Description: I got three clats and all time logs back since I started the community placement. I got many comments on the clat that helped me to do better in the next clat. When I was reviewing my clat, I identified my strengths and also found out areas that required improvement. I noticed that I need some help in writing as I did a lot of mistakes in grammar section. My clinical teacher told me to take grammar classes as those classes might be a helpful tool in rectification of my mistakes. I am planning to take grammar classes from next week. Feelings: In the beginning, I felt so embarrassed and uncomfortable by such remarks but later on, my thoughts diverted to the positive side of the recommendation made by my teacher. I realized that it would be beneficial not only for my present occupation but also for my future career. This thought made me feel enthusiastic and excited about course at Humber writing classes. Evaluation: Good: The overall experience, according to me, was good as I realized my mistakes and got a chance to overcome my weaknesses. It is nice to have a person (i.e. my teacher) who was there to guide me about the shortcomings and show me the path to improvement. The path that my teacher suggested was free writing classes at Humber. Bad: It was bad to realize that I did many grammatical mistakes in my clat. Analysis: The information about your weaknesses helps you improve and eliminate them. I have experienced it when my teacher my teacher gave me feedback that my writing skills needs improvements and I took immediate steps to improve my writing skills. I also actively engage in evaluation of my own performance and it helps me in the identification of personal strengths and areas of growth and development. According to the article Thematic analysis of written assignment feedback: Implications for nurse education ,”Feedback is now accepted as a key factor affecting learning and, in educational settings, the term feedback is used in the context of assessments, where its main function is to provide information about students' current performance as well as constructive comments that enhances future earning”(Parboteeah, 2009). So, it is very important to measure your performance and evaluate the areas that require improvement. Conclusion: I could have joined the writing classes after I got feedback from first clat. Action Plan S: I want to take writing classes. M: I will go to the classes once in a week. A: I will avail the free classes at Humber and start taking classes by next week R: within a month I will improve my writing. T: I want to finish the writing classes by 16th of December MY SECOND EXPERIENCE: Implement an appropriate plan of action based on assessment of priority needs, nursing judgment, availability of resources. Description: In this week’s group meeting we created a project named logic model for community outreach project. In the Project logic model we discussed all the steps that are part of our final project. All the group members incorporated their ideas keeping in mind the priorities which included the needs of community, nursing judgment and availability of resources. In the project logic model, we discussed about the what, who and how. What- social marketing, Who- target population (immigrant-all ages), How-include activities (outreach booth with bookmarks, blood pressure table, kids table). The group also discussed the short term and long term goals. All agreed that to increase awareness of RWC both the long term and short term goals should be achieved and moreover sustainability will be one of the long term goals. During the meeting Poonam got a call from Priya (she was in Brampton civic hospital with Reema and she met with Margret as well) and she told Poonam that for our final outreach day, we can only have one booth. Feelings:I think that the discussion about the project logic model helped me to be clear about how we are going to reach the final goals of social marketing. After the meeting I was feeling more comfortable of how to achieve the goals. It gave me a feeling of satisfaction that I was nearer to my goal. But I also felt a little upset as I got to know that we were going to have only one booth whereas we planned for two different booths. Evaluation: Good: In the meeting a lot of good things happened too. First was the project logic model because of which the outreach project became clearer to me. Group members incorporated their ideas and all worked as a team. All of us used our nursing judgments, to incorporate blood pressure table or hand washing table on the project outreach day and this helped us to have a better picture of the day. Bad: I felt bad that our plan of having two booths on the final outreach day got cancelled. Analysis: It is very important to make plans and models, so that our plan does not have any loopholes. The project logic model covers priority needs of the community and how we are going to accomplish this by using our nursing judgments and resources available .In the group meeting, we discussed about the project logic model with the three main questions keeping in mind who, what and how. Group made an appropriate plan of action based on assessment of priority needs, nursing judgment, availability of resources. We all discussed as a group and decided many things which would help us on our outreach day. We planned to use blood pressure table on the day of the outreach, as many people, especially seniors like to have blood pressure checked. We also discussed about the long term and short term goals of our project. At the end of the meeting, we came to know that we are going to have only one booth, so we made another plan of how to use one booth effectively (availability of resources). Conclusion: I think I gained a lot from this meeting, about how to properly attain the goal in steps. I realized how these meetings can help in achieving the goals and how they can incorporate the thoughts of every individual in the group. Action plan S: I will be able to do the outreach project for RWC. M: I will start preparing for it by making one poster in every two weeks. A: The project is achievable with all the circumstances given i.e. even with one booth available. R: Although the project cannot fulfill its goals in a very short period but the long term goals specified in the project would help to complete the project in a timely manner. Thus the project is reliable and realistic at the same time. T: I will able to the outreach project before 4th December. Third experience: Provide and receive constructive feedback to peers and partners Description: Few weeks before we all as a group decided to make a bookmarks with RWC information on it and to distribute in different areas of community (such as library, Humber college .etc). Simran prepared the design for the bookmarks and sent it to everyone. I liked the design of the bookmark as on one side it had listed services of RWC and on the other side it had the address of RWC with phone number. Simran did a good job and I could not stop from appreciating her creativity. All group members appreciated Simran’s efforts of creating the bookmarks. It is my nature that I speak less and for that my group members often tell me to participate in the group meetings and speak out my thoughts. They always encourage me to open up and share my viewpoints with them. Feelings: I think that idea of distributing bookmarks is great and Simran really did a good and creative job by designing the bookmarks. It was our collective thought that bookmark is something people like to keep. I feel uncomfortable while sharing my thoughts in the group meetings however, I feel encouraged when my group members give me confidence and support to speak out my thoughts. Their encouragement and support helped me a lot. Evaluation: Good: Bookmarks looked really good, and it was a good experience to encourage Simran and providing her with the constructive feedback. It was a good experience that my group members always encouraged me to speak and to express my views. Bad: It feels bad when I have a lot to say about some topic but due to hesitation and lack of confidence I keep my thoughts and views to myself. Analysis: It is very important to provide the members with the constructive feedback as it encourages the members or help them to improve next time. According to one of the articles using feedback as leadership practice providing individual-specific feedback is one of the most inexpensive and powerful tools in the arsenal of a group work. Without information about their performance, members can experience increasing anxiety. The absence of giving feedback can be perceived by a direct report as disrespectful (Groover, 2006). So it is very important to provide feedback to each other while working in a group as it helps us either in form of encouragement or as a motivation for improvement next time. For example, the comments of my peer members made me realize that I do not participate in group conversations and hence stay out of group decisions. Moreover, their continuous encouragement moved me a step further from a silent person towards the one who may take part in conversations. I started to express my views and speak because of their encouragement. Conclusion: In order to overcome the shortcomings, it is necessary to concentrate on the feedbacks of people who are close to you. Those who know us, can judge us better than ourselves. After I took notice of the complaints of my group members I realized that I really need to change this silent nature and must converse with them to help them and to be helped by them. Knowing the importance of feedbacks, I will continue to provide constructive feedbacks to my group members and shall try to improve myself. Action Plan: S: I will be able express my views without hesitation in the group meetings. M: I will start expressing some of my views by taking part in the conversations of each meeting. A: I will use these meetings to develop my confidence and achieve my goals. R: I will overcome my hesitation by speaking out my views in the group meetings.
