The game is similar to baseball, and is played under the guidance of many rules. Each team bats in innings and aims to score runs. The opposing team on the other hand fields and tries to end the innings of the batting team. The team that has most runs at the end of the game is declared the winner. The game demands the skills of speed and energy. Equipment used in playing cricket Cricket is played using a hard cork and string ball, which is normally covered with leather. The ball weighs between 156 and 163 grams and has a diameter ranging from 224 millimeters to 229 millimeters (French & Anns, 1991). Normally, the ball is red and white in color but can also be white for visibility purposes. The ball is hit using a cricket bat, which is made using willow and is flat on one side and humped on the other side. The bat measures 108 millimeters by 965 millimeters (French & Anns, 1991). Another important tool in the game is the wicket, which is made of three stamps and two bails. The game is quite risky and all players must wear protective gear. For a player to be allowed to be in the field of play, they must wear pads, helmet and gloves, which protect them from injuries of being struck by the ball. All the batmen men must wear spiked leather shoes. According to the games tradition, the players wear long or short-sleeved long pants. Their color depends on the color of the ball being used. The field has an elliptical shape and on average, it measures 90 to100 meters across (French & Anns, 1991). How the game is played and the rules of the game The team that bats first is chosen by tossing a coin. Two players take the bat while the rest wait for their turn off the field. The other team (fielding team) disperses in the field to stop runs from being scored. The opposing team runs from one point to another before the play can be ended or before the defenders in the fielding run them out. The person bowling the ball is called the bowler while the batsman facing the bowler is referred to as the striker (ECB (Organization), 2009). One member of the opposing team stands behind the wickets and he is called the wicket keeper. A tally is counted each time the ball is bowled even if it does not hit the striker. An over is declared after the bowler bowls the ball for six times in one direction. After the over is declared, a new bowler is selected (ECB (Organization), 2009). The striker can be changed between overs or can be changed depending on the number of runs completed. When the batsman is declared out, there are required to leave the field. The innings are only over when the fielding team manages to score 10outs in one inning. Wickets are crucial in cricket and they are used to out a batsman. The batsman should ensure that they break the wicket by knocking one of the wickets. If the ball hits the striker, he is considered bowled. The striker is caught out if a person in the fielding team manages to catch the ball before it hits the ground. Six points are earned if the fielder catches the ball and steps over the boundary line. The batsman is not supposed to touch the ball with his hands unless the fielding team gives permission. A striker is normally called out is he hits the ball twice for any other reasons besides scooting it away from the wicket (Shepherd, 1995). It is a foul to hit the ball twice to confound fielders or to improve a score. When a batsman is called out, another batsman should be replaced within two minutes failure to which they are considered timed out. Every bowl should be performed over the shoulder and with a straight arm. Every bowler has his or her own movement style. It is mandatory that the bowl reach the striker at the waist or below (Christie, 2003). Any bowl on the striker’s sides or above his waist is called a wide or no ball. After the striker hits the ball, he and the non-strikers run to opposite ends of the pitch. If they exchange places before the ball is considered out, they earn one point. The batsmen are allowed to run in other directs apart from those which they hit the ball in (Shepherd, 1995). However, they should ensure that they stay behind the popping lines so that they are safe from outs. The batsmen are allowed to try a second run before they are considered out. On normal occasions people run between one and four runs on a single bowl. Is the ball bounces once on its way out, four runs are automatically awarded and if it does not bounce, six runs are awarded. Objectives of playing cricket The main objective of any game is to win and achieve more points than the opponents. In cricket, the major objective is for a tea to score more runs than their opponents (Williams, 2014) are. The team is also required to focus on dismissing the opponents so that they can win the match. Each member of the team plays different roles and has different objectives as far as winning the game is concerned. The strikers have an objective of achieving very many runs between the wickets after hitting the ball. The bowler on the other hand should ensure that the ball bounces once and does not rise above the waist of the striker. The batsman should hit the ball as far as possible so that the fielding tea does not get the ball before they achieve a single run or more (Gifford, 2008). The batman should ensure that they hit the ball beyond the boundaries so that they can comfortably achieve the four runs without necessarily running. The fielding team should ensure that they catch the ball before it hits the ground so that the bowling teams are considered out. Psycho-Socio-Physiological effects of playing cricket Cricket is the game played most by children. It is very entertaining and can be played by children of all ages. The game demands speed, flexibility, agility and reflexes which are more in children than in adults (Bradman, 2011). Psychologically, its increases the concentration of kids and enables them to have better decision-making skills. The game demands a lot of observation and understanding and playing it often benefits the child psychology. They benefit socially since they learn to have self-control, integrity and respect for others (Bradman, 2011). Children benefit physically for the aerobic workout of sprinting between wickets. The Psycho-Socio-Physiological benefits are more likely to be experienced in children than in adults since the children’s mind is more ready to learn than that of adults. Adults are less likely to become more flexible than they were since their bones have already developed. Psychology develops at a tender age and elderly people may not have their psychology changed through playing the game. Comparison to other games Like any other game, cricket is a form of physical exercise that the players engage in. it unifies people and builds the spirit of teamwork. It differs from other games since not all players are in the field of play at one particular time. In all other games, all the players apart from the substitutes are in the field when the game is in progress. Cricket does not have very many fans and is not poplar like sports such as football and basketball. However, research has proved that it is among the most interesting games and it attracts the attention of children who do not love playing.
