The Case for Israel. Film Review. The movie released by Doc Emet Production is the filming of Alan`s Dershowitz, Harvard law professor, most famous book with the same title. The documentary is dedicated to the issues what Israel is up against and it support. Professor Alan Dershowitz begins his speech by explaining his reasons what for he is supporting Israel: he thinks it is possible to find a solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, because he is “a civil libertarian, a feminist, an environmentalist, a gay rights supporter and a lover of peace” who was fighting for human rights during all his life (“The Case for Israel”). Despite Israel’s desire for peace, its detractors proceed the efforts of indicting it. Dershowitz made the film attractive, forming the mix of interviews of historians and politicians. We are able to hear, for example, the opinions of Michael Oren and Aharon Barak. Sometimes Dershowitz appears in front of his listeners, commenting on some issues or giving us the hint about the next episode. Sometimes the viewer sees him conducting and talking to some of his interviewers. The film is divided into several parts and now I want to tell a bit more words about each of them and the information they bring to the viewer. “J`accuse” For those who do not see contradiction being concerned about human rights, the book “Palestine: Peace, Not Apartheid” by Jimmy Carter was written. He supports this idea and his book contains many attacks on Israel. This work had pushed Dershowitz to make his own project The Case for Israel. This part begins with the Carter’s arrival at Brandeis University in order to publicize the book. His idea was that Palestine has more rights, including the rights for land, than Israel. He said they do not want negotiation, Palestinians want to be separate. Dershowitz said he can’t “fully comprehend” this position and he had a lot to talk about and challenged him to hold a debate, but Jimmy Carter refused (“The Case for Israel”). Alex Safian, an associate director, tells that Dershowitz found discrepancies in that Carter spoke at meetings and interviews, and that was published in his book in fact (“The Case for Israel”). This film was made as a response to Carter. It is possible to listen to an opinion of professor of law Amnon Rubinstein, who proves that in Israel “the law is equal to all citizens, all residents” without taking into account race, skin color, gender and religion (“The Case for Israel”). Dershowitz has courage to claim that Carter “has blood on his hands of four thousand Palestinians and over a thousand of Israelis and is a co-conspirator of the crime against Palestinians” (“The Case for Israel”). “Historical facts” It is noticed that those people, who came to the discussing territory from Poland, Russia and Lituania, were not conquerors or colonialists, as they are often called by students, but immigrants. Historians say that Jews probably occupied Palestine and the Israel land “at the end of the second millennium BC” to nowadays (“The Case for Israel”). This means they are legally living on their home land, Israel. This area was the base for foundation on Jewish nation and religion. Researches show that we can judge about the ancient history even by the Bible elements. There was found an evidence issue with the direct “Hello” from the past in the in the person of Jeguhan ben Shovii. It is not a secret that Jerusalem is mentioned in the Bible for more than 600 times and the film considers Jerusalem is not in favor of those who want to destroy even the memory of Islamic history, who had already brutally removed the pages of it. Historians see how the representatives of Muslim are “destroying their heritage” to cut out the fact of Islam existence on a par with other religions and traditions. The problem of land lording is passing throw the centuries, as the movie tells. In fact the owners, who were using the work power of farmers, did not want to share the land with them. Dershowitz says that the in World I War “the Jews were on the right site”, supporting American and British soldiers against the Germany (“The Case for Israel”). There existed an opinion that if the Jews would be restored to the ancient home the second coming of Jesus will happen. The British policy, according to movie, was directed to support the establishment of the state of Jews. It was realized not to be an easy way and choosing of the leader did not help too. The Palestine’s position during the World I War was controversial, and as a result, today we have a lot of discussions on this topic. The world community did not forget the fact that the nation was practically divided into two camps. The Jewish state establishment was supported by many countries like England and France, especially when the community saw the photos of nazi camps. So, the state creation was considered as the only way to the nation’s survival. In 1948, the neighbouring countries declared war for the newly created Jewish state. So, the conflict between Palestine and Israel got a new coil. In fact it is considered to be “a military move, not a political one” (“The Case for Israel”). The conflict grew and more and more Arabic countries were involved into it. The historical and geographical excursus, made by Morris and Oren, can be definitely useful for those people whose background knowledge about the discussing topic is not wide enough. “Democracy and difficult choices” Dershowitz says that “the Israel state means a state in which Jew’s values can be expressed”. He says that it is the wrong way to think that every Arabic state is a Muslim state (“The Case for Israel”). It seems Israel to be an example of democracy. An Israel understands what it means to be freely, to speak freely. Aharon Barak, the ex-president of the Supreme Court, does not reduce they can make mistakes, but they also have an ability to correct them. Dershowitz opinion it is enough to make a lot of questions justiciable between Israeli and Palestinians, but we are shown the cadres of children in the soldier clothes, explosions and protecting wall (“The Case for Israel”). The situation is that even kids, going to school, may hear the terrible sound of siren. Sometimes the problem of the defences is to determine if they should to hit the terrorists, as they like to occupy public places, like schools, for example, comments the Air force Commander of Israel Eliezer Shkedi. The film gives comments an explanation for decision of building the security wall. We are able to understand that Israel’s wall is quite different from the Berlin Wall by the words of Natan Sharansky (“The Case for Israel”). The film gives the viewer an opportunity to see the cadres of this fence. “Justice” Unfortunately, defenders are killing civilians with the terrorists, but Dershowitz thinks that only Israelis have a right to judge these events. He hints that the US sometimes judges very biased, describing Israel as almost the centre of world violence. Aharon Barak says that “Israel who was under terror… is doing what it can in order to have a proper balance between security and rights” (“The Case for Israel”). The interviews show us that if it is not politically correct to talk about anti-Semitism, why it should be correct to talk about “anti-Israel”? It is a pity, that people, who are calling themselves anti-racists, are criticizing only one country. The movie is asking us to think if it is not racism? The main point is that while the whole world will continue anti-Semitism ideology the conflict could not disappear. “Fortitude” Dershowitz still believes that the day of peace between Palestinian and Israel leaders “will finally be” (“The Case for Israel”). This optimistic note is the mark of the movie final. To sum up I can say, that this film - The Case for Israel - is an excellent educational movie. It suits for the wide range of audience. It would be useful for both pro-Israeli and pro-Palestinian students as it is quite correct from a political point of view and it can’t be better without the passion and articulation of Alan Dershowitz.
