The biggest challenge ever faced by the human kind irrespective of the extent of technological advancement made has been in the form of gender discrimination. Even though it was severely condemned by the governments at global forums, it is unfortunate to find a poor improvement over the past condition.  Europe is no exception under this context. Glass ceiling concept has come to explain the nature of suppression faced by women in jobs especially in top positions The term was originally coined by Carol Hymowitz and Timothy Schellhardt in 1986 in Wall Street Journal.

However, some authors like Gay Bryant used this prior to that. The concept "Glass Ceiling" originally was intended to describe the invisible and artificial barriers that impeded women from advancing to higher positions in organizations. These barriers limit the development and mobility opportunities of men and women of diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds. The term glass ceiling applies mainly to situations where the advancement of a person within the hierarchy of an organization is limited.

Women hold a mere 1 to 3 percent of top executive jobs in the largest corporations around the world. It is also ironical to note that only 8 countries had women as heads of the state and only 13 % of the world parliamentarians constituted women as of 2001 (Linda Wirth, 2001). women, An organization is a corporate body in which a defined structure of functionaries will be present and employees will have to get equal opportunity to move up in the ladder based on their professional achievements.

However, it has been a common practice in Europe that the opportunities of women are blocked by these organizations in the name of the glass ceiling. This limitation is commonly based upon some form of discrimination like sex or gender. Discrimination in this context means the unfair and unjustified treatment given to some people showing some specific parameter s the reason. However, in the case of the glass ceiling, nothing will be shown on paper but the injustice will be done by the organizations for women.

It is really unfortunate to see this trend even in this technologically advanced era.
