Analysis of Motivation in Emirates Name Course Name Course Instructor Date When workers in an organization are motivated thy work together towards fulfilling the organizations mission and vision. Motivation is done mainly through giving incentives which could be administered in different ways. They include monetary value, more involvement of the employees and empowerment through training. There are two types of motivation, extrinsic and intrinsic Rodgers et al.'s (2009). Extrinsic motivation is the influence that comes from outside an individual and task being performed. Intrinsic motivation is the self-drive that comes from within an individual and the task being carried out Ormond et al (2008). There is a great challenge associated with employees who are not motivated in the organization because it leads problems that may lower the company’s profits and operations. This problem may include declining of morale where the employees work for the sake of completing their hours at work and not for the passion of their job. This may affect the organization's rate of achieving its mission and vision. Employees may feel demotivated which may lead to relaxation in making efforts to work towards achieving the organizations business targets. Reduced productivity is when the workers reduce the energy, time and concentration they put in executing their tasks. This results from lack of giving employees incentives. Motivating employees is important but at the same time tricky to most organization because it requires proper strategizing and planning. Small businesses find it difficult to apply this approach because it tends to be quite expensive and may not provide the desired results. Large firms benefit a lot from this strategy because they gain benefits due to the economies of scale in labor which leads to great returns. This is why most organizations make it a priority to motivate their employees by giving them incentives to keep them in check and for long term purposes. The essay will discuss the use of motivation by Emirates airline. Emirates airline is a parent company known as Emirates group and was founded in 1985. The subsidiaries of the company include Arabian adventures, Congress Solution International, Emirates holiday and Emirates Tours. It has a capacity of two hundred and fifty-one fleets and one hundred and thirty-six destinations. The company is well established and with proper financial standing. The airline is recognized due to their well-calculated strategies that have helped them attain good returns and achieve their targeted goals. The company is well divided into related industries which include airport services, engineering, hospitality services, catering and operator tour operation. All these industries have worked together for the benefit of the organization. One of the strategies that help the organization is the motivation of its employees. The company motivates their employees through comprehensive health plans which provide the employees with medical insurance and regular medical checkups. Through this knowledge, the employees work efficiently and effectively, leading to high productivity. Expectant employees are paid during maternity leave and given maximum leave days to rest and nurture their babies and family. The family is vital to every individual and when one's place of work understands and respect that it makes them more comfortable and confident. Sick leave is also another strategy where if an employee is ill the company ensures that they are given time to go and get medical attention and rest. This is critical because through good health the workers are productive and leading high output. Profit sharing strategy is also used by Emirates Airlines where the employees are allocated share on the profits made at the year end. Profit sharing motivates the employees to continue working hard as they grow and the company also benefits. Merit pay is also used to motivate the employees where the employee of the month or the year is identified and reworded for hard work done. Merit pay brings positive competition among the employees and gives opportunity to those with great ideas, therefore, tapping into their talents. Measuring the merits and demerits of a motivation strategy before applying it is very crucial to a company. The first step is to discuss the advantages of the motivation strategy. Merits of motivation strategy According to Furnham et al (1994), the first advantage of motivation is that the employees will work with better interest. This is because employees will be working in a comfortable environment with no issues and therefore they will work to their best potential. Another advantage is that the employees become an asset to the organization. Employees become an asset to the organization when the organization invests in them and they become more beneficial to achieving of the organizations goals. Proper communication is another motivation strategy where instructions are properly communicated from the top hierarchy to the subordinates. This leads to proper execution of commands and avoid miscommunication which may lead to misunderstanding between supervisors and employees. The Proper of instructions leads efficient flow of information and instructions therefore leading to the achievement of goals and visions of the company. There are situations where an organization is experiencing conflicts between managers and their subordinates or employers and employees. Communication acts as an exquisite motivation strategy to solve the differences that may affect the performances of the employees. Demerits of motivation strategy The first demerit to discuss is the ineffectiveness after an extended period. According to Kerr, motivation is best used at the beginning to solve a certain issue or situation but for a limited period of time. Once an employee gets used to it they tend to relax and forget about working hard to get the incentives. It occurs mainly in a situation where there profits are increased. Once the salaries are increased there are those that get comfortable and contented and they feel there is no need to work harder. The second disadvantage is when the reward is drawn away the motivation is lost. There are those companies that tend to draw away their incentives after some time. This withdrawal mood can be dangerous because there are those employees who only work because of those incentives being provided and once they are gone, they go back to the same old behavior. The problem with this is that the company may face an enormous unexpected drop in returns and therefore making it their obligation to keep the incentives. There are those that draw them away because of financial constraints, but the employees may not understand after all they only care about the incentives Kerr et al.'s (1976). The third demerit is that the motivation strategy may require a lengthy preparation period. As discussed earlier motivation can be expensive to a company and therefore the human resource department will have to organize a system on how this incentive will be administered. This requires time and training, therefore, taking time which may not be available because of the situation the company. The fourth demerit in case of lacks or draws away the motivating factor or incentive the employees may threat to strike or demonstrate. There have been cases of employees of a particular company striking because their benefits have been cut off. This may occur mainly to those who have made it a culture that there must be incentives and therefore the day they face financial constraints and cut off the incentives it brings friction. Recommendations Motivation is a very active strategy depending on the type and situation of the company. Due to its financial demand, it's best applied to companies that are well established in their target field and market. Before the application of the strategy, it is best that the organization conducts research. Proper research will assist in finding out their current situation and where they stand then try and come up with alternatives before settling for motivation. The motivation strategy is very hard to stop without causing friction which may cause adverse effects on the company. Before initiating motivation it is best to understand the situation on the ground and the duration which the particular motivation method will be used. Conclusion Through motivation, Emirates airline has managed to keep its employees happy and content, therefore, reflecting it in their work output. The company acts as an example to many upcoming companies and helps many understand the motivation strategy. According to Keijzers, a motivated employee makes a happy employer. It is because the worker will work passionately giving their best to the company to achieve the goals. Achieved goals mean good returns, therefore, good reputation and making the investors happy.
