that failure to organize your schedules may imply the different between better health and illness. Blair Justice, the psychology professor, at Texas School of Public health University argues that people have no time to make themselves ill. He believes that mood, thoughts and beliefs influences people’s health (Zamora 1). Justice believes that stressed people get into a “disease state,” in which toxic substances including norepinephrine and cortisol can create challenges on the immune system of a person, often leading to anxiety and hostility. He focuses on the studies that indicate a connection between increased levels of these toxic substances in the bloodstream and epidemic buildup causing the disease of the heart. Additionally, in his research with patients at Texas University, Justice argues that breast cancer women often report to him that they suffered extensive pressure before they were diagnosed with the condition. According to him, stress may not be the cause of the ailment, but is allegedly a significant factor amid various factors (such as the environment and genetics) that influence what transpires in the body. On a clear note, the advantages of leisure time appear magnanimous. In addition to the fact that leisure is enjoyable, it evidently reduces serotonin and dopamine levels – nerve transmitter responsible for calming and pleasurable properties. Similarly, depending on the activity selected, leisure time offers an opportunity to link with colleagues, look inward, advance knowledge and keep fit. Leisure time also rejuvenates, relaxes and reduces steam. Additionally, among the sick people, leisure time and activities enhances recovery and promotes as sense of health and happiness despite disease. Tinsley suggests that one feels relaxed, healthier, glad, and extremely fulfilled when he can perform activities that provide the satisfaction and pleasure he desires. Consequently, the long-term benefits of leisure is the ability to perform all these activities leading to an increased level of mental, psychological and physical health, and increased quality of life. According to Tinsley, most of the people do not require much convincing regarding the benefits of playtime. The main limitation is mainly how create and fix it in the tight schedules of their lives. Zamora suggests that people should make room for play and relaxation of mind. Scientific literature reveals that most individuals tend to find activities and things like water, tamed animals, natural environment, poetry, music, hobbies, talents and the companionship of humans more pleasurable. Justice, who presently climbed the Rockies of Colorado with his spouse and two dogs, says that some individuals take drugs like heroin, marijuana and cocaine to increase the level of dopamine and serotonin, but the effective way of doing it is to pamper your pet, or hug your partner, observe sunsets or do something attractive in nature. A full-time holiday is not importance, although, to get the advantages to leisure time. In reality, advocates of health argue that it might be crucial to interpolate playtime into the schedules of the day. The healthy activities to participate in depend on the individual, but various suggestions involve strolling around, listening to radio and music, reading a magazine, window-shopping, chatting with a friend or browsing for jokes and other fun activities on the internet. Similarly, for extremely busy people, it might aid occasionally pause what he is doing and taking a fresh air. Experts agree that there may be nothing to be done about the moment stress, but it is significant to permit ourselves for downtime, and realize when one’s life is extremely packed that he cannot afford some time to restructure or stop for perspective. Dingwell believes that people may not completely reestablish and revive their playtime, but they are just a minute ahead of their earlier status. Similarly, it is equally possible for individuals to have pleasure and fun in their work. In addition, the people who find their works enjoyable may lose the focus of the fact that they are doing it for rewards, and attempt to do the right roles because they find pleasure in performing them. Experts agree some official checks establish the professions and careers that best suit people. Such tests are found in the center for vocational counseling, colleges, employment agencies and offices of psychologists. As Annie Dillard says “Hitting pay dirt,” discovering the benefits of leisure is like discovering something valuable in life, (Dillard 14). Annie’s argument supports Zamora’s idea in that some factors influence the people choice of leisure activities. For instance, the neighborhood one lives shapes his personality sense and sense of community. Neighborhood determines the leisure activities and full success of engagement in such activities. Frazier’s analysis “in Praise of Margins” explores the fact that boundaries are required for the sake of the people’s stability. He asserts that as the globe becomes increasingly jammed up people need margins – where people can attempt out the unusual schemes that they might be afraid to acknowledge with colleagues observing. He suggests that by participating in marginal events, people can manage to escape various stresses that the jammed up environment can provide. The marginal vicinity for Frazier was the woods where he would regularly visit with his friends, surveying and mapping their endless imaginations. Some boundary lines that Ian describes are things that advantage people at a personal perspective, (Frazier 45). In this story, Ian reveals that as he advanced to adulthood, he was an increasingly ambition individual – he did everything for a purpose, Compared to Frazier’s childhood, his mature age constituted of goals and pursuits. He later realizes that, at some points, people should negate from their purpose filled lives. Frazier’s argument support Zamora’s concept of leisure and its benefits to adults in various ways. He demonstrates that, at times, people need to break away from their busy schedules “jammed up world” and have fun, restore and rejuvenate their efforts and lives for the sake of their sanity (health). I agree with Zamora because, at times, people need to break for their routine activities and have fun. People need to energize, reduce stress, rejuvenate and restore their bodies and mind and recreate their health through leisure activities. Going back to the odds, margins, is necessary for our sanity. In the world full of stress and depressing routines, people need to spend some time exploring and navigating their imaginations and thoughts to break of from routine work. Leisure time and activities are extremely significant and a necessity in maintaining better mental and physical health. Conclusion In conclusion, therefore, Zamora agrees that Leisure time is extremely crucial for adults because of healthy benefits it offers. Adults should include playtime in the jammed up schedules to allow restoration and rejuvenation of mind and body. Works cited Dillard, Annie. An American Childhood. New York: Perennial Library, 1988.
