Developing an Intervention Psychotherapy Programme for the Needs of Iranian Immigrants in UK - Dissertation Example

I will introduce my research focus and topic; explain my personal context to work as well as the professional and social-political context of my project.I believe a person’s professional aptitude and ability is as much a product of formal training and learning as it is about their life experiences and personal beliefs and attitudes. I think, therefore, it is important to elaborate on my personal context as it could provide insights about my motivations for my Final Project and will also help to locate me - the researcher- vis a vis my research topic.

The following few pages are therefore committed to tracing my personal history, which is intricately interwoven with my current research pursuits. Both my personal journey and background have given me motivation and context for my Final Project Doctoral research where I aim to modify and improve my basic PEP (Psycho-Education Programme) with insight from current literature and primary research with other psychotherapists. Currently, I have a private practice where I use my Farsi Psycho-Educational Therapy Programme (FPP).

My FPEP is the result of the decades of experience with clients from the Iranian and other Middle Eastern backgrounds. My work with this diverse clientele of the Middle East has shown me that though the people from the region share some commonalities, there are also very specific socio-cultural (based on country of origin- Afghanistan, Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, Iran, etc.) Differences lead to different expectations from the mental health programs, different perceptions, and different inhibitions in clients.

Coming from an Iranian background, my father was my main inspiration. He was always respected, supported, and encouraged my interests. As a teenager, I was intrigued by social problems like drug abuse, alcohol addiction, cultural tensions, religious persecutions, and political conflicts – all of which was much too rampant in the country at the time. I wanted to research these issues, and I spent hours talking to people in a bid to understand their attitudes, beliefs, and thought processes.
