al Affiliation In our life time we encounter surprises although, some of the surprises are as a result of things and other people but some are actually brought about by us. It is very difficult for one to surprise himself or herself because that would mean to explore, consistence and challenge. According to Louis Thomas, Mark Doty and John Nash it is my inspiration to analyze how individuals keep working, get surprised by their work and look beyond surprises in the long run. According to Louis Thomas belief, thinking out the box assist in the formulation of emerging ideas that may be a surprise to people. In one of his essays” Crickets, bats, &chaos” Thomas initiates the inquiry into the behavior of his cat Jeoffrey. He wonders how to classify the mind of his cat which is an uncommon question in the first place. In addition, he goes ahead to analyze to analyze the cat’s mind and compares it with the human mind. This results into “a mind totally unlike mine”. Thomas continues to explain that non humans mainly think in biological spheres but “certainly nothing like thought” (491). More specifically they do not have real thoughts, foresee the future, and regret the past and they lack awareness something different from the state of human beings. It is clear that we cannot put mitigations to our mind generations if there is no iota of awareness or even information existing in our minds. Thomas is not satisfied with the idea of acquiring second hand knowledge pertaining to non human’s unawareness and ignorance, instead he believes in the firsthand thinking and he experiments it perfectly to his readers. Together with this Thomas extends his interest to insects such as crickets. He introduces this insect in a biological and in a scientific manner. The term “thermometer crickets” represents how crickets excretions chirping signals conforms to the temperature. Together with this, Thomas is struck by “temperature coupling” which is the suitable terminology for emphasis. “Warm females corresponded best to songs of warm males and the same was repeated by the cold females on their male counterparts”(491). Those were the conclusion as per the previous experiment. Thomas shift from learning second hand to thinking first hand way. He started thinking about cricket at a different angle of the mind make up. Crickets reaction to predators. Primarily crickets exhibits two reactions one entails swerving away whenever predator approaches and another one is to create skirmishes whenever the enemy is close. However, instead of swerving away, the insect indulge into violence, random flight patterns which are quite unpredictable that can make him be regarded as possessing some sort of awareness. Their chaotic movements mislead the bats which are their potential predators. Thomas goes ahead to assert that this awareness is an evidence of cricket thinking. He compares humans and non humans, Thomas thinks that he has fully identified the diversity between humans’ chaos and crickets chaos, he admits that he understands it “quite superficially”(492). In the realization there is “order in chaos”. Thomas thinks that a cricket must have ‘a small enough nervous system to seem predictable and orderly most of time. Within a few minutes Thomas conflicts his opinions by not holding to his first thought which was for the idea that the first hand acquisition of knowledge is of more prominence than the second hand. This way of thinking starts from curiosity, fascination and modest innocence. In the essay “souls on ice” Doty “was struck by the elegance of the Mackerel”(92) similar to Thomas interest in his cat, they could both viewed their pieces of work at a longer period of time. Doty is very competent in designing poetic pieces however, he admits that metaphor is of a challenge to him and this is what he depends on most. He shares his most fundamental thoughts on how he responds to the ideas and also how this makes him produce words and sentences. Dotty puts emphasis on his observations, like in one of his lines “they were rowed and stacked, brilliant against the white of crushed ice; I loved how the black and glistening the band of dark scales were, and the primed sheen of the patches between and their shining flat eyes”(92). On the same note, Thomas a pathologist studies his cat by simply observing every detailed move it makes. These modesty augers well with both authors in their problem investigation approaches. Thomas agrees that he was superficial, Doty too admits that he only sees the proverbial part of the all idea, he goes ahead to state that there were wrong starts and turnings and he threatens to surrender if at all the ideas are losing direction. Contrary to Thomas view on second hand thinking Mark Doty is not under any obligation to learn only the composition of the beautiful world but instead he has his own extended view on the possession of the gravity or the charge to which motivates him to study about the earth. After deeper scrutiny into the earth study Doty realize a surprise, it becomes clear that his fascination of the Mackerel is not just a common experience but a reflection of his memory of a dead partner. Just thinking about Mackerel in the first place is “condolence” poem is endowed with playful tones. What fascinates him most is the irony in the intention of the poem which intends to make him happy even though he is thinking about is partner’s death. In the movie a beautiful mind. A renowned mathematician John Nash is diagnosed schizophrenia. A friend visited and asked “when you are sick you claim that aliens are talking to you, but it shocking to hear that a mathematician base his arguments on the ridiculous superstitions like the aliens” but Nash answered by saying that “the creation of math went in my mind the same way the creation of aliens did so I believe in aliens equally as I believe in math”. In his book he put down that” a rational thought imposes a limit to person’s relations to cosmos.” He objects to follow the same path that people always follow. In addition, Nash does not take medicine to cure schizophrenia as that makes him doze off the whole day. He does not stay in hospital as expected instead he sneaks out to the library and classroom to conduct some research. It is a surprise both to him and the world in general by demonstrating that he could blend the horrific decease and the success just by employing the first hand thinking and maintaining it. Both Thomas and Dotty had the same experience in expressing themselves. They always begun with fascination then develop it to something else most likely an unexpected occurrence then observe it carefully. They explored both second hand and first hand thinking then test all the factors imagined. It is of much prominence to note that the surprises of Thomas and Doty followed different angles in the experience and the way it impacted on them. In Thomas case the surprises totally changes the view of the objective world. At first he used to view animals and nature as strangers but when the surprise comes he now realizes that all human beings are part of nature. Doty on his case the surprise give him a way in which to view his partner’s death. In his poem it is interpreted that his partner is not a big deal and that the fish in the sea of much importance than the partner. What Doty is certain about is his way of thinking which is rigid and has no space for flexibility so as to have more surprises which will aid him to get more and critical way of perceiving things. In contrary Nash teachings which is for the tolerance for people on way of working. I also had my own surprise in life in that I started having a different take on the way people did things in life. It could dawn on me that there was emergence of surprises emanating from the different angles of the perception. I can remember in September 2011 I had a glass of Orange juice I maintained my posture never to be interrupted by the chats from my classmates who did not take note of what was happening. It happened that I was filling my glass of orange juice next to the milk machine looking up I saw a girl whom I realized was familiar, had met her a week before though I did not greet her the guilt engulfed my take. It was hard to do it at this point and time, I found myself starring at her even though she kept her eyes on the milk. I was in a dilemma I could not withstand it. I left the place and took back my seat with a glass half full of juice, I was starring at the juice but I could not drink it. I was filled with mixed emotions mostly shame and regret, I could remember the sacrifices my parents and I made to ensure that I passed to the high school. At this point I was ready for anything, I thought just coming to US would be a no task just saying hi like it meant the literally easy way of saying “hi”. Contrary to my thought this involved both physical and mental preparations, you have to be endowed with some sense of personality together with courage at least to maintain a eye contact with the people. After feeling ashamed and regretful I could not have certainty something which was very rare in both my culture and language. After all these mental challenges I could down and felt more comfortable, stable and relaxed than ever before. I later became ready not only for the issue of saying hi but for everything which included even unpredicted scenarios. I found myself saying hi with much confidence and asking questions such as who is here. This made people too to grow confidence in me and I could realize that it is very easy now to interact with people much easier with the confidence I had I could now explore much and know people more Just to conclude, one can realize his or her potential as pertaining to something when he or she goes to the extreme. It entails going to a point that you can trigger surprise to yourself so that you can see and realize what is in you. By surprise one can learn new things and explore more about the world.
